It is true when they say that you get what you paid for. I stayed at the Ocean Hotel as part of a coach trip. The hotel is a 2 star and is well situated between the promenade and the high street. The good point is that it is very central the bad point is that it is very dated. An example is Woodchip wallpaper in the corridors and worn carpets and chairs. I paid for an upgraded room, which was clean and serviced daily, no change of sheets in the 4 nights that I stayed. The room was of average size with basic furniture, the good point was that it had a balcony with a great view over the promenade and sea, the bad point was the bathroom which was small and very dated, and I would say that it had not been updated for 25 years. The staff were always polite and helpful. The décor in the bar area and restaurant was probably the best in the hotel. The food was adequate, but our waiter was very slow, on his day off we had a waitress and the service was excellent. The breakfast was served in small portions but when I asked for extra, it was served without complaint. This is a large hotel and needs a lot of money to be spent on it too bring it up to date.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a balcony room.

I am a holiday organiser for a club and picked this hotel for a group of us in March. They made us very welcome when we went to have a look round in October. They showed us several of the rooms and took us over the public rooms of the hotel. We were impressed with what we saw and decided to book. They made us feel just as welcome as when we saw them last year. Everyone was pleased with their rooms so no complaints there. The staff were very friendly and always asked about your day. He food was lovely and their was plenty of it. The entertainment every night was excellent with music and jokes.
We enjoyed it so much that we have booked again next year and we are taking more people next time.

Room Tip: Sea views are very nice. You are right by the pier and on the esplanade on one side of the hotel and...

The OCEAN HOTEL in Sandown is one of the most beautiful hotels i have ever stayed in on the island, a balcony room is a must as the views are absolutley spectacular, its paradise. Our room was just perfect, it was spacious and exeptionally clean with a large bathroom and a lovely balcony over looking the pool. Our food was delicious, there was a really good choice too and always piping hot, the salads were also wonderfully fresh and plentiful. Pool service at lunch time is fabulous, there's a marvelous choice (if you have any room left from breakfast) from a sandwich to a hot meal. The hotel also offers room service. The Ocean Hotels location is perfect its right in the middle of a gorgeous clean sandy beach. There is also a lift which takes you to every floor, sandown has some lovely shops were you can buy just about everything, a walk along the beach and stopping for a coffee or a clotted cream icecream is a must., its the perfect location for a family holiday, time just stops its that relaxing. The hotel staff are always very helpful and will do everything in their power to make your stay at the Ocean Hotel enjoyable. There is entertainment on each night as well as quizes, bingo and fancy dress its marvelous. We will be back again next July 2014 and look forward to getting a tan as the weathers always hot and also looking forward to Sandown Carnival which celebrates its 125 years this year and not forgetting its famous Cowes Week. We will also be back in November Can't wait, see you all soon.x

Helpful smiling staff, strange arrangement of reception being on mezzanine style floor.
Paid for family room, we had our pram for our baby daughter and stayed with our 2 sons 9 & 5 too, family room furthest away possible up/down stairs (not good with pram) lift tiny, couldn't access the family room without avoiding stairs! Room clean, lots of faded pictures on walls, very small 2nd bed and small cot supplied, redicilously stingey tea tray!!
Breakfast mean! Half of everything 1/2 tomato 1/2 fried bread, 1 sausage, 1 egg 1 bacon - cheap and nasty hot breakfast!! Service polite, surrounded by OAPs... :(

We stayed at the Ocean for our honeymoon and had a room with balcony and sea views - the room was gorgeous and the staff second to none. We never had a problem parking and the location is awesome. The breakfast on first glance was a limited choice but we could ask for what you wanted and they were always helpful. The pool is lovely and clean with towels available at reception. Such a central hotel for bars and restaurants. Our only downside was lack of Wifi in rooms and lack of plugs but this is a olde worlde hotel where you step back in time and actually was quite nice to be away from emails and the like!!

Room Tip: Room 78 overlooks the pool and has far reaching views - it is above the kitchen but we out when coo...

we visited this hotel with a group of 18, I was the group leader so to speak ..we stayed over a long weekend the weather was excellent ..the service was brilliant especially the two bar staff of Stacey and phil. we had a lovely room over looking the sea ..sadly this wasn't the case for some of our group ..some more elderly friends had ato climb lots of steep stairs to get to their rooms and one couple had a brick wall as a view ..if only we had been told of these points before we booked then we could of sorted out different rooms etc but we know for next time as we will be going back ..food was ok the breakfast was lovely but evening meals were ok a little cold sadly ..on the whole a nice very clean place with great friendly staff , another good point ..one of my group had a special diet ..he was very impressed that a staff member seeked him out each day to discuss his evening meals.

Room Tip: ask for sea views and if difficulty walking etc ask for rooms on same level as reception.

Kids are only allowed in the conservatory part of this bar, although seemingly dogs are allowed anywhere?????? We, being my 82 year old mother and my four year old daughter popped in here for lunch and since it was pouring with rain outside and my mother was extremely cold we contemplated sitting near a coal burning stove. The place was empty but sadly, we were approached immediately before we had sat down to be informed that children were not allowed in the main part of the bar but only in the conservatory part which was cold on this particular day.
Our daughter is very well behaved and I always have things to occupy her when we go to places so she does not leave her seat and disturb anyone else. Straight away we decided to leave since my mother was cold and upon leaving we then had to walk past several dogs entering the main part of the bar that were dripping wet and were allowed to stay in this part of the bar. Please explain the thought process to this rule?????? I am a dog lover however I do not feel dogs should be considered and not children???????????????? Shame on whoever came up with this idea???? regardless of the fact that my 82 year old mother was not considered at all in this situation!
My mother and our family have stayed at the Ocean Hotel and have loved it, it is a real shame that someone has destroyed the ambience of this bar bringing in such a stupid rule!
