“Cheap hotel, but not worth the money”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

My husband and I stayed at Chad Hill for 3 nights recently. Whilst the decor of the B&B is dated, we didn't feel as though this was a huge problem for us. Our room was adequate and everywhere was clean, but the pillows were rather thin and not very comfortable. The ensuite was very dated, and small, and the door was like that from a wild-west saloon. It didn't lock properly, and had a massive gap at the bottom, both of which lead to a lack of privacy. The water pressure in the shower was minimal. On our second morning I experienced a scalding shower, and then very quickly a freezing shower. I was unable to wash my hair. The hairdryer provided lacked power and heat.

The cooked breakfast was very basic, with what looked (and tasted) like the cheapest ingredients possible. It consisted of one sausage, a rasher of bacon, slice of fried bread, a tinned plum tomato, and a very over cooked fried egg. There were cereals though, and plenty of toast. We didn't eat here in the evenings, but the smells from their evening cooking were not very appealing.

Cannot fault the friendliness of the lady owner, but we did feel a little as though we were intruding when we stopped for a drink in the bar one night. We had to ring the bell several times to get service.

Our last complaint is that we feel as though what is initially offered on a hospitality tray should be replenished if used. It was good to have a bottle of water, but this wasn't replaced, nor were any of the biscuits after our first mornings cup of tea. There were only 2 small cartons of milk provided each day.

Whilst the location is convenient for Sandown, we would not choose to stay here again.

Having done the wrong thing and booked a three-day stay at Chad Hill without first reading the reviews, my partner and I arrived mid-week in early October a bit anxious as to what sort of break it would be.
Having made a detour to the bank (cards were not accepted) we found that some of the critical reviews were quite justified. The place is indeed 'overfurnished' and cluttered with odd ornaments and pictures and we were shown into the lounge by the friendly proprietor which looked rather uninviting due to the heavy outdated furnishings. To be fair, our room on the first floor at the front of the hotel was clean but uninspiring and again over-furnished for such a small space. The 'en-suite' was clean but very cramped and anyone of larger than average build would certainly have access problems. The water was hot and plentifull. We found the bed comfortable, although only one pillow was provided and the creaky floorboards responded to every move. There were just two sachets of milk in the service tray and hot chocolate, if required, cost 50p from reception. Dinner was served efficiently and without delay by our friendly hostess (we had chosen from the three-choice menu earlier) and proved to be adequate more than exceptional, as were all the meals. The dishes were obviously non-professionally cooked without much finesse and rather bland and obviously came from the freezer with no fresh veg evident, even the breakfast tomatoes were tinned and the sausages probably of the 'mechanically recovered' variety The bar within the dining area was a good focal point and adequately stocked for a small hotel and proved popular with older guests. All in all we found it was not the bad experience of some reviewers and with a bit of culling of excess furniture and tacky ornaments and a little imagination in the kitchen Chad Hill could be greatly improved, but would still probably not suit younger guests.

Room Tip: Steer clear of the rooms divided only by stud partitions!

My girlfriend and I have just enjoyed a lovely stay in the Chad Hil. We were unsure what to think as we arrived, the furniture was a little quirky and old fashioned. The staff were fantastic and took an interest in us both every morning. The Cooked breakfast was really good and set us up for the day ahead every day. The rooms were cleaned every day and were fantastically clean! I think the other review is a little unfair, I'd prefer to stay in a friendly quirky hotel over a conventional unfriendly hotel any day. The value is superb, I'd thoroughly reccomend this hotel. 10/10 we'll definitely be returning! Many thanks

Booked this establishment on strength of description on Late Rooms website. Upon arrival we could only park the car in front of main entrance door due to parking area full. Did not fancy parking on road due to location being on a corner, and coaches passing for access to other hotels. Upon entering the hotel, we were greeted by the proprietor, who welcomed us accordingly. We were at once hit by the smell, which we thought was possibly soup? and led into the "lounge" in order to register. It was then made clear to me that terms were cash only, which came as a surprise after having reserved the room by card. Looking around it was apparent that we had entered a time warp! I understand that the theme is Victorian, but this was something else, more like tired, worn out and unwanted. We were escorted to our room, and the smell came with us. We were led into the room following the proprietor, and were then unable to move, as three of us in the room filled it to capacity. In the room is a four poster arrangement to the bed, which made the room feel even smaller, and old white melamine furniture which is well past its sell by date. The en-suite is beyond belief, being no larger than an average cupboard, with no room for a sink which is located in the main room. The door to the en-suite has a gap below of approx 1 ft, and the same above it, which did come in handy for somewhere to hang the towel whilst showering. All in all not a good experience, although I have to say,we did sleep well, until the person in the next room woke me with a cough and a yawn through the very thin wall. This establishment has the appearrance of a residential home for the elderly. Had we not arrived late in the day, we would not have stayed. We declined breakfast.

Room Tip: stay somewhere else

i stayed at chad hill hotel in may 2011. i immediatley loved the building and its atmosphere which was then enhanced by the loveliest of welcomes from Judy and Mohsen, the owners. Our room was spacious and comfortable as was the small bathroom. My mum and i ate an evening meal a couple of times which we thoroughly enjoyed as well as having a good breakfast each morning. The food was lovely, background music was fun and i particularly liked the bar area. Judy and Mohsen were very accomodating and friendly throughout our stay, i feel i have made new friends. Nothing was too much trouble, it was a relaxing enjoyable short holiday and i would reccomend Chad Hill to anyone wanting a quiet getaway break in the loveliest of victorian buildings. I must add it was situated within easy reach of Sandowns ammenities and local bus stops, especially handy for those of us who dont drive.

We were recommended Chad Hill Hotel by a friend who has stayed here a couple of times. We were a bit worried about previous reviews but in the end we were so glad we went. We had a warm welcome, the owner was very helpful with tourist information and nothing was too much trouble. The room was a bit on the small side but was clean and comfortable, the hotel itself, is an old Victorian house with loads of character and there's free parking! For the money we paid we thought it was excellent value and would go back any time.
