I was bought as a birthday prescent a weekend at this hotel although it was very dated and not the best condition we laughed about that. What l did not find funny was waking up to be covered with bites which was very upsetting even though l showered straight away and washed all the clothes l took with me when a arrived home the bugs have arrived with me l am still being bitten and getting quite stressed about the whole situtation. Wish l had never gone there!

We visited this hotel regularly up to about five years ago. We revisited last week. How shabby this hotel is now! The public areas are clean as are the bedrooms but the en-suite needs a good cleaning, mould around the shower cubicle and the toilet seat which looked soiled was in fact in need of replacement. The 'restaurant' was clean and the service was pretty good. However the 'chef' needs to know that nouveau cuisine means that vegetables are crunchy NOT raw with carrots you could break teeth on and potatoes with hard centres. The breakfast was okay if you like soggy, undercooked scrambled eggs and the tinned tomatoes I had were bad and inedible! This is sad because the hotel once had a reputation for excellent meals. At night the bar staff (one man) also had to see to reception, so someone had to wait. Altogether as titled not shabby-chic, just shabby.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel!

We paid extra for a upgraded room which had wallpaper pealing off the wall and stains on the ceiling. The shower head was broken and the tv was old and broken. When asked if we could change rooms we were told there was nothing else available. We feel the staff were very unhelpful and we weren't even offered a refund. We have stayed in cheaper hotels with rooms that are a lot better. Very disappointed.

my partner and i were given a 2 night stay as a thank you gift from a friend and were looking forward to a weekend in a nice modern hotel, we were sorely disappointed, the promised hotel parking was none existant, (although we parked on the street opposite and with shrewd timing managed to do friday night - sunday morning on about £3), the hotel itself is like a time-warp, it has a grotty seaside 70's feel to it the instant you walk in and spot half a dozen pensioners sitting around looking lost in a room with a 'stage' (complete with sparkly backdrop) in the corner. we booked in and apparently there was some mix-up as we hadn't been allocated a room but were given (after some umming and ahhing) room 363, which was in the farthest, highest corner of the hotel, up seemingly endless corridors which were decorated in a style we liked to call 'bad acid trip', after which we had to scale a tiny but never-ending staircase, which for a couple of sprightly 35 year olds was mildly tiring, but to some of the hotel's more regular clientele would no doubt be at best exhausting and at worst impossible/potentially fatal. the room itself was basic, tired and under-providing for a 21st century hotel, the tv was an ancient portable with no remote, there were no glasses for drinks, (we had to go out to buy our own), there were tubs of uht milk, no-brand coffee sachets and a pot of teabags that had been there for god knows how long. the en-suite bathroom was adequate but had no lock on the door, which had to be fully closed upon vacating the room to prevent it slowly swinging open. there was a fire escape door (we think) that had no key, another door which was locked and we had no clue what was behind it. the window didn't lock, the room door and fire escape? door rattled and banged all night regardless if the window was open or not. the lights were operated half by a switch by the door (2 bulbs out) and the other switch was by the mirror on the other side of the room. the bad clothes were ancient and were tucked in in such a way as to make it almost impossible to have movement once in them. we made our way to breakfast on saturday expecting a buffet style fruit/cereal bar with cooked breakfast on waiter service, there was no fruit/cereal bar, all breakfast items had to be requested and served, my partner is vegan and had luckily brought her own none-dairy milk for coffee as the hotel has no alternative, she had toast for breakfast as again there were no vegan options, i opted for scrambled eggs on toast, i was given one musky tasting slice of toast with the worst scrambled eggs i've eaten in my life, they seemed to be reconstituted somehow. we skipped breakfast on sunday. we didn't eat dinner at the hotel, we brought in great pizzas from a place down on the way to the harbour to avoid having to watch elderly people eating and more obviously, there were no vegan options.on saturday night we returned as the entertainment was playing, (bad cover versions of obscure 50's and 60's songs with all the cheesy banter that you think of but never really think exists until you witness it 1st hand), we rang the bell 3 times to get our room key with no answer and no-one on reception so we leaned over and grabbed it ourselves (excellent security) the weekend wasn't a complete disaster, we met some nice people around ilfracombe in the tattooists, the soap store and the co-op, the town itself is a bit in need of new life and has a huge dog mess problem but the beach, cliffs and sea were great and we took a drive down to woolacombe which is much nicer and caters way better for younger people. the Grovesnor hotel though was an utter disappointment, the blurb in the room is delusional and desperate and downright innacurate in some places. we would not advise anyone under the age of 75 to go there, and we expect in a few years time it'll have closed or changed hands because it shouldn't be able to carry on giving 4th class accommodation and service like it is. for less money you can get a decent room with better facilities in a travellodge or any number of b&b's in the area. this place has misinformed delusions of grandeur and if we had payed for it ourselves we'd have a- been extremely angry, b- demanded a refund, c- gone to any other hotel in devon for better surroundings. the serving staff do the best with their lot, it can't be easy working there knowing how shabby and outdated it is. DO NOT STAY HERE, EVEN ON A GROUPON/ANY OTHER DEALS SITE. if we had to sum it up in one word - depressing.

Room Tip: go to a different hotel

Before going I was a bit apprehensive about the hotel having read some of the negative reviews on Tripadvisor. However, my fears were allayed as soon as we stepped into hotel. The hotel is clean and very welcoming. The staff, especially the restaurant staff, were very polite and the service was very good. Breakfast was not five star but adequate.

All in all it was a very good for a hotel in that price range. It's definately not 5* but you do not expect it to be for that price. For all those moaners who expect 5* service but do not want to pay for it, my advise go somewhere else and pay the price.

I am in the hospitality industry and I know how hard it is to run a business these days, where profits margins are next to nothing and where you are constantly having to give things away just to survive. But the expectancy from the public is sky high.

I have nothing but admiration for the management who are doing a very tough. Just think if it was not for hard work that these people do where would we go on holiday.

This hotel was very welcoming. The staff were excellent. Rooms very clean and tidy.
Not too much choice for evening meal but good enough for us! Given tea or coffee on
arrival so that was nice.Good entertainment most nights. Would definately go again.

Had last weekend away via dealcloud. Booking was easy and having upgraded we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find we had the Capstone Suite, a nice big room with a large bay window with lovely white net curtains and good quality curtains. Lovely and clean room, warm and cosy with a nice suite of furniture and a comfy bed with sheets and blankets, a bit of a novelty these days but not at all unacceptable; bathroom was brand new with a large walk-in shower, what a treat! A lift right outside the door was a great boon.

The dining room was very well laid out. Matching tables and chairs with pristine table cloths. The food was well cooked and served, and tasted good too.

All the staff were very welcoming, friendly and most helpful.

Would recommend this hotel and would like to return when the sun is shining and the evenings are long.
