“perfect for what it is”
Reviewed 3 September 2013

On tour here and the hotel ticks all boxes, clean, efficient, friendly, decent food, modest bar prices. Room all you could expect. Close to the sea and harbour also the town is a short uphill walk away.

Stayed one night in August. Slightly concerned with the location on arrival as it overlooks buildings in disrepair, but its a short easy walk to the front. The staff could not have been more friendly, the room was comfortable and very clean and the breakfast was the best we had in our tour of Devon including a four star hotel! The bar area lacks atmosphere and needs cosying up! Bit like sitting in a public cafe , would definitely stay again.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a superior room

Not the sort of place I'd normally pick but I needed a room for the night at short notice and there was a single at the Carlton. Booked at 2pm on Saturday for that night so prepared for anything.
The good points. Friendly and helpful management, cheerful staff, very comfy bed, good breakfast with rapid service. Interesting fellow guests. All areas clean and well maintained. Comfortable.
Not so good: my basement single room was small but functional and a bit tired.
But for the price and for a knackered traveller who just needed a no frills bed for the night it did just what it says on the sign. B&B
And if I find myself in Ilfracomebe again I will return because the Carlton does all that its ETB 2 star rating suggests.

Room Tip: Wouldnt recommend the basement singles for anything other than functionality!

Just got back from a short break in this hotel and enjoyed it so much that I am writing my first ever review. Everything from the warm welcome to the comfy beds, fresh linen, good English breakfast (high quality sausage), friendly helpful staff, and excellent location for exploring the harbour and beach area, went to make this a really nice stay for my wife and I. We will definitely be recommending to our friends as a perfect base for exploring North Devon.

My Wife and I arrived on the 4th July and stayed for three nights in one of the superior rooms. We weren't disappointed. The bed was so large it could have slept three. Mattress was comfortable with no lumps, bumps and dips. Linen was clean and fresh with a multitude of pillows to choose from.
The room was facing the front road, but it's hardly used by any traffic so it was lovely and peaceful. The one annoyance is that all the doors have automatic closers for fire regulations and people coming back late at night seem to forget others may already be trying to sleep and let the doors bang behind them. Then, I suppose it's like this in most hotels.
Parking is limited at the hotel but you can always find a space in the nearby roads.
Breakfast was OK and served with efficiency.
All in all we were looking for a base camp to stay whilst visiting a friend in Ilfracombe and we will definately be coming back to the Carlton.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are definately worth the extra judging by other reviews

I think we stayed we stayed in a different hotel to most of the reviewers on this site. We stayed Saturday night and wouldn't stay again. The room was tiny and ensuite was the tiniest I have ever been in, not even enough room to turn around in. Bed was uncomfortable and pillows hard. If it was a b&b charging £40-50 a room a night it would not be so bad but £80 for something you can't swing a cat in is a rip off. Bathroom smelt really strongly of cleaning fluid but it hadn't been used very much. Breakfast was an experience, never been asked to choose cereals before and they bring them to you, used to just helping myself. Cooked breakfast was not good and I couldn't eat it. No-one asked about our stay when we left, so I guess they just don't care.

Lovely hotel and room - the bed was enormous. Staff went above and beyond to help, even finding a tie when we'd forgotten ours and supplying us with iced water for our morning hangover. The breakfast was really good and the night porter was a brick to put up with a random group of wedding revelers (including the bride and groom) until the wee small hours of the morning. All in all a very pleasant hotel and we would definitely stay again if we were in the area.
