We have just returned from a week's stay at The Wight Montrene Hotel in Sandown. The hotel was only a 2 minute walk to the sea but not on the front so was a peaceful place to stay. The welcome we got was very friendly and we were shown our table in the restaurant that we would have for the entire stay and then we were shown to our room. The room was very clean and had plenty of room as it was a triple room. The bed was very comfortable and there was a fan in the room which came in handy. The food was very good and of high quality, breakfast was a delight as you could have a small breakfast of cereal or you could go for the full monty cooked breakfast which was very tasty. The evening meals were delightful and some nights I found it hard to choose what to have as I liked all the meals on the menu. The entertainment was very good we even had a gentleman playing the keyboard while we had our dinner. The indoor pool was very clean and we had a swim before breakfast. Would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in Sandown and we will hopefully be going back next July but for a bit longer.

We spent 7 nights B&B at this hotel. It is a very clean hotel and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was great and plentiful. The swimming pool is a good size, very clean and at a nice temperature. This hotel is only a 2 star hotel but it does not feel like it. We would rate it either 3 or 4 stars. Our room was very clean and a good size with a view overlooking the garden and swimming pool.

The hotel is set back from the main road so is very quiet. The hotel is well located in Sandown with only a few minutes’ walk to the sea front. When we visit the Isle of Wight again we will book with this hotel.

Thank you for a great week.

Room Tip: We had room 242

although advertised I was disappointed to be told that these facilities (i.e. massages facials etc) were not available. Apparently the one and only practioner was on sick leave and the hotel was still looking for a replacement. Hence the title of this review. The hotel lacked some basic niceties and safety aides i.e. shower and bath mats. Quite a few of the residents were elderly and this would have been an aid for them. Rooms were clean, but it was strange that they did not have a telephone in them, as most hotels and guest houses have.It would be a good idea to have a full photograph of the hotel as those expecting a large white edifice will be sorely disappointed(as opposed to an entrance up a sideway that is not very clearly marked.) The staff were very efficient and friendly, and the food was good and plentiful. With a bit of fine tuning and a clear picture of what is actually available this could give a better pointer to what you are actually getting. P.S. Lack of shelving in bathrooms did not leave much space for toiletries, razors etc.......

Room Tip: 2nd floor has less noise level due to downstairs suffering from footfall noise from top level

Management response:Responded 1 July 2012

We are glad that Vivienne A of Portsmouth and her three fellow guests found our staff to be both efficient and friendly and thank her for her comment that our food was both good and plentiful. We would however wish to address the following points that she made.

SPA FACILITIES – We do not profess to be a Spa or a Spa Hotel and do not charge the prices normally associated therewith. We have just a small unit for massage and facials with just one employee – quite adequate to correctly service the latent demand from our hotel clients and the prices charged for treatments are very low. Unfortunately the therapist fell ill and, as anyone with any knowledge of employment law would know, an employer cannot just fill the position with another person! It does however seem strange that, if Spa treatments were of importance to the client, she did not make advance reservations for same - the hotel reservation was made in May for a visit at the end of June so there was ample time to do so. And there was good reason to book any treatments in advance – by doing so a 25% reduction is given on our already very low prices! Whilst 90% of all treatments are so advance booked in this instance no attempt to do so was made – if it had been then she would have been advised of the problem at that time.

SHOWER AND BATH MATS – It is nice to see such thoughtfulness towards more elderly clients of the hotel. We would assure her that we have some 20 such mats which are readily available for anyone who requests them – a far better idea than leaving them in the bath or shower where, being continually damp, they tend to suffer from mould. The comment has however been taken to heart and notices have already been prepared and are being put in all bathrooms stating to request from either chamber staff or Reception.

TELEPHONES IN ROOMS – are getting less and less frequent in all but luxury 4 and 5 Star hotels. The reason is very simple – virtually everybody, from 8 to 80 years of age, now has a mobile phone – are they then going to use a hotel phone at 50p for a few minutes local telephone call? We are a humble 2 Star AA hotel – and room telephones have never been a requirement at that level. Further, as of 2 years ago, the AA (and ETC) stopped room phones being a requirement of even a 3 Star hotel.

A PHOTO OF THE HOTEL – the client says that It would be a good idea to have a full photograph of the hotel as those expecting a large white edifice will be sorely disappointed (as opposed to an entrance up a sideway that is not very clearly marked. There seems here to be some considerable degree of confusion in the client’s mind – we are the WIGHT Hotel (as in Isle of WIGHT) not the WHITE Hotel (as in the COLOUR)!!! The signage on the entrance to the hotel’s driveway from the road to the hotel has the hotel name on each pillar and additionally a large illuminated AA sign – we are prohibited from anything more garish by the Island’s planning rules which attempt to keep things in keeping with the feel of the Island. We do however our best to make it easy for guests to find the hotel without problem by sending out route instruction with every confirmation of reservation – possibly these were not read? The driveway with the hotel being set back from the road has however two big benefits – the hotel has (size for size) more free, on-site car parking provision than any other hotel in Sandown and far less noise from traffic, other establishments (pubs, clubs, take-aways etc.) or passers-by.

SHELVING IN BATHROOMS – Agreed. Most of our bathrooms have already had their shelving provision improved and the remainder are due to be done in the next off-season period.

FINE TUNING – When we bought the hotel 6 years ago it was already regarded as one of the best in the town. As opposed to any “Fine Tuning” may we inform Vivienne B that during our ownership well over £500,000 has been spent on improvements – and the word “improvements” is stressed - we have neither extended nor in any way increased capacity. The verdict of the AA Inspectorate (a hard-nosed bunch of professionals who have seen it all and are qualified to judge quality from one hotel to another) is that we are in the top 1% of 2 Star Hotels in the UK. With the greatest of respect it is therefore felt that the client’s expectations are rather higher than are likely to be satisfied by anything less than a hotel of at least a 3 but more likely a 4 Star rating..

We went to this hotel from the 01.06.2012 for 7 days, we had a great time, visited lots of places on the Isle of Wight, the Hotel was lovely, the staff are hard working, very friendly, they could not do enough for you, the food was fantastic also the service, the rooms are very clean and i would recommend this hotel f or quality, we also stayed there for Christmas 2011, First time i have ever been away for Christmas and we had a great time, only thing wrong with staying there for Christmas was far to much food, but we enjoyed this very much. John & Fran who run the hotel also gave everyone a present on Christmas day which i thought was a very nice touch. Thank you to the staff at the Montrene for two lovely holiday's.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 160 which had a proper shower, not one over the bath, we did have a shower over th...

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights and thoroughly enjoyed being there. We had the dinner, bed and breakfast package which was extremely good value. The food was plentiful and good quality. The full waitress service for breakfast and dinner was a real treat. The staff were very pleasant and always ready to help. Superb facilities topped off a really lovely stay.
