“OH DEAR!!!!”
Reviewed 20 July 2012

This is a victorian hotel and the age reflects in the decor , could do with a spot of renovating,.

My partner paid the extra at the time of booking for an uprade , the room was spacious but not 100% clean , tea / coffee up the connecting door, wallpaper ripped in places , sofa had dirty marks /stains. now the view from our room 330 all i can say is i would keep the curtains shut as all you could see was the back yards of shops, pizza place , which was filthy looking, not a nice view at all.
However we thought we would stick it out as we were only booked in for 2 nights , about 11 pm i could here voices, it was a couple in the adjoining room , could hear everything they were saying, it was like they were in the room with us , this went on up untill 1am which woke my partner and he went down to reception to complain , not only was this couple loud but they were also smoking in their room which i could smell .

We were given another room 126 and moved straight away so we could get some sleep, we were upgraded yet again! , room was lovely and it was huge , same view from window though :( and yet again another connecting door !.

We came to our second night looking forward to a nice peaceful nights sleep and low and behold about 11 pm some guys came in to the connecting room and although they wasn't being rowdy we could hear all their golf conversation and their yawning etc , i had difficulty getting to sleep and then at 3am i heard this loud snoring, it wasn't my partner but the guys in the adjoining room , it was like the snoring was coming from the wardrobe .
I think you would be better not having an upgrade . something should really be done about these adjoing rooms .

The food was OK ish, toast was almost wafer thin , i didn't think there was much choice .

Staff were very friendly , the hotel is very well situated as in close to all good shops, bars and places to eat, about 10 mins walk to the pier

In the offer we booked we had , box of chocolate, bottle of wine and bowl of mouldy fruit on a arrival in our room

I would only stay here again if i had a front facing room that never had an adjoing room .

There are 5 reasons for my complaint which I will now list below:

1. On arrival as newly weds my husband and I were informed that the car park was full and we were then asked to park in the surrounding area. We did this, checked in and promptly took our luggage to our suite (room 202). We looked at the view which over looked the car park, to which we saw 3 empty car park spaces on site. We approached the receptionist who checked to make sure what we had told her was true? Upon her return she agreed to lift the barrier. The sign however stayed firmly in place???

2. After a long journey to your hotel we looked at the 24hr food service menu. We chose a Chicken & Brie Melt and a Bacon & Brie Melt. We were informed that hot food was not being served and could we choose a cold sandwich. We decided to choose 2 York Ham sandwiches. Upon ordering we were asked if we like chips with that? Are chips not hot food?

3. The ladies toilets in the lobby were dirty and, after checking the cleaning timetable on the back of the entrance door, they had not been cleaned all day. The time at this point was 16:30 hrs. Do you not have cleaning staff on a Saturday?

4. The bedroom was very spacious which dealt with my needs as a disabled person. However transferring to the sofa was painful for both my husband (able bodied) and myself (disabled) as a solid beam caused excruciating pain to the back of the legs once seated. The bed was also uncomfortable and we did not expect such poor quality for a room that was not a standard room.

5. We were informed dinner was a carvery. To start we decided to have soup. With soup it is natural to have bread. We sat down and began to eat, I tore a piece of my bread and then happened to turn over my piece of bread only to find MOULD! I informed the waitress of the mouldy bread she promptly removed the bread from my table but I received no apology for this obvious negligence from the kitchen staff. We decided to leave the soup and try the carvery. Having attended the food area early we expected to see plenty of nice succulent fresh meat waiting to be carved. We found a large tray with two small portions of meat that looked like it had been left over from the previous day and reheated. I know what fresh meat looks like and it doesn't look old and crusty.

All in all, after all these disgusting errors made by the hotel, we did not stay the night as the thought of breakfast was unbearable. We wouldn't let a dog stay here.

Having read some reports of this hotel we were a bit dubious, but we had lovely large rooms, perhaps a bit on the dark side, but very warm and comfortable. Own TV, tea/coffee tray, trouser press, hairdryer and toiletries. Unfortunately there was only one lift operating and this proved to be a slight problem as we were on 3rd floor. Meals were all very good, plenty of choice, but with 3 or 4 coach parties in at one time the staff were kept really busy. The staff were all polite and helpful - nothing was too much trouble! Hotel has one of the best situations in Southport, very convenient to shops, walks etc. Would certainly stay there again.

visited this hotel in march and found the hotel in an excellent position right on the main street, we upgraded our room and had a very large room no 100 it was clean and comfortable the staff were friendly and the dining room very smart its a pity the food did not match up to it, the food its self was just ok selection was poor and tended to be similar most days meat and veg i do not think they have heard of beef, they were very slow filling up and nobody cleaning up after people had made a mess helping themselves they needed the manager constantly walking around keeping the staff on there toes not siting by the door checking quests in. all in all good value for the money.

Room Tip: do not ask for tea or coffe mid afternoon £3.50 per person.

I've stayed at this hotel before with National Holidays and have no complaints at all. Yes, it's dated and could do with some refurbishment, but what do people expect with an original Victorian hotel? Our room was quite big; lovely big bathroom, with a bath, which most modern hotels don't have, plenty of towels. Only one window opened, but when you're on the second floor you don't want to risk anyone falling out! The food was excellent and plenty of it, and there was entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights. The hotel was very busy with a convention, a wedding, and even a wake, so as another reviewer put it, they must be doing something right. The hotel is ideally placed for all the shops and it's only a ten minute walk to the sea front where there all loads of attractions. I would certainly visit this hotel again.

Room Tip: We stayed in room 200 which is at the front of the hotel so there was some noise from the road, but...
