“Great Bank Holiday Break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2014

Stayed here for August Bank holiday and had a great time.
Rooms are clean, and although a little dated, they are comfortable and well equipped.
We had a Sea view and Balcony overlooking the heated outdoor pool.
Good breakfast every day, and a good and varied evening meal menu.
It was our second visit and we had some friends with us this time who were equally impressed.
Special mention to the great service from all the serving staff at the Bar and in the Dining room, really cheerful and friendly, and the Maids who kept the rooms so clean.
A good base for seeing the Island. We will be back again next year.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are limited and balcony rooms scarce.

Myself, my husband, my mother and father came back to this hotel we stayed here a few years ago and it was great so we thought we would go back for our anniversary we were there from the 1st August 2014 for four nights we booked side sea view rooms - the rooms themselves were very dated with woodchip wall paper my bathroom was very nice, but that is where I can say no more.. my parents room was also dated and it had a avocado bathroom suite when you put the shower on the head pole danced down to the bottom lollll but the room was much larger but needed a full refurb the price we paid I think that they could afford to do them up and make them more comfortable we paid £600.00 each that included our ferry which from our previous stay we thought was worth it - which it was not.. We went for our evening meal the dining room is very nice the food well all I can say is school dinner very poor standard.. The breakfast if you just had what they offered it was small, we asked if we could have extras on ours and this was not a problem very nice.. We complained the second day and was informed that we could not move as the hotel was full and offered us to pay for what we had had and leave if we wanted to, but there was no where else to go, but overhearing a conversation on the second day someone had just arrived and was supposedly offered a free upgrade don't no how true this was.. We cancelled our evening meal and ate out there are some very nice restaurants to the left of hotel. the position of the hotel is great and the hotel grounds are very nice,, All the staff were pretty amazing loved the barmen they were very funny.

We have stayed at this hotel every year for 9 years and absolutely love it. This year being no exception. We arranged sea views privately with the hotel after booking with a coach tour. The rooms given were lovely, over looking the pool with a patio which we sat out on every morning and evening looking at the stunning bay views. Staff as usual were wonderful, can't do enough for you especially Marsella and the team in the dining room. As usual welcomed back like friends and given a lovely table by the window in the dining room. Food was lovely served by our friendly waitress Ola, who even brought me ice cold water with breakfast after I had been struggling with a migraine all night the night before. This continued every day afterwards and was a real help! Great selection of wine and drinks at the bar, Martin the bar man great as usual. Hotel, room, gardens and pool kept spick and span as usual by the dedicated cleaning staff. All staff are friendly, polite and courteous at all times and very
knowledgable about the island. Would not hesitate to recommend a stay here to family and friends. Will be back again as usual. Thanks for a lovely holiday :)

Stayed for 3 nights with 2 children. Only 2 little positives- right on the seafront and on day 1 we had a friendly waitress for breakfast. Other than that, what can we say- smelly room - the smell seemed to be oozing from the old, worn carpet. Dirty, poorly decorated walls with peeling woodchip. Furniture that looks like it has come from a jumble sale. Our room was so bad that we asked to be moved to another- just the same, but the bedding matched and there was an extra window.
Like a scene from the movie Cocoon- felt like we had moved into an old peoples home.
Outdoor pool surface scraped the skin from our children's toes so they were red raw! Anti slip surface? Woken every day at around 6.45 by very loud traffic on high street which is on the back of the hotel. Wifi only if sat in room by reception. How much did we pay.......£644 for 3 nights which included our return ferry from Southampton!!!! Far too expensive for what you get.
Would not recommend to others.

Carol Ann C, Owner at The Ocean Hotel, responded to this review, 4 August 2014
We were surprised to see your comments regarding your stay with us, having addressed your earlier complaint by offering alternative accommodation of which you commented was ‘lovely and bright’ and ‘much better’.

If you had cause for further complaint our Reception and Housekeeping staff are always on duty and would have addressed any problems you had.

In response to your comments:

1. Smell: The room has been constantly occupied and we have received no complaints from other customers apart from yours.
2. The textured wall finishes are in reasonably sound condition however, there is a stubborn recurring water stain above the wardrobe. This unfortunately, is a legacy of the severe winter storms suffered by us all.
3. The bedroom furniture is certainly not from a Jumble Sale. It is good quality oak hotel furniture.
4. The FREE Wifi for our customers is available in the main lounge/bar area as well as the lounge by reception.
5. Swimming Pool: During the period you stayed with us we have twelve other families staying and we had no negative comments from anyone.
6. Traffic: The Hotel is situated in a busy seaside resort with the high street on one side and the sea front on the other, there will always be some level of noise during the high season.

What a shame you did not make these comments during your stay when we could have addressed them. There was always a member of management on duty.

My wife an I spent four nights as part of a coach trip. Both of us having mobility problems we were told everything was on one level with a lift from reception to all floors. No one told us threre were a flight of stairs to climb before getting to reception. Despite advising our tour operator of our wish for a ground floor room and my wifes dietry needs we were allocated a fourth floor room at the end of a corridor in what we can only describe as a box room overlooking the High Street. The room needed a good lick of paint and the carpets were threadbare and torn. On the first night we were refused entrance to the dining room as we were five minutes early, ten minutes later we still couldnt gain access so walked across the road from the hotel to Bellamy's Bistro where we well looked after with an extesnive menu. In fact we ate there every night of our stay. My wifes dietry needs were catered for at breakfast with a box of gluten free cereal and soya milk. Apart from the dining room experience we found the majority of staff friendly and helpful. The hotel would benefit from a makeover and an update.

The Ocean Hotel on the sea front at Sandown is a wonderful place to stay - the sea in front, and the shops right behind. On arrival the hotel seemed slightly old fashioned, it was built in Edwardian times and much of the interior is original. Our week's stay couldn't have been bettered. The staff are friendly and helpful, the room was huge and comfortable, the food delicious and everything that could be done to make us feel welcome had been considered. The meals are served in a light and pleasant dining room, plenty of choice and cheerful waitresses. Evening entertainment is provided. You can sit in the gardens on swim in the outdoor pool, all very relaxed. This is not a cheap holiday, and there seemed some difference between prices paid by coach parties and private guests, which maybe should be considered. However it was worth every penny and I should love to go back again one day.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the street are noisy in the mornings. Rooms in the front have wonderful views over the...

We were booked into the Ocean Hotel, Sandown with Shearings and the experience was somewhat unique.
Remember woodchip wallpaper? All over! The creaking floors were more than a match in volume for my arthritic knees, and the ill fitting and rattling doors on room 90 were worthy of a haunted house. The creaking floors made the rooms burglar proof I would imagine. Might be worth a patent application?
The (very expensive) 8 day holiday, (Shearings dropped the price by £167 per head right after we booked), was saved from disaster by the very friendly staff at the Ocean. Nothing was too much trouble, and the position of the hotel, about twenty yards from the beach, couldn't be bettered. Our 'premier' room (Shearings description), overlooked the Main Street, and if you like an early morning call I guarantee the traffic noise will have you up with the larks. We also, according to Shearings, enjoyed 'premier' dining, although as we ate with everyone else, from the same menu, I'm still not sure what this means?
The Ocean Hotel is just a 'two star', and certainly lives up to it, but we still enjoyed our seven night stay which was worth every penny of £334 pounds. Shame we paid £500 plus.

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are a must here. Rooms overlooking the High Street are very noisy and because there...
