“Christmas with our Dog”
Reviewed 20 January 2014

Spent Christmas at The Wight Montrene with our dog in 2013. We were all made very welcome, with the dog getting lots of fussing from other guests and staff. He is a big dog (German Shepherd),
but well behaved, although only 2years old, but the cleaning staff are not put out at the thought of a bit of extra work in our room. We put OTT sheets on the floor, but hairs do seem to find their own way around, and the weather was rather "damp", but non of this was a problem to the Hotel.
Our room and bed were very comfortable, very good food, and good company for the whole of our 5 night stay.

Room Tip: when we visit we normally have our dog with us, so we always have a ground floor room, which are ver...

A series of disappointments - the first before we even got there, when I tried to book a massage in the spa - the therapist was unable to do any kind of massage, due to an operation. Disappointed, but was still looking forward to our Winter Warmer.
When we arrived, "Sibyl" greeted us with the news that the dinner would not be provided on the second night of our stay, although they would reimburse us for this! Ok, never mind, lots of lovely places to eat, although most of Sandown was closed for the winter, we found a lovely pub in Brading and had a super meal there.
Then we went to use the pool area - the changing room was a bit spartan, cold and not terribly clean, but the pool was ok. However, we hadn't read the (extensive) information about the pool area before taking our kit over there, so didn't realise we would need a £1 coin to use the jaccuzi, or that we needed to give the hotel staff advance warning of wanting to use the sauna, so no massage, no jaccuzi and no sauna. Never mind, we thought, a nice meal, a drink and relax in the bar area with the resident pianist.
The resident pianist had obvioulsy left home and although he had left his piano behind, my husband was forbidden to play it. There was no other music in the bar/dance hall area. These facilities are great, but there was no atmosphere at all.
We ordered a very nice bottle of wine from the bar, which my husband had to open as the lady at the bar couldn't, and went through to eat - looking forward to the (still) advertised Friday menu of deep fried camembert and duck - to find that the menu had been changed to egg mayonnaise and suet pudding! Hardly the same thing at all!

Up to this point, we had been giggling about all the little disappointments, but we did mention to the waitress that we were disappointed with the menu alteration and she was very surprised that we had expected what is shown on the website, as they were served on Saturday and Thursday - she wasn't even aware that dinner had been cancelled on Saturday.

Our soup came, quickly followed by the manager/owner (Basil?~) who accused us of not being happy. By the time he had finished, some 10 minutes later, explaining why nothing was as advertised, I was ready to tip my, by now cold, soup over his head! A man with that kind of attitude should not be in the hospitality industry. We had not complained, just said we were disappointed, which we were and we were practically shouted at for wanting what was advertised on the website, and what we had paid for. I bit my tongue - it was tastier than the dinner anyway! The reasons for not being able to play the piano included not wanting to upset the other guests - there weren't any!

The bed has to be a top contender for the "most uncomfortable hotel bed" competition, lumpy and hard. We both got up with a stiff back.

However, the breakfast was lovely, good quality fresh produce.

Room Tip: The bed in 203 is awful!

Excellent value for money, like going back to the early 1970's but in a good way! We were genuinely surprised at how good the hotel was, from the large fluffy towels in the en-suite to the large well cooked breakfast.

We have just returned from an enjoyable New Year Package at The Wight Montrene. The staff were very good and the food was delicious and plentiful. This three day package was good value for money. We enjoyed the nostalgia evening on the third night and the use of the pool and jacuzzi. We did miss a disco on New Year's Eve though as the entertainment tended to cater for older clients but that's just our own preference. Lots of extras like free cocktails, champagne to toast the New Year and sausage rolls and mince pies.

Just spent the New year at The Whight Montrene Hotel, Sandown and did not want to come home.

Everything was wonderful, the food, the decorations, the staff, the entertainment and the cocktails !!!!

It felt like we had joined a big family for the festive season, We have been away many times for the New Year, but this was the best, will be back again.

Well done to the management and staff, you have a wonderful hotel.

Room Tip: rooms are not modern, but all rooms are very clean and have everything you need.

We returned with friends to this excellent value hotel for the Christmas and New Year break. Although the weather this year was appalling, the friendliness of the staff, the food glorious food, the comfortable rooms, the entertainment, and the excellent facilities soon made us forget the wind and rain.
I must single out our waitress, Tammy, who looked after us with remarkable efficiency and good humour.
The Montrene makes a good base and we were able to visit the IOW Steam Railway, Newport, Ryde, Oasis, Busy Bees, Shanklin, Arreton and Gods Hill despite the stormy conditions.
We will be back in April with our classic car club.

If you are going to Sandown then this is the place to stay. It's excellent location is literally 2 minutes from the beach yet the hotel is tucked away from the main road so you are not disturbed by traffic or noise. We have just returned from a 3 night stay over new year at the Wight Montrene Hotel and cannot praise it enough. The hotel is clean comfortable and very homely. Nothing was too much trouble and there was always a member of staff on hand to offer whatever assistance was required whether it be taking group photographs or serving a drink. The food was delicious with lots of choice and was always served hot with a smile from the waitress. I shall now have to stop eating for a couple of weeks to get rid of the extra mince pies and sausage rolls served around 10.30pm despite having enjoyed a 5 or 6 course meal earlier in the evening! We ordered a packed lunch for our journey home and the sandwiches were freshly made and filled with thick juicy ham. A much better option than supermarket or motorway cafe food. Thank you to everyone at the hotel for such excellent service. I don't think you have seen the last of us!!
