Our normal holiday choice is usually a top rated hotel / resort in UK or abroad. We were intrigued however by a very simple brochure from Cairngorm Travel Coach Holidays arriving in the post.
We declared many years ago after several shambolic Shearings coach holidays definitely never again however in need of a treat we booked a short break with Cairngorm Travel staying at the Duke of Gordon Hotel. I have to be honest we fully expected the worst but our journey to the hotel went without a hitch.
On our arrival at the hotel the processing took minutes thanks to the hotel reception & our driver (Steve great guide and driver) having it all pre-arranged.
The hotel was very warm and welcoming especially a log fire in the welcoming lounge. The food was plentiful varied be it breakfast or evening meal (one niggle lunch and snack sandwiches in triples not appreciated more for builders I reckon certainly out of place in this fine hotel but nevertheless still very tasty even if you have to train up on big Mac mouthfuls first)
The dining room staff were wonderful ever attentive always looking to give their best in a word brilliant. The bedroom / bathroom were large and spotlessly clean. We may of had a creaky floor board but what the heck lets talk value for money and this hotel excels. Our room was at the rear of the hotel no problem for us, appreciating the efforts of the hotel staff is the key and these folk are excellent.
This hotel is a cosy well run unit for the individual guest and the group. We could have had a niggle over the odd dish but bearing in mind the sheer volume of guests sitting to table some dish may be less than five star in presentation but the taste was consistently good.
The Duke excels in going the extra mile with little touches that mean so much, the piping into dinner, the lovely log fires, the dining room staff wishing us a safe journey and waving us off and many more little gems which mean so much, even the look of sheer disbelief on the face of young well bearded tender of Ghillie's Bar when asked do you serve tea? priceless.
The hotel is situated in a lovely very quiet village it is well worth looking up a Cairngorm short Coach break and get some real value for money. A lovely hotel in a lovely area it does not seek to be pretentious it's values are old fashioned honest good service & good value.
