My wife and I chose The Hamptons from Trip Advisor for a short weekend break to attend a wedding. Here's what we found.

Location: The Hamptons is a large semi-detached Victorian house set into the side of a cliff in the picturesque Torrs Park section of Ilfracombe. It's a ten minute leisurely downhill stroll to the town centre. The house overlooks the town and the hills beyond with the sea visible on the left. There is a steep drive up to the house from the street with a sharp hairpin bend half-way, and this is mentioned on The Hamptons' web site. There is parking for 3 or 4 cars at the top of the drive, and ample on-street parking.
The House: The outside of the house is in good condition and both it and the gardens are well presented. To one side of the front door is a raised deck with a secure childrens' play area. Inside, the decoration of the common parts is to a very high standard with welcoming and relaxingly elegant Long Island/Cape Cod-type influences, blending well with the Victorian features. The air is mildly and pleasantly scented. The open plan guest lounge and breakfast room is light and airy, elegantly and comfortably furnished. There is a DVD collection for guest use, and a well-stocked honour bar. There is quiet chillout background music in the lounge from an iPod on a soundstation. Everything is in its place and spotlessly clean.
The room: We stayed in the Kashmir room, small, but light, well-appointed and comfortable overlooking the front of the house with a view to the town and hills. As the name implied the decorative theme was Indian and this was well carried through in the wallpaper, pictures and curtains. The double bed was comfortable, albeit somewhat hard for my liking. The furniture and bedstead were antique mahogany. There was a facility for making tea and coffee. There was free bottled water, a LCD TV and DVD player. The ensuite bathroom had a small handbasin, a bathtub with shower; there were complimentary toiletries. The whole room looked and smelled lovely. It was immaculately clean, the bathroom equally so.
The breakfast: The owners give you a menu to be filled in at night. The cooked breakfast was freshly prepared with organic ingredients, and was excellent. Although there is a timetable for breakfast, the morning we overslept the owners were quite happy to prepare something for us.
And finally: Friendly and passionate about their creation, nothing was too much trouble for owners Paul and Janine Powell. From arranging a hair appointment to pointing out good places to eat, we were well looked after and made to feel very welcome.
The Hamptons exceeded our expectations by a long way. The owners have lavished attention on the details as well as the overall guest experience, and created a bed and breakfast experience that left us relaxed, refreshed, and looking forward to a return visit.

We stayed in the Osborne Suite for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The room was beautifully designed with lots of thoughtful touches - good lighting, nice toiletries etc. The owners were very charming and helpful - recommending the best pubs and places to eat and tips for days out. We really enjoyed the breakfasts, good quality, nicely cooked, no grease! We would definitely go back if we vist the area again.

We stayed for 3 nights in the Jasmine Room - the room is very comfortable but the bathroom is a little small, that said it's perfectly adequate for a short break. The hotel is stylish and immaculate, the service is fantastic and the owners make you feel very at home. The breakfast's are of excellent quality and are beautifully cooked - there is a lot of attention to detail to make your stay an enjoyable one, from the honesty bar to the DVD collection - they really do go out of their way to make it a pleasurable stay.

A couple of tips for eating out:

1. The Espresso bar - fantastic for a bottle of wine and /or dinner, the food is good quality and the service is excellent. Nice atmosphere.
2. The Quay - Damien Hirsts restaurant on the harbour: Excellent - bit pricey but worth it.

Things to do: Lynton and Linmouth - lovely day out / Woolacombe beach is fantastic / Exmoor Zoo is well worth a trip

After living in Ilfracombe many years ago i returned for one night and was so pleased to find that a London quality hotel had finally reached this seaside town. The service and hospitality is second to none and the rooms are simply beautiful. I have stayed in some of the most prestigious hotels in the UK paying upto £500 a night and i would put this right up there with them. The attention to detail is fantastic and this is one hotel i will be making a return visit to... there is only one hotel in 'combe' worth staying in and this is it!

Ilfracombe is a dull soulless place but this small bed and breakfast is comfortable well run friendly and good value. The owners have gone to enormous effort which is reflected in first rate service and very pleasant if slightly idiosyncratic decor. Two comments but not real criticisms. The small flat screen tvs in our rooms had just four poor picture terrestrial channels from a Welsh transmitter. The steep winding drive was unlit and has some pot holes for the unweary unseeing pedestrian. The solar lamps on the steep steps were not working. That said I wholeheartedly recommend this extablishment.

England desperately needs Janine and Paul Powell (creators/owners/operators of The Hamptons) to show them how to do hospitality with panache. This stylish boutique hotel is every bit as good as those run by my favourite U.S. hoteliers (California’s “Kimpton’s Hotel Monaco Group” and the “Joie de Vivre” chain ---- neither of which are staffed by such charming hosts)

Treat yourself to the The Chantilly, a strikingly elegant, extra large room with bay windows looking out over all of Ilfracombe. Sink into the accommodating roll top tub, cocooned in bridal whites. Soak for half an hour in designer bath oils, while contemplating which of the films you’ll borrow from the well-stocked DVD library in the House Beautiful lounge.

Breakfast on eggs benedict, bagel and lox, kippers, or a great English fry-up, all organic, prepared to order by Chef Paul. Don’t be surprised if the sumptuous repast is delivered to your table by the brilliant hotel designer, Janine Powell.

Everything you need for the perfect get-away is here. Wi-fi works first time every time. Pretty cushions galore. Excellent toiletries. Honour bar. Lounge and breakfast room as tastefully appointed as the bedrooms. Excellent housekeeping. Best location in Ilfracombe. Warm, welcoming hosts.

During our three days at The Hamptons, we had to tear ourselves away from the place. We noticed other guests experienced the same dilemma. Nobody wanted to leave the comforting oasis Janine and Paul created.

A new standard for hospitality has been set. Let’s hope other UK hoteliers flock to The Hampton’s generous door for lessons in hospitality and design.

This is a really lovely hotel; beautifully designed and comfortable. Breakfasts are excellent. The best bit is the service - attentive without being overbearing, Janine and Paul helped us out with recommendations, directions and maps.

The only downside is that Ilfracombe itself isn't so nice! It is a great base for coast walking and trips into Exmoor, but the shops and nightlife leave a lot to be desired!
