“Very pleasant stay”
Reviewed 6 July 2011

Rod and Helen were good enough to offer us one of the nice seaview rooms (room 8) at short notice (no harm in asking!) and we enjoyed a fabulous sunset.
Breakfast very tasty too.
Helen told me they've only been the owners since November and they do make you feel very welcome with a pot of tea and biscuits on arrival.
Wish them every success!

It's easy to find just of the main road into Ilfracombe in a nice quiet location.

It's a nice walk into town for plenty of restaurant choices but uphill on the way back!

Breakfast was very good with cereal choices, yogurt, fruit, juices, toast and full English cooked to order.

Couldn't really fault a thing!

We Arrived in the middle of the afternoon and were greeted with a lovely cup of tea and home made biscuits. The property host all period features and the proprietor had lots of information about its history. The building itself is imaculate, spotliessly clean and of a high standard and all rooms are en-suite with tea and coffee making facilities. The breakfast was very comprehensive with a wide variety on offer daily. A very relaxed and enjoyable stay not really geared up for very young children however older children tend to bring their own amusement so with that in mind we would recommend this B&B to families and will be returning to Varley House on our next visit to Illfracombe.

Room Tip: Family room 4, couples room sea view Val Doonican

We found Varley House late in the day, and were welcomed in the elegant lounge with a cup of tea and biscuits, and lots of leisurely conversation - just what we needed to wind down... a wonderful, huge old hotel, impeccably clean and restored and furnished tastefully and appropriately for its historic period....glorious view over the harbour..... Jason, one of the hosts, insisted on carrying our luggage up from the car and went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable and knew what amenities Ilfracombe had to offer... cant recommend this place enough, the night here was one of the highlights of our six week throughout B&Bs in England, Scotland and Wales... fantastic...

We stayed for 3 nights in a family room with our boys aged 11 & 12. The room was very spacious, comfortable, clean and was tidied daily. Jason could not have been more welcoming and helpful telling us about the local area and offering good advice about the places that we wanted to visit. Breakfast was delicious and this guest house has a 5 star food hygiene rating from Scores on the Doors. The location is good - not too far from the town centre and very close to a pleasant cafe which has a variety of activites available such as pitch & putt, bowls, tennis ,table tennis... I would totally recommend staying here but just one point - do not eat at the Dolphin Restaurant by Ilfracombe harbour - we had a meal there which was dreadful!!

Jason, one of the hosts, welcomed us in with a tray of tea of biscuits which was most appreciated after our arduous journey. The room was clean and completely adequate for our needs. They cleaned and tidied it daily. Breakfast was superb and ample. We were never made to feel rushed or that anything was too much trouble. We would definately recommend this type of treatment to anyone thinking of a break.
