When you arrive there is a sign by the door bell (as another person put reviewed on this site) but it is an amusing sign. It basically says, after you ring the bell, remember its a victorian house and we might be up at the top, it goes through a whole list of amusing reasons why there may be a delay in answering the bell, then it says if you've read this whole sign, and we still haven't answered... ring again. I'm not sure about the other reviewer, but I found it funny.
We were greeted by Ann the owner, and as we were habing one of there special undercover car spaces, her husband Dudley came out and directed me where to go (only about 50yds from the guest house). We paid for a double room, but was given a family room with one double and one single bed. The room was lovely, and the complimentary tray of bits and bobs was brilliant. Much more than I usually find in a b&b. (Shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, Shoe shine, Sewing kit, Shaving kit, Nail file set, Toothbrush, cotton buds, etc) There was even a bowl of sweets and a bottle of water waiting on the table, it was such an inexpensive, yet wonderful extra touch. The welcome pack had lots of useful information about the room and ilfracombe itself. We were going golfing the following morning, so asked if our breakfast could be served half an hour early, this was done with no problem. The breakfast is cooked fresh and is worth the 15 minute wait, I much prefer a small wait, than have to eat warmed up precooked food. We also had 2 slices of toast each, but were offered more if we wanted.. perhaps the neagative reviewer was too shy to ask for more. The view from the breakfast room is amazing, we enjoyed our stay. The only negative, is that the tv signal is intermittent. We had no watchable telly, but this is a reception problem, not through the fault of the guest house. But we had a dvd player in our room, so could have used that as an alternative if we'd needed to.
If we return to ilfracombe, we will definately be staying here again. It is literally a 2 minute walk to the harbour, which was nice and handy.

The Avalon is a great value place. We stayed for two nights book-ending a trip to Lundy and Ann & Dudley who own and run the place, could not have been more helpful and friendly.

Location is good, with some rooms having sea views. And although the rooms are compact, there is everything you need for a good nights sleep. The breakfast selection and quality is good too, with veggie cooked breakfast option on offer.

Its a small walk up a hill from the harbour (not strenuous) and in a quiet area. Less mobile guests should book a lower floor room, as there is no lift.

We liked it lots and, it is good value. Thanks.

My parents, my partner and I enjoyed our 2-day stay in this guesthouse. The facts that our rooms were a little on the small side and may enjoy a minor bit of modernising of decor did not matter once we set eyes on the incredible views from our windows. My mum was blown away by the fact that she was able to look out at the sea while lying on the bed. The owners were super friendly, parking right outside, breakfast good, loved the extra hospitality bits in the rooms (tooth brush etc.). Good value for sure and the location is great.

If you are looking for a good value guest house in Ilfracombe, you can't go far wrong with this one. We paid approximately 60 GBP for an ensuite double room for a night with a view of the sea. It was extremely pleasant to hear the sound of the sea from the room as you drifted off to sleep. The breakfast was comprehensive with fruit, cereal and full english breakfast offered. Although there is little parking on the street outside the hotel, there is some spaces rented by the hotel which can be used, further down the road. The only downside was that the bathroom was a bit tight but to be expected in properties of this age.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view

We stayed for one night before travelling to Lundy. The owners were very friendly and welcoming and helpful with putting on an early breakfast for the Lundy sailings. The room was clean and comfortable with an extensive hospitality tray including a spare toothbrush. Your breakfast table is reserved for you and everything is brought to you. No rush for the breakfast buffet. Excellent, a real gem.and great value.

Room Tip: There is a ground floor room available which could be useful for disabled guests although some stair...

Everything was over and above what I expected, would highly recommend this place to stay, in fact I've already booked up again to take the family later in the year. Ann and Dudley could not have been friendlier or more helpful.

Stayed one night and the hotel was lovely and in character with the rest of Ilfracombe .
The hotel was very clean through out.
The room was great with lots of attention to detail, everything you could want was there and the sea view was superb.
Breakfast was hearty and fresh with plenty of choice and was excellent.
We will definitely be staying there again
Thank you Dudley & Ann
