“Good self-catering accomodation, superb pool, great location, excellent staff”
Reviewed 8 May 2010

Two adults, two kids under 6yrs and a dog, we stayed in the self-catering cottages in the grounds of this hotel. We found ourselves to be in an excellent country location within easy reach (15minutes drive) of local amenities (petrol, tesco, child friendly pubs, beach -Woolacombe, harbour & town-Ilfracombe, Tarka trail for kids scooters or bikes-5 minutes). Only a few hundred yards off the main A361 which is the main road to get you around North Devon, the road to the hotel was so local that every morning i walked my dog for an hour up and down the road and only met 3 cars and two people on horses in a week!
The accomodation was better than average, with all modern facilities that our family needed. Our only complaint was that the double bed was a bit tired making you roll together whether you wanted to or not - so if you don't get on with your partner it might not be for you.
The swimming pool is one of the best i have ever used! It is kept at a very warm temperature allowing young children like ours to be in it for over an hour every day without feeling cold and the feature of it being in a converted barn with a water wheel inside the barn is very attractive.
The only disappointment of a most enjoyable week was when we had a cooked breakfast on our last day and my scrambled eggs were rubbery and a bit burnt - (the rest of the breakfast was excellent).
We will be going back.

Dear Reviewer

So sorry to hear that such a simple thing as an inadequacy of the telephone system has left a poor taste - when we've tried so hard to market the Hotel and Restaurant properly.

We inherited a telephone system with which we've never really been happy and every so often, we find that messages are not stored and the fones don't ring but evidently, to the caller we are not responding! Of course, we don't know!

Last month we started the review of a new system at an extortionate cost and this will be ordered very soon.

I am very sorry that anyone has been inconvenienced and we hope that this will not be repeated but please do not give up on us! We shall look forward to meeting and treating anyone who comes to see us - and soon with a comprehensive new fone system! Thank you for taking the time to comment because otherwise how would we even know?

Best wishes Philip Milton

Just got back from a one night stay here, thank heavens it was only one night. Having paid £150 for bed & breakfast we were hoping for a welcoming country house welcome.

Sadly from the first moment of greeting it was clear that was not to be. We were rushed to reception, to be dealt with "because we're all hands to the deck getting ready to serve dinner", only to be told that we couldn't eat there as they were fully booked. After expressing our disappointment that no food - even sandwiches - was on offer after a 6 hour drive, with no apology we headed to our room in deepening gloom.

The room was very disappointing, the bathroom was definitely in need of updating, and very naff furnishings throughout. the large dead mosquito on the bed a particularly nice tough. I took a cold, then hot, then cold etc shower, dried off to the sound of clanking pipes before my husband went down to plead for some room service in lieu of a table.

Apparently that wasn't possible, even sandwiches, because "we are fine dining", actually it was nil by mouth! Eventually my husband persuaded them to give us a table and we ate a surprisingly good meal. Quite amusingly the party of 16 expected for dinner failed to arrive, and we wondered whether past guests had found an inventive way to make their point about the treatment they received in an innovative way!

Take our advice, eat but don't sleep there! Apologies for over scoring, but the site doesn't allow you to score zero for any category.

We were very disappointed with this review. In fact, the Smiths have tried to defraud us by leaving without paying for their evening meal, wine and coffee. We have considered going to the police about this as it was very clear to them - and they've confirmed the B&B rate in their review. If the money is not forthcoming we shall do just that.

We are a welcoming Country House Hotel. The Smiths booked for Bed and Breakfast and only for one night, a busy Saturday in the height of the season - many places will not take one night bookings at all any more because of the costs involved with changing the sheets, etc. They declined to book evening dinner despite it always being offered when they booked (and a very generous concessionary rate applies). Even then, why did they not ring en route to make sure we could cater for them, especially as they were becoming more and more hungry? If 'no' they could have zipped down the road to a nearby pub even if nothing like as good as our fare.

They failed to confirm when they were arriving. They did they ring to say they had been delayed. Yes, they came as evening dinner was in full swing. Did they really expect chef and waiting staff to drop everything to arrange some room service..... Yes, we had a possible big party arriving but in the end, they were no shows - always a disappointment and being followed-up but it does happen. We have plenty of fantastic food reviews if they want to see them.

I have had to file a report because both customers were extremely "rude, bullying, intimidating and aggressive" to the Staff ("Mr Smith was so foul to me verbally that another guest leapt to my defence after his unpleasant tirade" said the staff member). It was not our problem that their journey was lengthy and despite not being sure if we could cater for them because of pre-bookings, we did do so and seated them in a very timely fashion at 7.45pm and they had a good meal, as they have confirmed. As employer and licensee I cannot and do not tolerate this type of intimidating and rude behaviour to my staff from anyone. Other guests noted to the staff how concerned they were and asked if they were ok - as well as making a special point of tipping £40 to help make up!

The room - the hot water is absolutely fine. I have checked it myself. If they had a problem, why didn't they note it and if genuine perhaps we could have offered them another room? The views are lovely, the room spacious and welcoming. No, not everything is new but that is not what we are offering and nor are we charging for it. It is all in the quietessentially quaint character we are trying to create. A dead gnat on the bed.... it could have arrived seconds before they did but for goodness sake, we are right in the middle of the Countryside and if they wanted a cheap, town B&B then why didn't they book one? Our rates cover for the lovely heated swimming pool and other facilities and certainly, for what we offer and where we are, we are half comparable local places.

I am always sad when we disappoint anyone. Our motto is that we are always trying to do things better - yet we'll never be perfect. We welcome customer comments and indeed complaints because with genuine issues, we can do something about them even if it is for future guests' comfort but it is even worse when someone like this leaves a disingenuous report - as well as trying to leave without paying for their meal. We don't want that type of customer back again, nor indeed to North Devon - sorry.

Unfortunately I cannot give a review on the bedrooms at this hotel as I was staying self catering at a local caravan park. However after our first night camping in the wet weather I decided that my partner and I would eat out as a treat the following night. I am so glad I noticed the Trimstone Manor restaurant advertisement in the free North Devon leaflet received during check-in because we stumbled upon one of the best restaurants in the Devon and (West Yorkshire as well) areas. It was so good we visited twice during our week long stay.

The staff were really friendly, the hotel bar area and restaurant were spotlessly clean and the food was outstanding. The new chef Jon Hughes is exceptional. His menus are quite inspirational and change daily to reflect the local produce available.

I thought the food was some of the best I have tasted and well worthy of a mitchellin star. Lets hope a mitchellin assessor visits soon.
I am not going into detail regarding the menus and food that myself and partner tried during both our visits as some critics do as I am not a critic I am only a lover of great food and I would just recommend that any one reading this gives the restaurant a try. You will not be dissappointed.

We selected Trimstone as a base for business in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe- its always good to be a little out of town so you can relax before or after the business meetings.

Trimstone Manor has a cheerful bar and the restaurant food was outstanding. The Menu was varied and the Chef lived up to his repuation; infact the highlight was the dessert- a strawberry millefeuille which was delicious.

The accomodation was comfortable and we slept very well while the breakfast set us up for the day.

No time to try out the swimming pool on this occasion!
