The location of this cottage is excellent. It is close to Ruthven barracks in a rural situation yet easy walking distance to Kingussie. From the patio or lounge we could watch the sheep and lambs and rabbits and numerous birds, both flying over and visiting the feeders. From the patio we watched oystercatcher, curlew, mallard, red legged partridge, Siskin, chaffinch, great and blue tits, jackdaw and great spotted woodpecker to name a few. Also there were swallows and starling nesting. We had rabbits on the patio at night and mallard in the day. Great for nature lovers. The cottage was very well equipped and spotless with everything we needed. The bed was comfortable and the cottage was spacious and well maintained. We enjoyed a daily game of table tennis too. Our hosts were very welcoming and gave us expert guidance on the walking in the area. The recommended walks were really good- local knowledge goes a long way in helping you to plan your day. This was in addition to the folder of suggestions. There was also a book for guests to put their suggestions and tips in which was a good idea. This was one of the best cottages we have every stayed in with excellent hosts.
We had a fantastic holiday with our two young boys, based in Spindrift Cottage. We didn't quite have a full week, so thought we'd need to find a hotel, but the cottage worked out far better value and offered more comfort, space and flexibility. The guest book is stuffed full of comments from people who have stayed more than once- I can see why.
What a great area! There is so much to do within easy reach of Kingussie, and cold weather did nothing to derail any plans. The Highland Folk Museum, the Highland Wildlife Centre, Landmark, cake at the Potting Shed, lunch at the Mountain Cafe, and more stunning forest and lochside walks than you could ever squeeze into one holiday.
The cottage was perfect - not least because Judy and Jules gave us such a warm welcome and are so enthusiastic themselves about the area. Spindrift is clean, warm, well equipped and comfortable. The room next door (shared with the other cottage) has a table tennis table with the boys enjoyed, access to laundry facilities, and several adult bikes available to guests.
We had a blast. As we pulled out of the driveway at the end of the trip, the kids yelled "we'll be back!" Hope they're right!
Just outside Kinguissie with the striking ruins of Ruthven Barracks on the doorstep. Second time staying here for us (family of 4) and still loads to do within a short drive or bike ride. A quick walk from the cottage will get you to the Baracks and a bit further gets you to the RSPB hides.
Sundowner is immaculate, quiet and very well situated. Kingussie is within walking distance ( station too). We thought the cottage was extremely well presented, warm and cosy with all equipment we could want. There is a lovely little terrace overlooking the garden. We would recommend it .
This is really great accommodation, warm and comfortable with all you need. There is plenty of space, and a very good porch area for outdoor clothing/drying etc; also secure storage for bikes.
The location is excellent with cycling and mountain biking opportunities straight from the door, and with an unlimited amount within 30 minutes to an hour's drive in any direction. Great walking too, also all within easy reach.Kingussie is a pleasant village with a co-op and other services less than 5 minutes drive away. I could have stayed a month and not run out of things to do. I wish I could have.
The hosts, Judy and Jules are so friendly and welcoming, and extremely helpful with local information and advice on mountain bike routes etc. I followed their suggestions on a couple of perfect cloudless January days and had some of the most memorable days out I've had. Can't recommend this place enough.
This was our 3rd holiday here at Spindrift Cottage, Ruthven Steadings just outside Kingussie.
Our new hosts Judy and Jules gave us a warm welcome, and it was fantastic to be back. Judy's homemade shortbread gift was delicious.
It really is a beautiful cottage with all modern appliances, cosy and warm with comfy chairs to sink into and watch the birds come and go on the feeders. Even better to sit and watch the snow on Boxing Day!
The double bedroom looks out onto an enclosed courtyard with more bird feeders and past this to Ruthven Barracks. Kingussie is on the doorstep and has a variety of shops a great deli and some lovely coffee and cake shops.
So good we just had to book another week in October.
If you want a beautiful cottage to come back to after a day exploring, skiing, biking or wallking in the Highlands you won't be disappointed.
I rented this cottage for a week. My sister had never been to Scotland so it was good excuse to take her the highlands and see the heart of beautiful Scotland. Lot of interesting places are close by. We saw the Glenfiddich whisky distillery, just over an hour away, went the Lochness monster exhibition about one and a half hour away, went to Fort William and took the Steam engine train to Malliag - wonderful day out, Aviemore is less than half hour away and the mountain train going up the Caringorm for sking and sight seeing is very nice. We also played golf at Boat of Garten and Kingussie golf clubs, they are real gems and enjoying our game. Its also wonderful for bird watchers because there were so many birds coming eat there.
