“Not impressed at all depressing place!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 September 2013 via mobile

On arrival my heart dropped even from the outside this hotel is in serious need of a refurb..then you walk in threw the door and your met with the darkest dreariest tearoom iv ever been in with throwback to the 70s crazy patterned carpet threw out the entire hotel,to the dark wood scruffy furniture its awful.

The gentleman on reception was so unwelcoming and hardly spoke a word...we were shown to our room by the landlady owner who was quite pleasant and chatty.
our room was on the top floor which is a long way up and tiring u need a oxygen mask.. would not suit the elderly at all.

The family room we stayed in was not good small bathroom with sloping attic roof difficult for hubby to pee without hitting his head of which I did while in the shower.
this is 2 rooms in 1.. 2 singles in one room with a huge old dark wardrobe leaning at an awkward angle against the wall, looks like all the furniture is from a second hand shop...then the other part of the room has a double bed a small single window with sea view which is completely ruined by the amount of pigeons and pigeon poo everywhere outside the window gross spoilt the view completely.
was worried as no fire escape too!
totally overpriced for the state of place!
So as you can gather this hotel is not my cup of tea so save yr money and go elsewhere. I reserve the right to my opinion!!!!!

Sorry, but on the whole a rather innaccurate review. Firstly the accurate part, yes the exterior needs refurbishing, given our sea front location the building takes a battering from the elements and needs repainting every three years, this will be done this winter. Your opinion of the tea rooms aren't widely held, the carpet is a traditional, conservatively coloured, patterned axminster, you make it out to be loud and garish which certainly it is not.The furniture is on the whole in very good condition and is keeping with the style and age of the building and period features within.
Your room was on the third floor, if you book online it was clealy marked as a high floor family room without a lift, book direct with us and the room's location is always emphasised, hence we don't get elderly people staying in those rooms, not sure why you reserved this room if you have a problem with stairs!.
Given our location birds do land on the exterior from time to time, and yes, they do what birds do. We have now taken steps to reduce this.
We are in the middle of a refurbishment programme , 6 of 14 rooms having had new carpet, curtains and soft furnishings. This winter we will refurb a similar number of rooms, including the room you were in.
With reference to no fire escape, we have automatic fire detectors in all rooms and corridors (there were two in your room) Along with the fire doors protecting all means of escape, the local fire authority do not require us to have a fire escape in that area. I trust their expertise in fire safety, maybe you should too, as to suggest otherwise is potentially libellous.

On leaving our last hotel in tenby (IT WAS BOOKED FOR US) and had having an awful night. We decided to look for a miracle at the last moment and hence The esplanade came to our rescue. We asked for any family accomodation going and found ourselves in the apartment next door. Wow it was fantastic. There was a four poster, sumptious bed setee for our daughter and a spa bath. We could not have been happier and theway that The Esplanade went out of our way was great. Idont know about you but it is still nice to see service is great.

Room Tip: The apartment on the front is great value at £100.00 a night and the view is nothing short of great.

An "average" mark would be too little, "very good" is probably too much. I would say this is a good hotel but certainly has some room for improvement. The positives are the location, which is right on the front overlooking the sea. The owners and staff are extremely friendly and will do their best to help you out. The breakfast is very nice too.

The room we stayed in was fairly spacious but there were some issues. Firstly, we had a top floor room which meant that it was difficult to walk around in the bathroom area due to the dimensions with the roof. The shower was quite tricky for the same reason unless you are small. Also, the pigeons would wake you up quite early, as they were right by the windows at the front which were not double glazed. This may sound minor but they really were very noisy! Finally, you could not get wifi up there, so we had to use it in the breakfast area or half way up the stairs. All these issues could be solely due to being at the top so may not be a problem in some of the other rooms. Saying that, being at the top gave us some wonderful views from the window overlooking the sea.

Room Tip: Try not to have a top floor room

Thank you for your review. We`re glad you enjoyed our breakfasts, we pride ourselves on sourcing locally, and cooking to order.
With reference to your room, yes it is in the eaves which isn`t ideal if your very tall. We have decided to change the layout of the bathroom, to a walk in shower, hopefully this will be done this winter, we will also be replacing carpet and furniture in that room.
The pigeons have been an issue this year, so we have bought some deterrants to stop them disturbing our guests. These will be in place after the outside gets painted.
We do have 3 other family rooms two of which have sea views, slightly set back on the wing with balconies. These are big open plan rooms with sitiing area looking out to sea. The other is on the ground floor but doesn`t have a sea view or sitting(sofa) area.
We look forward to welcoming you another time.

I stayed in the single room on the third floor, very clean and comfortable, magnificent views. To wake and see the sea was lovely at the start of the day and to see the moon on the sea at the end was lovely. Amazing view of Caldey Island, a beautiful place to visit, very tranquil. Breakfast was very good, cooked beautifully and lovely waiting staff. Peter and Julie the owners were always on hand to help if required. A super hotel in a fantastic location. I will definitely book again.

Room Tip: Book a sea view , it is well worth it.

Plus- The staff were helpful and location

Negative- Double room too small, wi-fi is not always available, Not a four star in my opinion

If you are after the sea view, then the beach is very beautiful and its just outside the hotel

Room Tip: By looking through the pictures, may be the rooms with sea view are bigger and may be more comfortab...

Thank you for your review. I`m sorry that you can only rate us as average. Yes, the sea views are larger, usually aprroximately £5.00 per person more than the non seaviews. Although we also have our premier four poster rooms with spa baths and amazing panoramic sea views, or the family/ twin rooms with sitting area and balconies looking out to sea(slightly set back). If you decide to stay with us again, it`s always best to book direct, so that we can cater best to your needs, and also get the best rates, especially through the winter.
Kind Regards

We stopped in room 17 for one night. The room is for a family but there were only two of us and it was spacious with 2 beds, sofa and ensuite. We had a view of the town wall from one window and a sea view from the balcony window. Everything was clean and worked as it should. Breakfast was excellent with a choice of cereal and fruit, toast and then a choice of hot options cooked fresh. The sausgae and bacon were good quality and waiting staff were really friendly especially the older of the two. We would certainly book again.
