“Friendly Family-run Hotel”
Reviewed 9 March 2013

I stayed at the Grosvenor with Just Go! Holidays in early March.
The hotel was clean and comfortable.
The owners are very friendly and accommodating.
Most of the staff are polite and helpful.
I have stayed in 3 other hotels in Ilfracombe before, in my opinion the Grosvenor is the best so far.

Went to this hotel with a Bus tour last weekend. On arrival all seemed to be Good with the Young lads taking up the cases to the rooms, on arrival at the rooms there was no heating available with radiators stone cold, heating was only on for a few hours each night. One of the guests was a heating engineer and explained to the owners what the problems were and how to fix them, needless to say we all came home sick.
When booking this trip we upgraded Rooms but the upgrade was no different from any other rooms, the TV was an old square 14" with 4 channels.
The food was adequate but the choices ran out quickly, our Sunday Breakfast never arrived and we all got up and left and bought breakfast out. There were Two Bus loads of guests with about 100 guests total there were only 4 waiters to serve us slow
Would not return to this hotel again

Booked this weekend break through Groupon and we were pleased we had not paid full price. We had read the reviews on Tripadvisor so weren't expecting great things but were hoping for the best. However, we were still disappointed and would not plan a return visit in the near future. The hotel is well placed, being only a short walk away from all amenities and the lovely harbour. However, that's about as far as it goes. The staff were very warm and welcoming and eager to please. We had a side view over next door hotel which was covered in scaffolding and in the process of being refurbished. Take note Grosvenor!!! If you aren't very mobile then you must ask for a room on the first floor as that is as far as the lift goes. Our room, which we paid extra to have an upgrade on, was on the last but top floor and we had to climb up and down 35 steps each time. The room numbering is a bit off the wall also - we got completely lost a few times. The entrance and ground floor reception rooms are ok but very dated. Our up-graded room was very ordinary and not very warm. Only one little radiator to heat the entire room (photo attached) Granted the weather was freezing, but I was cold. When we got back to the hotel one afternoon at 3.30 p.m. the heating wasn't on. I rang reception to be told it comes on about 4.00 p.m. I complained that we were freezing and it came on very quickly after that. The bed linen was sheets and blankets with a top throw (last century). All were absolutely spotless clean but the throw and one of the sheets were frayed - not nice. The breakfast was edible but you got either juice or cereal - not both as more usual - strange. The sausages were disgusting so next morning I asked for just eggs and bacon - not much can go wrong there. There was entertainment laid on each night and the DJ's made a great effort to get people engaged but most of the audience were quite elderly and not bothered. I applaud the entertainers for having a go! The hotel owners definitely need to invest seriously in upgrading and refurbishing this hotel - which could be fantastic given it's location. I would go back to Ilfracombe but not to the Grosvenor - unless big changes take place.

Room Tip: If you are not very mobile ask for a first floor room to be able to avail of the lift.

I wanted to come back to Ilracombe where i had grown up to visit and was not dissapointed. The hotel was warm and the staff very welcoming, we stayed two nights and our room was at the front of the hotel it was nice to be able to look out onto the sea front. The room was large and the bed was comfortable, and the room was warm. Plenty of space to move around. The food was good and staff very helpful with any questions you need answering. It was nice to return to Ilfracombe to find a good welcome.

Room Tip: We enjoyed ours being at the front of the hotel.

We got this through groupon and we're so pleased we didn't pay the full asking price of £42.50 per person b&b. it's Fawlty towers meets Phoenix nights!!! To say the hotel is dated is being kind I think it was last decorated in the 70's the early 70's that is. We woke up Saturday morning freezing, went for breakfast and the opening question from the other diners was " was you cold last night?" I'd been to get something from the car and it was warmer outside at 8 am on a February morning!!! Then came the breakfast full English it said on the menu 1 sausage I bacon 1 egg cold beans and 2 very small hollow potato wafles. I'm not saying the sausage was cheap but I would have liked some horse meat in it then at least it would have had some meat in it my wife couldn't eat hers. Needless to say we didn't go down for breakfast Sunday we ate out on our way home. The "entertainment " was something else again straight from the 70's.
on the positive the staff are friendly and helpful. It's a shame, there is so much potential it must be a viscious circle to improve they need to spend money, yet to spend money they need customers and if they don't improve the customers will stay away, and I don't blame them one little bit.

Bought a Groupon deal which gave my Girlfriend and I a two night break at this hotel. What a waste of Money! Whilst we were there, on the first night most of the hotel was full of guests to a 50th Birthday party, which was loud all night long. Upon arrival, the hotel restaraunt was exclusively reserved for the party. It was politley suggested we try the Oriental Buffet across the road if we were hungry (Don't bother by the way). The second night accommodated a wedding reception which again was loud until the early hours. Whilst this wasn't necessarily a deal breaker, it would have been nice when we phoned to book our reservation that someone told us about the events that were to take place during our stay as we felt like awkward intruders each time we walked through the hotel and around the bride and groom to get to the lift. In terms of the actual building and accommodation, to say it needs a little TLC is an under statement. The Hotel could have been considered luxury back in the 1960's and it probably hasn't been updated since. When the Customer information booklet in each room brags of a colour TV with popular channels such as BBC and ITV, you feel like you've booked a trip in a time machine. The room was clean, however the decor was very dated, the paint was peeling off of the walls and the bathroom left a lot to be desired. The hot water tap worked when it felt like it and the Shower was either Boiling hot or freezing cold. On the second night, the fire alarm went off around 11:30 at night. We quickly got dressed and made our way to reception, when we noticed a rather large amount of water coming through the ceiling during the rain. When we got to reception, the wedding was still in full swing and the hotel staff were completely stumped as to why the alarm had gone off, but decided everything was ok. We told them about the leak and showed them where it was. We were told "Oh I know it sounds strange, but it depends on which direction the wind is blowing" We were told, seemingly not worried as to how close the water was to the light switch.

All in all it was a disappointing stay. Whilst the Bed was comfortable and the room warm, the staff didn't seem to care much about the customers and the Hotel is in dire need of updating. Breakfast is served for an hour and a half in the morning and again, leaves little to be desired.
