“Amazing Breakfast”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 May 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights in a Twin Room last weekend. The staff are warm and friendly especially the English lady who served us breakfast the second morning. As well as a decanter of a lovely single malt in your room there is a gorgeous sitting room where you can enjoy a dram in front of an open fire.

The breakfast is delicious and both mornings I enjoyed freshly baked croissants, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with crème fraîche.

The only small issues to the stay were the lack of a full length mirror in the twin room (while getting ready to attend the wedding I had to keep running out into the hallway to use the mirror there) and the lack of a shower - there is a shower attachment to the bath taps but it would have been great if there was a stand to hold it up to enable you to shower standing up. Otherwise it was a wholly enjoyable say in a breathtaking location.

I can't get over how amazing this place is. We were staying in a double room for 2 nights. The staff were so warm and relaxed that we really felt at home. We had a small whisky decanter and 2 tumblers waiting for us in the room - a real Scottish welcome :) The view was stunning; we were asked what time we wanted breakfast the next morning - the breakfast is incredible, beautifully prepared, so delicious and everything tastes fresh. Would love to come back one day!

We have stayed here several times over a period of ten years. This latest trip was to celebrate our wedding anniversary. As usual we received a warm welcome from Lydie. We were served up a beautiful dinner having been first presented with a special personalised menu and a glass of fizz in front of a roaring log fire. You are spoiled for choice at breakfast time and Lydie's special muesli has to be tasted it is delish (but she will not divulge the recipe!) Being confirmed Francophiles we just love returning here to enjoy the great comfort, hospitality and gastronomy.

Room Tip: All the rooms that we have stayed in have been lovely.

Our most recent visit to the Auld Aliiance was to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Although we only live a 5-minute drive away we had decided to stay the night. to make more of an occasion of it, knowing that the rooms would be sure to be of the same high standard as the food.

We could not have been treated with greater kindness & thoughtfulness.

Our room was comfortable, spacious and warm, with (for us) unusual views across to Ruthven Barracks - a perfect example of romantic Scottish ruins!

Dinner was, as always. magnificent , with each course so beautifully presented that it seemed almost a crime to actually eat it. We are glad we did - subtle flavours, beautiful ingredients, well judged portions and exquisite attention to detail, We accepted Lydie's recommendation for wine, also very good.

We had not breakfasted at the Auld Alliance before and it was a revelation. The fresh fruit option was presented as a beautiful rosette of wafer-thin slices of melon, apple and strawberries with a centre-piece of blueberries and blackberries and a lattice work of summer fruit coulis. The colour theme was perfect for a ruby wedding and the taste did not disappoint!

I note that one reviewer was disappointed not to be able to make a choice from a varied menu. For us it has been fascinating to see what Lydie will produce, knowing that it will be interesting, original and delicious.

Lydie runs the Auld Alliance with cool charm, humour and sensitivity. Lucky us!

We had an unforgettable evening meal at the Auld Alliance some years ago and resolved then and there that one day we would stay the night. The opportunity arose recently and we checked it was still the same owner and booked up. We had a very nice room with a stunning view, the welcome and the hospitality were warm and friendly and the breakfast was amazing. We also had a delicious table d’hote evening meal, just as excellent as our previous visit. If I had one suggestion to make and it’s definitely not a complaint: it would be nice not to have synthetic pillows and duvet. Down would be softer and warmer and more people expect quality bedding these days. But this would not put us off staying again; we’d probably bring our own!

Three couples stopped here for one night on our way north. We had read about the B & B on Trip Advisor and decided to try. We were not disappointed. We received a warm welcome on arrival and throughout the remainder of our stay Lydie and her staff were most helpful and attentive. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Prior to dinner we had drinks in the lounge with a lovely roaring log fire. We had booked dinner on the basis of recommendations and the food was excellent. As a previous contributor pointed out be aware that there is only one selection per course on the dinner menu which we were not aware of when we booked. We were rather under the impression as a 'restaurant' there would be a selection. Luckily everyone in our party was happy with the evenings selection beautifully presented and prepared, courgette veloute, smoked salmon, venison main course with an unusually presented cheese board - cost £39.50. Breakfast was again beautifully presented and freshly prepared to order. The house is only a short walk from the village centre.

Stayed two nights with a friend. Lydie was very friendly, the house is beautiful and spotlessly clean, and the food was outstanding. Our five course meal lasted two hours, each course a delicacy beautifully made and quite delicious. Will definitely return.
