My girlfriend and I stayed 3 nights at the Grosvenor at the beginning of September. We were part of a large coach party. After reading many of the reviews, we were both quite worried about the hotel, even though we knew it was only 2 star rated and we had paid very little for the whole trip.

I can only imagine that the people who have written the poor reviews about this hotel had set their expectations too high. If you are expecting 5 star standards, then this hotel does not deliver, but then it is only 2 star, so why would you expect it to?

Yes, there are stairs which are narrow and if you are elderly could be difficult to negotiate, but there were bell boys to take and fetch any heavy luggage to and from rooms. The lift only serves part of the hotel. We didn't use it since stairs don't pose a problem for us. I have no problem with people less able than us being given rooms better served by the lift.

The rooms, particularly the bathrooms, could do with freshening up, but once again, for 2 star accommodation they are more than adequate. The only problem we had was the noisy sea gulls, but the hotel can hardly be blamed for that! The bed was considerably more comfortable than one we spent 2 weeks on in a 5 star hotel in Turkey earlier this year. We stayed in room 349 which had a double and a single bed and even had a trouser press! Towels were replaced if required, but like many hotels these days you are encouraged to help the environment and only have them changed when necessary.

The public areas were, I thought, were well maintained and very clean. It looks like the outside of the hotel has been given a recent make-over. The choice of colour is perhaps best described as mustard.

We found the staff and waitresses polite, helpful and friendly.

The quality and quantity of food on offer at both breakfast and evening meal was excellent considering what we paid. I have paid far more for far less in the past. Much of the food was fresh and home cooked.

Breakfast consisted of a choice of serial, juices, grapefruit segments and prunes as a self service first course and then a waitress served choice of full english and one or two other options. Tea and coffee was waitress served and you could have as much as you liked.

The evening meal was served at a set time of 6.30pm. It consisted of a three course meal plus coffee from a set menu with a limited number of choices. We found the food to be of a high standard and there was more than enough to satisfy our appetites. Once allocated a table on the first night, you remained there for all subsequent meals.

Entertainment was provided in the hotel each night. On the first night there was bingo followed by a quiz (no prizes for winning though). On the second night there was a singer (singing songs mostly from the '50s and '60s) and on the third night there was a disco, although from what I gather, quite a slow paced one!

The hotel is well situated close to the seafront and within easy walking distance from all of Ilfracombe's attractions. We could actually see the sea from our room.

I can see that parking could be a problem, but as we were part of a coach party it didn't pose a problem for us.

To sum up, our expectations were met or exceeded on all counts and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who fancies visiting Ilfracombe, certainly as part of a coach party and for the price we paid.

The hotel was OK, nothing special. There are 70 rooms and only 6 parking spaces. We arrived on a Friday and got parked, but after we went out on Saturday we got back to find all the spaces full. Most of the car parks have 24hr charges with a max stay of 4hrs. We were lucky that we managed to get a space on the road at the other end of town (parking is a premium!), and only had to pay up until 6pm, and left it there overnight as Sunday parking is free although it was annoying that the car was a 15minute walk away!
There is a lift in the hotel, but they seemed to put all of the old people on the side of the building that had a lift, us youngsters (30’s) got the side without the lift and had 5 flights of stairs to our room. It was also cold, I know we went in August, but it was the coldest August for a long time, and the room was freezing at night.
Also, house keeping didn’t change our towels or even take away the dirty cups that we had made tea in.
Breakfast was very nice and our waitress was lovely, but we were scrunched in the corner table right by a door that was in use, with people constantly filtering past-just what you want when you’re trying to eat!

Room Tip: If your'e taking your car, don't stay here.

The first peice of advice here is to take Trip Advisor with a pinch of salt. 80% of the reviews here are from people whom feel strongly enough about something to complain about it. Only 10% who have good service or experience will shout about it.

Reading the reviews below there are some reaccuring themes regarding this hotel, and to be honest most are reasonable, but I feel I should probably try and dispell some of the trends because most are unfair on the place and are likely written by folk who have fairly dim outlooks on life and maybe need to chill out a bit, trust me it'll do you good, postpone that heart attack that you'll be having soon!

So on the negative side, yep there are stairs, nothing worth worrying about though. Yep it is a little dated and could do with a freshen up, but nothing offensive and everything we came across was clean. Only slept here though, spent our time out and about doing things so any complaints were minimal! My main and only real complain was the shower in our bathroom, there was a broken bracket so had to hold shower head, an inconvenient situation but nothing more, didn't waste time complaining because time and energy was better spent actually holidaying.

The car park is small, but I think it's probably lucky to have one at all, with many Devon and Cornish towns having this issue. We parked there every day because the hotel was full of coach parties.

Location is perfect, and whilst the description is a little on the "estate agent" side, it is actually as close as it gets because Ilfracombe doesn't have an actual promenade per se.

Breakfast was a good start to the day, staff friendly with lots of good mornings and smiles, and baring the 'characteristics' of the place, it's suited us pretty well as a base for exploring the area.
