“Small but worth a detour”

Upton Castle Gardens
Ranked #23 of 43 things to do in Tenby

Attraction details
Owner description: Upton Castle is picturesque and charming Norman Castle which remains a private family home. The garden consists of 35 acres of listed historic gardens, surrounded by ancient woodland. There are spectacular herbaceous borders, a delightful formal rose garden and a fascinating, traditional 19th century walled garden. Rare trees and shrubs abound throughout the gardens and include a stunning collection of rhododendrons, tree Magnolias and Camellias. The medieval chapel contains ornately carved stone tombs of crusader knights. Enjoy woodland walks bursting with wild flowers leading to the shores of Upton Creek, part of the tidal Cleddau estuary. There are plenty of places along the paths to sit and soak up the tranquillity of the unique surroundings and enjoy a picnic. If you are lucky, you may even see an otter!

“Small but worth a detour”

We weren't sure if the garden would be open or not as the leaflet we had and the website contradicted each other. We came anyway and glad we made the effort. It doesn't take long to walk around the gardens, but the walk back through the woodland is peaceful and there is a lot of information about the wildlife.

“Lovely afternoon”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

I haven't been here for several years. It is no longer sign posted on the main road and I wondered if it was still open. There was no one in attendance on the gate so although there is a fee to go inn it is collected via a trust box where you place your entrance fee. By the sound of the money hitting the bottom of the box I guess some people are not trust worthy, as there were other visitors there but the box sounded empty!! Perhaps it had just been emptied. The place has been invested in and expanded since my last visit. There are several lovely walks there and the plants were beautiful. The rose garden and lavender plants were in full bloom and were covered in bees and butterflies, as was the meadow area. There is a vegetable area there - full of lovely veg and flower plants and the fruit trees were laden with a variety of fruits. Fruit and veg are also sold there to the public (also by means of the trust box) and today there fresh figs for sale. All of the fruit and veg is organic. The family chapel is a place of tranquility and peace and provides the history of the family. I will certainly be visiting again and would recommend this to anyone who enjoys gardens. Lovely to see the investment and improvements into the place. Incidentally, there was sign there asking for volunteers to man the kiosk on the entrance or to help with the gardening side of things if anyone is interested!!!

There are brown leisure signs to the gardens on the A477 directing traffic headed west only, due to council restrictions! We also have signs from the village of Cosheston. Perhaps you came a different way? Thank you for your review we are glad you enjoyed your visit and look forward to seeing you again soon.

“A peaceful and refreshing bank holiday”

We walked through these lovely gardens, through the forest walk and to the view across the tidal creek. Then back through the walled garden, the small chapel and rose garden into the arboretum. What a lovely walk.

“Lovely gardens”

Very interesting listed garden. No-one in 'hut' at entrance, an honesty box in place which we noticed not everyone used! Beautiful Medieval Chapel on site.

Thank you very much for your review of our garden. Although most people are honest, we are aware that there are some unscrupulous people who do not pay to visit our garden. We empty the honesty box regularly throughout the day and talk to most of the visitors personally. We can usually tell those who have not bothered to pay! We hope to see you in the gardens again soon.

“Small but worthwhile gardens”

Less polished than some of the bigger names, but probably the better for it. Mostly consists of woodland paths that are well laid out and take you right down to the Carew river. Good fill in for a couple of hours.
