“Good value friendly hotel in good location”
Reviewed 25 April 2011

We had a pleasant 3 night break at this hotel in the centre of Ilfracombe. Staff were very polite and helpful. Room was adequate, only disappoin ment was that it had only got a bath and not a shower. Food was of a good standard. Breakfast was adequate, having the option of cereals followed by a cooked breakfast. Dinner menu had an offering of 3 starters, mains and desserts. A vegetarian option was also available. All in all a good value break at a nice family run hotel

Stayed here for three nights and it was just like Falty Towers. The rooms were dirty and although I had a decent bathroom, my friends encountered bathrooms which had black mould. The meals were like school dinners and I have never been to a hotel where half a slice of white bread was placed on every side plate for dinner.Although I was fortunate and had a single room which had supposedly been renovated, I thought the room looked tired. There was thick dust on the headboard and a dead wasp on the floor. In addition, the teapot had not been emptied from the previous occupant and there was a packet of half eaten cheese straws in the drawer. Plusses: the water was hot and the bed linen was clean.

Spent a 5 day holiday at this very friendly family run hotel We were immediately welcomed with a lovely cup of tea while our cases were brought in from the coach and then received our key from reception no irritating queue for key for lift. Our room was spacious, clean, warm but airy, beds were comfortable and hostess tray and television all working and available, plenty of wardrobe and drawer space.
Food was excellent, variable and tasty all home cooked and service was good.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. Entertainment each night first class.
Altogether a fantastic holiday looking forweard to another one staying here.

Room Tip: Steps up to the hotel but a helpful hand rail.

My Parents stayed at this Hotel last Month and have asked me to record the following review. We have just returned from the Grosvenor Hotel. We were given tea or coffee upon arrival and our cases were taken to our rooms. We found the room very clean as were the towels and bed linen. The shower and toilet were also clean. Meals were very good and served by friendly staff. Evening entertainment very good with a free drinks bar between 7pm and 11pm. Daily papers were available to purchase from reception each morning. Room was fully heated and there was plenty of hot water for the shower etc. Tea and coffee making facilities were available in the room.

I just wanted to offer my support for this well run and friendly family hotel, in the much under-rated pretty seaside town of Ilfracombe. Let's be realistic here, no it's not a 5 star luxury hote, but it doesn't pretend to be. We've been regular family visitors for the past 5 years, when we just haven't had much spare income to spend on holidays. We always get a very warm and friendly welcome at The Grosvenor, the staff always make you feel like they value your custom. There's always plenty of food and the menu changes every night with the odd 'special treat' thrown in during your stay. It's not fine dining, but again, they don't make any pretences, if that's what you want, there are a growing number of restaurants emerging in the town that are well worth a visit.
And finally, yes I agree not a lot changes at The Grosvenor, (although I disagree about it not been clean !), but for me and my family, that's been rather reassuring during a very up and down period trying to keep my own business afloat, so let's keep these reviews in perspective. If your expectations are realistic, you'll enjoy yor stay... same about the British weather though !!

may i ask all those who are considering a visit to the Grosvenor Hotel Ilfracombe to take the review written on the ???????? to be an inaccurate and in isolated view of the wonderful and excellent service provided by this hospitable, friendly family run hotel.

personally i have visited this establishment for over two decades and certainly for the last 6 years i have taken a party of 50 plus people for a relaxing break.

never has there ever been any negative feedback from those being entertained by the proprieters.

it must be understood that the premises are old and any complaints and concerns raised by patrons have always been dealt with promptly throughout my experience.

i must applaud the owners at their efficient way in dealing with problems and that were presented during my visits.

well with regards to food i can assure you that everything is home cooked traditional cuisine using the finest of ingredients and the choices have always been varied.

if i can close with one final comment, please appreciate that peoples reviews are based upon their perception at the time and certainly not a true reflection of my experience.

the venue has fulfilled my and many others expectations for several years and will do for the future too.

My wife Sue and I stayed at the Grosvner Hotel with a large group of 50 family and friends arranged through my brother David. Sue and I are seasoned travellers and used to staying with our family in Hotels ranging from two star to five star plus hotels.

This was our first stay in the Grosvner Hotel we had a fantastic weekend break our en-suite room was exceptionally clean with the usual tea and coffe making facilities with copious amounts of tea bags, coffee, drinking chocolate and sugars. The remote colour television worked easily and the bed was extremely comfortable, we had as much hot water as we needed, the large bath could be filled to the brim within five minutes. The white towels were unmarked and soft, the all important loo paper was of a good quality. The radiators were easily adjusted on a thermostat and coped with the cold nights magnificently.

The resteraunt was arranged in tables of four adojining each other in line which meant our family of 16 mixed adults and children could sit together. Our watress Sally is worthy of our highest praise and served each table of four as they were ready and would easily put to shame waiters that we have encountered in some five star resteranuts. The food was fresh home made and of excellent quality served on hot plates except for those who chose salads of course. There was vegetables left over in the dishes such was the large serving given to each table. The sweets were again home made with a choice of cheese board which held at least five or six different cheeses. The portions given were plentiful as were the different choice and number of biscuits to accompany the cheese.
This was followed by tea or coffee again we were offered top ups if required.

The entertainment on Friday and Saturday evening was excellent the performers knew how to keep people dancing once they were up. The service at the FREE bar was very efficent and friendly.

I strongly reccomend this good quality for money Hotel and for the position where it is located in Ilfracombe near enough opposite the new theatre and on a level walk to the pubs, shops and resteraunts in the harbour.

Please note that the steps leading to the front door of the Hotel are steep with a good solid brass rail to assist you. It is however quite easy to access the hotel by the disabled access to the right hand side of the Hotel. Some of our group were in their 90's and coped with the steps without too much difficulty. Once in the Hotel the floor from the reception area to the lift, lounges and resteraunt are all on one level without steps.

To get to the High Street shops, as Ilfracombe is built on a hilly valley the easiest way to get there is by bus or taxi although it is only about a couple of hundred yards above the Hotel up a steep gradient. You can take the easier walk using the road but it is still a steady climb up a lesser gradient which our friends managed in their motorised wheelchairs.
