“Worst hotel I have ever stayed in- total dump. Avoid!”
Reviewed 21 March 2013

This is the most depressing, miserable hotel I have ever stayed at in britain. It is dirty, rooms are awful, there is no feeling or warmth. Apart from a chirpy barman from michegan the staff are rude and unhelpful. The food is disgusting, you get better in a homeless shelter. This hotel is a total holiday wrecker-avoid it! Go somewhere else. Try the imperia or osbornes next door. Do not subject yourself to utter misery. It's nasty!

We have just returned from a KGB deal to the Grosvenor Hotel we stayed for two nights - the room was ok, one gripe was the shower was hand held it needs a hook on the wall to attatch it to. That said I thought it was extremely clean and decorated well for the hotel it is - an OLD VICTORIAN HOTEL . The food could have been more imaginative - and the breakfast sausages were very very cheap - and not very nice................The staff and owners were very friendly and helpful...........and I do really think that for the price we paid we had a good deal.

Thanks John and Valerie Powell 17/03/2013

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a shower

We went to this hotel on a Groupon deal and were not expecting too much as it was very cheap. The hotel is like something out of Phoenix Nights and the majority of the guests seem to be on coach trips. Staff are helpful and pleasant, the hotel was warm and breakfast satisfactory. Parking is the biggest problem as there are only 6 spaces and these seem to be taken at all times. You can only park for two hours outside the hotel so potentially you could be moving your car every couple of hours. The first room we stayed in had a leaking ceiling so this kept me awake and the second room was very small and the shower did not attach correctly. However, the room was clean and as I said before it you pay very little you really can't expect too much.

staff were very helpful; just a pity for them to have to work in this hotel. god knows how long iot had been since the carpet under the bed was cleaned and the same was true forone of the cups and one of the glasses in the room .

breakfast was ok but why bother with a menu when so much is unavailable: no kippers, no gammon, no prunes, no woman, no cry.oh no the last two are a bob marley song but you get the point. the poor waitress seemed to spend her time apologising for what were surely oversights on someone else's part; i mean, fancy not stocking up.

we got this cheap so it felt churlish to complain but don't pay full whack to stay here.

(and is letting one's dog foul the footpath obligatory in ilfracombe? haven't seen so much dog poo in years!)

Room Tip: go somewhere else!

I stayed at the Grosvenor with Just Go! Holidays in early March.
The hotel was clean and comfortable.
The owners are very friendly and accommodating.
Most of the staff are polite and helpful.
I have stayed in 3 other hotels in Ilfracombe before, in my opinion the Grosvenor is the best so far.

Went to this hotel with a Bus tour last weekend. On arrival all seemed to be Good with the Young lads taking up the cases to the rooms, on arrival at the rooms there was no heating available with radiators stone cold, heating was only on for a few hours each night. One of the guests was a heating engineer and explained to the owners what the problems were and how to fix them, needless to say we all came home sick.
When booking this trip we upgraded Rooms but the upgrade was no different from any other rooms, the TV was an old square 14" with 4 channels.
The food was adequate but the choices ran out quickly, our Sunday Breakfast never arrived and we all got up and left and bought breakfast out. There were Two Bus loads of guests with about 100 guests total there were only 4 waiters to serve us slow
Would not return to this hotel again

Booked this weekend break through Groupon and we were pleased we had not paid full price. We had read the reviews on Tripadvisor so weren't expecting great things but were hoping for the best. However, we were still disappointed and would not plan a return visit in the near future. The hotel is well placed, being only a short walk away from all amenities and the lovely harbour. However, that's about as far as it goes. The staff were very warm and welcoming and eager to please. We had a side view over next door hotel which was covered in scaffolding and in the process of being refurbished. Take note Grosvenor!!! If you aren't very mobile then you must ask for a room on the first floor as that is as far as the lift goes. Our room, which we paid extra to have an upgrade on, was on the last but top floor and we had to climb up and down 35 steps each time. The room numbering is a bit off the wall also - we got completely lost a few times. The entrance and ground floor reception rooms are ok but very dated. Our up-graded room was very ordinary and not very warm. Only one little radiator to heat the entire room (photo attached) Granted the weather was freezing, but I was cold. When we got back to the hotel one afternoon at 3.30 p.m. the heating wasn't on. I rang reception to be told it comes on about 4.00 p.m. I complained that we were freezing and it came on very quickly after that. The bed linen was sheets and blankets with a top throw (last century). All were absolutely spotless clean but the throw and one of the sheets were frayed - not nice. The breakfast was edible but you got either juice or cereal - not both as more usual - strange. The sausages were disgusting so next morning I asked for just eggs and bacon - not much can go wrong there. There was entertainment laid on each night and the DJ's made a great effort to get people engaged but most of the audience were quite elderly and not bothered. I applaud the entertainers for having a go! The hotel owners definitely need to invest seriously in upgrading and refurbishing this hotel - which could be fantastic given it's location. I would go back to Ilfracombe but not to the Grosvenor - unless big changes take place.

Room Tip: If you are not very mobile ask for a first floor room to be able to avail of the lift.
