Stayed as part of a Caledonian Coach Tour. Very friendly, efficient staff .e.g. bulb blew in bathroom replaced within 10 minutes of phone call, although 3 coach parties food was served quickly and the staff were more than happy to accommodate 2 fussy vegetarians. This is a "family" hotel and not a chain so expect a certain amount of "quirkiness" with regards to furniture and décor. Room was immaculately clean ( even down to silicon in bathroom recently replaced) with towels changed daily. .My wife tells me the Hotel " smelled clean" and the sheets smelled "fresh as opposed to "bleached". Also "quilted" toilet paper was apparently a big plus! The Hotel is situated a stone throw from the beach, but it does have its own immaculate pool area, and a "sea view" room is definitely recommended. It is also close to the Railway station if you wish to take a train to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway or to Ryde which will give you access to ferry or hovercraft to take you over to Portsmouth

Room Tip: Go for a sea view room.

My wife & I stayed at this hotel from July 6th to July13th 2013.
A real must is to book a seaview room , ours ( room 94 ) also had a balcony, beautiful seaviews & sun all day, they were made up daily & kept exceptionally clean,
Just under our balcony was the pool area which is kept spotless, there is also a lawned area with chars, tables, sun loungers & parasols,
All the staff were very friendly, efficient & polite,
The restaurant has beautiful views overlooking the sea, food was very good with a good choice of starters, main course, sweets & salads., good sized bar area with dance floor & entertainment every night,
Next door is the Kings Head pub owned & run by the hotel.( real ale enthusiasts. )
Plenty of bars, shops & food outlets in the area, Local bus service to most places on the island,
( If you have one, Don't forget your Bus Pass it is valid here )
A perfect location if you like to walk, not only the flat area of promenade & beach but also clifftop walks for the more mobile / energetic people.
We also went out on day trips organised by our tour company ( Shearings ) drivers are very knowledgable, friendly & well organised.
Holiday view :- In times gone by this would have been a very grand hotel full of character, needs a little TLC but don't let this put you off, it is worth staying here.
Recommended for the young & not so young for a good holiday,

Just returned from a 6 day break at the Ocean Hotel. Restaurant was lovely overlooking the seafront and was very clean - food could have been better - good choices on the menu but when some of the food arrived it was a little disappointing in quality. Good choice of wines and beers at reasonable prices.

Our room was overlooking the High Street and we expected it to be noisy but it wasnt until the early morning traffic started - but was still an acceptable level. The room/bathroom/bed linen were all exceptionally clean but the room was very tired with worn carpet and old fashioned dark furniture.
The bar area and entertainment area is very nice with a good sized dance floor. We had entertainment every night but the singers tended to sing the same songs ! but as the audience were generally 65+ they seemed to enjoy it.

The garden area is very pleasant with tables/chairs/parasols and sunbeds. The pool area is nicely kept with sunbeds available.

The hotel itself was very clean throughout but could do with some t.l.c. There is only one lift which, on occasions, you can wait quite a while for, especially as most of the guests are elderly.

It is in an ideal location for people with walking difficulties as it is right on the sea front with just a quiet road separating it from the promenade. There are plenty of deckchairs and benches available for the elderly to sit on. The shops are very close and there are a few nice bars/restaurants close by.

Overall a very nice hotel in a lovely location.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room - the views are lovely !

Stayed here alone in June for a quick visit to the Isle of Wight. Staff were very friendly and welcoming - even when I arrived a day late! Room was clean and tidy and included a welcome tray with tea and biscuits (had a few flies in my room however as they had left the balcony doors open which was a bit irritating but can't be helped). Bed was firm meaning I had a great nights sleep! The en suite was a bit small but it done the job! Breakfast was delicious and staff were very attentitive but not too overcrowding. They also had a vegetarian breakfast option which I was surprised at, it was all delicious. It was a bit cold when I visited so I didn't venture out to the pool area but the sea view from my balcony was to die for. Overall this hotel was lovely and definitely good value for money, I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view - it's definitely worth it!

just got back from the isle of wight, stayed at the ocean hotel in Sandown. what a lovely hotel. Stay with my mum for 5 days had a lovely room overlooking the gardens and the sea. staff were very friendly and the room was large and well furnished bright and clean. Food was good, we had lots choice and 3 courses at every meal. entertainment was ok but didn't like the singer on Saturday night could have been better. On the whole we really enjoyed our time there, had some lovely days out around the island. Osborne house was my fav, but we went all round the island and there is lots to see and do. Have to say the weather was great too! Wightlink ferries were very good we arrived early both going and coming home and they still got us on broad so we could continue our journey. if you not been to the island do go you won't be disappointed :-) hope to return soon.

Room Tip: we stayed in room number 20 and then room 70, they were both fantastic. and they have a heated pool...

Just spent 6 days at this hotel. Very pleasant and helpful staff. The bedroom was overlooking the High Street but was very quiet in the evening. Large room with comfortable beds and a large bathroom, all kept very clean. Nice restaurant and a good choice of food well cooked and presented. Would have no hesitation at staying here again.

Great views, nice staff (except the chambermaid), and a swimming pool. That's about as much as I can say that is nice. Spent 3 days there and to be frank it felt like a total rip off. Didn't mind the elderly clientele, but did mind that although clean our room needed decorating. The bathroom was tiny and there were no toiletries other than a 10p size piece of soap. Only 3 electrical plugs in the room, not exactly a lot in this day and age. Tooth mugs were flimsy plastic glasses and the courtesy tea and coffee comprised unwrapped tea bags and a generic sachet with coffee granules in it.
If this doesn't sound too bad it is at the price we paid, could have stayed for three nights in a 4 star hotel locally for less money.
Our stay included breakfast- I think we should have asked for a refund- my husband had the vegetarian option- 15 minutes to cook 1 quorn sausage, half a tomato, 1 fried egg, and half a slice of fried bread, not exactly kingly fare. No pots of coffee available, instead it came out of a vacuum flask. It was all just stuck in some sort of 'this is the way we do it' and its not very good.

Room Tip: Do get a sea view with balcony.
