Riverside Holiday Park
Reviewed 14 October 2011

Okay, so we stayed at Riverside Caravan Park and i have to say the Caravan was very nice, spacious and very cosy, but, the promises we had online such as facilities , entertainment and things to do e.t.c , it did not deliver, chippy said to be open till 9:00pm , so we thought , yeah , we'll treat ourselves to some fish'n'chips , but we couldn't find it , so we asked reception , and she looked at us puzzled, and said that the cafe was the only thing they had, which wasn't even open. The bars had a ''STRICTLY NO CHILDREN'' sign on every door , so its no good if the adults in the group want a few drinks, knowing that the children can't go in, and it was quite empty in there! There was no entertainment. The arcade , nothing seemed to work , and my little brother wanted to go on the driving-games with me, so i put the pund coin in the slot, and inside, you could see a row of coins jamming the entrance of the slot and you could'nt get it back, 2p machines were off , the major prize in one of them was a key-ring, and the music seemed a bit annoying. Have to say , overall , i enjoyed as we were a family of 8 , and we all had a lovely time in these beautiful caravans, and i mean beautiful , also the Southport Town Centre was about 4-5 miles away , and blackpool wasnt that far either , if i had to choose , no i don't think i would go back.

Stayed at this campsite several times over the years on the large tent fields out of school hols and found the site to be really good and toilet/shower blocks clean and well looked after and also no noise after midnight so was taken aback when i booked a hook up tent pitch to join my daughter and her family at the start of school hols end of July this year, think some schools finish earlier than others so the first couple of days/nights (Weds/Thurs) were ok although quite full on the site and being on the hook up side of the campsite we were amonst the caravans and motorhomes so felt bit crowded.

Friday came and all hell broke loose with even more people cramed onto the site and no room to move an inch, i like to have a laff with the best of um and i do take a good supply of beers to enjoy but to be still being kept awake by kids shouting and screaming on the near by play ground at gone 2am and their unrulely parents totally oblivious to it all and drinking/shouting and slamming car doors till even later on then next 2 nights was no joke.

The whole place went to pot, the shower/toilet block were disgusting to put it mildly although this wasn't the fault of the campsite it was the dirty uncouth people that used them and to my horror had the nerve to complain about the condition of them while throwing their used tins of beer next to the next persons tent.

I spent most of the time away from the campsite and drended going back and wished i'd never set foot in the place, needless to say we cut our stay short and when asked why at reception i told them that the campsite was an unrulely shambles and got the reply why didn't i call for the security so they could ask the people being noisey to be quite, my responce was that if one or two security men could contain what must have been over a thousand yobby people hell bent on getting drunk and behaving like morons they have to be superman's double and to be honest the mood on the campsite was very riotous and id have felt for their safety.

As i said ive been there before and had no problems and i was the one that told my daughter to book this site, im sorry i did now and would never return again, the campsite owners must take some responcibillity for overcrowding and not employing more security or should i say Royal Marines to keep the low life as low as they possibly could, but money is the king and they would have been rolling in it but im sure alot of the decent people like me and my family will not return so in the long run it's a bad policy putting pounds before peoples enjoyment and dare i say safety.

Stayed here for a weekend with friends ,the caravan was very nice,a new 6berth one and it was clean as was the site.We were out of season so difficult to comment on many things but we found it to be in a fairly good location with a bus stopping on site and about 20mins from Southport centre.Food was pretty good at the on site cafe and reasonably priced. The bars could do with a revamp and the girl running the kids club was not at all friendly to the kids,we often heard her shouting at them ( over the microphone too) at the mini disco and she had no time for them at all!!!
Would go back as we found Southport to be nice but probably not in peak season.

I wouldn't go back to this site again - being woken by a rooster every morning at 4am is no joke, especially with children. The first night we laughed, but then we realised the rooster/hen were allowed to roam free throughout the site.
The toilets are too far away - there were 2 on our field. The showers were filthy and you had to keep pressing the button otherwise the shower switched off after 20 seconds! The bar is not big enough for the amount of people on the site - you had to arrive around 7pm to ensure you got a seat and they only had 2 members of staff serving.
Ours teens wanted chips at night (as they do!) but the chippy had shut at 9pm! plus there is nothing for teens to do - thank god we took a portable dvd player!
All in all, not a pleasant experience and I would not come back here again. Certainly not worth the money we paid.

We booked this site for a 9 night stay over the August bank holiday weekend. We chose this site because we had stayed at another Harrison Leisure site previously and found that one to be of a good standard.

A few days before we arrived I telephoned to ask something about the pitch we had been allocated. The young girl I spoke to was absolutely no help whatsoever so my husband called them back a few minutes later and spoke to a different young girl. She was equally unhelpful so we gave up.

When we arrived on site with our caravan we got to meet the lovely young things we had spoken to on the phone and they were just as we expected them to be. Uninterested, surly, miserable and just not what you want to greet you when you are arriving for a break away with the family.

Anyway, we found our pitch and set up our awning with the help of some lovely people who were already pitched behind us (caravanners are fantastic people). The site was absolutely packed and felt very crowded indeed but this was to be expected for a bank holiday weekend. The area around the playground and the main toilet block was teeming with kids so we were very glad that our pitch was in a fairly quiet location.

The toilet blocks were all dirty. Many of the toilets had no locks, the wash basins were dirty, the floors were dirty and always littered with squares of toilet paper. The toilets in the main shower block seemed to be the worst and the showers were the worst I have experienced on a campsite. There were 8 showers in total on the site for what seemed to be 5000 people so always a queue. The blocks all had signs on them saying what time they would be closed for cleaning but even if you went 10 minutes after they had supposedly been cleaned they were still filthy.

The kitchen tap in our caravan broke on the first day so we had to use the dishwashing facilities which were appalling. The water was just lukewarm and there was always food debris and grease in the sink and on the draining board that had to be cleaned before you could start washing your own dishes. This is mainly down to inconsiderate campers who don’t clean up after themselves.

The elsan point at the main wash block was a disgrace. Always completely awash with sewage and no hose pipe to swill down or to fill your chemical toilet.

The rubbish skips by the main toilet block were full to the brim at all times of the day. I don’t know when they were emptied but they always seemed to be overflowing whether you went first thing in the morning, during the day or last thing at night.

When we arrived we were given a leaflet for the kids’ club activities (Riverside Rascals) and I took my daughter one afternoon to join in the treasure hunt. It was pitiful. The girl on the greeting desk could hardly look up from her Take A Break, the room was full of broken toys, litter on the floor, grubby soft toys, colouring pencils with no points on them, a little portable TV in the corner plugged into an extension lead that was trailing on the carpet just ready for someone to fall over it. The same surly girls from reception seemed to be running the kids club too (either that or they just all looked the same). I stayed for a little while to make sure my daughter was settled and I didn’t see any of the entertainment staff crack a smile once and their interaction with the children was dreadful. Needless to say my daughter didn’t want to go again after that visit.

The arcade had a few penny slot machines but most of the slots were blocked up with 2 pences that were stuck. There were a couple of pool tables in the arcade but no cues. We popped our heads in the Lounge Bar (adults only) and it reminded us of the dive bars that we don’t go in at home because they are always sticky and grubby. The Family Entertainment room was woefully inadequate the one time we visited. Standing room only, a queue a mile long at the bar with just one person serving, a children’s magician using inappropriate adult innuendo. It was a quick about turn for us and back to the caravan for an early night.

The last thing I am going to say about this site is not really the site’s fault but it needs to be said. Putting it politely some of the clientele left a lot to be desired. Putting it bluntly I felt like I was surrounded by guests of the Jeremy Kyle Show. Despite dangerous dog breeds supposedly not being allowed it seemed as though the pitbull terrier with studded harness was the must have accessory on this site and everywhere you turned there was someone using the F word.

Obviously I will not return to this site again and I will never use another Harrison Leisure site again despite being satisfied with their site at Royal Umpire at Croston. I think they are treating their customers with contempt by providing such sub standard facilities and they don’t deserve my custom.

Room Tip: Ask for a pitch as far from the playground as possible

Our party consisted of two family units, four adults and three children in total. We stayed over the bank holiday weekend (August 2011) so this may be relevant to our experience as it was perhaps more busy than usual. In brief, it was awful!

The campsite does not have pitches marked out and it was so busy that it just looked like a field of festival tents. Fellow campers displayed undesirable behaviour by drinking and fighting, leaving litter, allowing their children to roam like ferrel animals without supervision and playing loud music from their cars.

We found one shower/toilet block and another block of toilets only. The showers were filthy, so much so we didn't use them during our three night stay. On the second night the toilets were out of order in the toilet block and there was no running water to wash hands. This made it quite a trek to the other toilet block.

We paid a brief visit to the children's entertainment in the evening - it was awful, both the entertainment and atmosphere.

On that same night we also went to the amusement arcade to find that none of the change machines were working so we couldn't use any of the machines, much to the children's disappointment.

To be fair, we weren't disturbed by noise from other campers too late at night.

The campsite's facilities aren't dire but the experience was exacerbated by many of the other campers. Jeremy Kyle's studio must have been sparse that weekend!

It's quite well located for visiting local attractions, but we won't be going again.

We stayed 3 nights in late July 2011 as two families of 4 adults and 3 kids in total, on grass camping pitches with electric hook up. The reception staff were friendly & helpful upon check in, we wre directed to our pitches and given keys to the toilets/showers and a barrier pass. There is a £20 per key deposit which is refunded on departure. The pitches are a good size, but are very close together and when the site is busy there is a matter of inches between you and your neighbours. Rules are there for eveyones benefit, but they are not enforced and this leads to people falling out and being angry and frustrated. For example, there was a commercial, sign-written van a few pitches away from us which is supposedly not allowed. This I can live with, but the other rules SHOULD be enforced. Kids and young teens were running around unaccompanied making a LOT of noise until after 1am every night. This is very frustrating when parents let them annoy other campers and the site do nothing to police the situation. We also had groups of kids playing football between tents and cars when there simply isn't room and a field is available for this. I appreciate this should be down to the parents more than the site, but there are many inconsiderate, ignorant parents around and the site should make some effot to enforce the rules that are really needed i.e noise and nuisance. They also have cockerels on-site which are allowed to run loose, so if you get a late night, you will still have an early morning. Rampant kids until 1am, then a dawn chorus of cockerels at 5 am doesn't allow a good nights sleep. Surely a quiet time from 11pm could be put into place and enforced as on other sites to give everyone a chance to sleep.
The family bar was a nice area but the service was very poor. Friday night saw one member of staff trying to serve everyone. She adopted a formal queue system to keep it fair, but this resulted in up to 40 mins wait to get served.
On Saturday there was a Michael Jackson tribute act advertised for 8pm. We arrived at 7pm but there were already no seats left. Not a problem, but the act then didn't start until 9:30pm, by which time kids were bored and hot and being a handful. There were well over 200 people in there and there were just 2 bar staff. Again 40 mins plus for a drink. The sound system failed and the act was poor, so we left before the end, as did many others. The Cafe is nice and the food of a good standard, but again, service is questionable. We ordered at 7:30pm to be told there was nothing but chips available as they shut at 8pm. I pointed out it was only half seven to be told they shut at 8 so it's chips or nothing. At 7:50 the place was deserted of any staff so maybe we picked a night when the staff had other places to be, but if you stop cooking at 7:30pm, don't advertise that food is served until 8pm ?
Toilet blocks were in a shocking state, allegedly cleaned daily, but to a very poor standard. Showers were okay but locks missing from doors, and filthy sinks too. Not great.
Over all, a good location for getting out to Southort and surrounding areas, but I would only go back to this particular site as a last resort and would try to find somewhere else in the surrounding area first.
Maybe it was just because it was such a busy time, but we were left feeling somewhat let down by what could, and should be a great camp site.
