“Nice place to eat.”
Reviewed 10 June 2014

We came upon The Smugglers after being turned away from a nearby fish & chip shop, as they were 'closing'.

We were warmly greeted by the waiting staff and had a choice of seating available to us, as they weren't overly busy. Our waitress was attentive without being overbearing and was very efficient.

Service overall was prompt, the menu offered a wide variety of dishes, maybe too many, but the meals we had were both well presented and cooked well. Not 'Haute Cuisine' but good food that was value for money. We both had fish which was cooked properly and the portions were good & filling, to the point where SWMBO could only manage ice cream for dessert whilst I plumbed for the 'homemade sherry trifle'. Not sure which bit was homemade & maybe the chef was a bit abstemious with the sherry!

Overall a very pleasant evening out with meals that met our expectations in both quality & budget. Recommend for both service & food. Not sure about the 'kitsch' seafaring decor but it was pleasant enough & the place was very clean.

Nice evening meal. Thanks.

“A little Gem”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We visited the restaurant on Sunday evening. Just managed to get a seat ,the restaurant quickly filled up (always a good sign). The 3 young waitress were professional and so very friendly and happy and smiling. The service was excellent. Fab food. Steaks cooked just to our liking. The seafood cocktail was so fresh and full of taste. And of course a liqueur coffee to end a fab meal ! Thank you!

“Fun decor - worth a visit”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We found this restaurant whilst on holiday and couldn't resist giving it a try. The decor is really fun and the booths are lovely. Friendly staff, good portion sizes and not bad value for money. We had a great visit, many tables were reserved, we were lucky to be able to fit in. Would recommend it for a good meal in an interesting setting.

“Good value, family friendly, spotlessly clean”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

Basic but satisfying food served by friendly staff. The place is busy during peak times, but doesn't take bookings. Families with small children are as welcome as couples, singles and adult groups. Food is simply presented but portions are reasonable. The wine list is particularly reasonably priced (Muscadet at £13 highly recommended!)

“wouldn't go again!”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Wanted a fair priced, filling meal. I can't say we didn't get that! however, the thing I really couldn't get me head around, were the completely mismatched accompaniments! For example, a fish pie (topped with mashed potato!) came with chips?! many of the fish dishes, for example salmon with a prawn sauce, came with mushrooms and onion rings?!

Maybe this is a personal preference, but I've certainly never seen such random mixtures of food on a plate! I resorted to the lamb shank, which was one of the few meals I could find that came with traditional sides, it was very average, and could quite possibly have come from the freezer!

Still, you don't know until you try! ashame though because the restaurant itself and great character, very seaside themed and a warming atmosphere. But that was where it ended for me.
