This hotel has been a grand one in its day. There are still features that remain but some of them really need to be refurbished. That said, we all know once work is done to return this grand hotel back to its original splendour the cost would have to increase.
We booked B&B for two nights staying with four good friends. Our room was a large one above the entrance, room 100. It was fine for what we paid. All facilities, large bathroom, king size bed , crisp white bed linen. Needed to open the window as very warm, fine when radiator turned off.
There are some things that would have to be noted if we were paying 5 star prices, but we weren't.
There are plenty of good restaurants nearby to eat in the evening and very pleasant to walk out along Lord Street.
Breakfast was fine, orange and grapefruit slices, peach slices, prunes and porridge. Plenty of plain or fruit yoghurt. Croissants, toast, jams. Cooked breakfast for those who wanted more, I was told it was a good one, plenty of choice as well as boiled eggs too. A bit busy but that's how it is with buffet service, it was fine.
Location is perfect for shops and seafront.

We have just enjoyed an overnight stay with a KGB voucher for D,B&B, wine and chocolates. The room was on the third floor but it was an executive twin so larger than most, with a large bathroom with big bath. All the rooms in the hotel were very clean and the food was excellent, hot, fresh and and there was a good choice for dinner and breakfast. The reception advised us to visit the dining room early as the hotel was full with coaches this was a good advise.
Yes, the hotel was tired but you get what you pay for and to be on the main street with parking was a bonus.

Room Tip: Room 334 was very quiet and of a good size but needs modernizing.

We bought this stay with a cheep internet Voucher Deal and we expected the stay to reflect this. However we were pleasantly suppressed. Ok they did give us a room that required hiking boots or a taxi to get too....that's why it was a voucher room . However once we eventually did arrive at the room, we found it to be very pleasant, chocs and a bottle of wine on the writing desk as promised. Nicely decorated. Clean but very narrow en-suite.
My slight complaint would be the low pitched hum as if from a generator that went on all night. Not very loud but there in the background all the same.
The rest of the hotel is bit of a Jeckyl and Hyde. Down stairs is very well appointed and looks quite regal, but the further away from reception find paint peeling or large bubbles / water damage just about every where in the corridors. Not enough to put you off but most certainly in need of some very close attention.#
The buffet food was fine, but as the hotel take large coach parties, finding a table was a challenge in its self.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and definitely had value for money.

Room Tip: Make sure your not put in a room on the dark side of the moon ie if you don't like a long hike a...

Stayed on a Friday night Break was very dissapointed. We asked for a disabled room which was fine but cold and no one in the Hotel could get the radiator to work.A nice brick ramp had been built for the disabled, but when you went into the dining room down to the buffet there were 2 sets of steps ! Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Poor standard of food also.

We stayed at this hotel on a KGB deal as the reviews said 'great, value for money, food excellent'. Unfortunately, I can only assume they ate out!!!!! This is an old hotel, looking tired & in need of a little updating but it is clean both in the public areas and the rooms. This hotel caters for coach parties and if you're looking for a hotel with hostel like facilities this is for you. The food was dreadful, the buffet meal couldn't even be described as a carvery! The main course consisted of 1 meat (ham), cold, hard roast potatoes and MUSHY PEAS & RED CABBAGE as the veg options. The meal (if that's what it can be called) was tasteless and cold. On a plus the hotel bar didn't over charge on the beer. Now for breakfast, nightmare!!! There was a wait at the peak time which was acceptable but the organisation (or lack of it) was such that people that had been waiting for less time got a table first.... now how does that work!!!! The tables were dirty when you were allocated one and only got cleared/cleaned upon request. The staff are rushed off their feet, clearly insufficient cover for so many guests therefore making the service appalling but is it really their fault.......no, hotel management are to blame! All in all the food here represents a school canteen, nothing more!

Will we stay here again.........NEVER!!!! We may have stayed on a deal but still felt like we'd been DONE!!!!!

The Hotel was of the older style, high ceilings sweeping stairways. We were made to feel very welcome when we checked in and our rooms were ready when we arrived, even though we were slightly early. Room very clean had all facilities mentioned in description. Could do with some T.L.C. on the paintwork. We were on a deal break breakfast and evening meal, both of which were really good. There was plenty choice from both meals. The bar prices were reasonable too. Overall would visit this hotel again, ideal for shopping, eating out and the sea front.

Room Tip: Higher floors are quieter.

I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions & have always found it to be excellent value for money & the staff are most helpful. I have stayed here for 2 or 3 nights at a time with a Coach company it has always been less than £100 for dinner, bed & full English breakfast the evening meal is a carvery & is excellent value for money. The hotel is situated right in the centre on Lord Street & has its own car park. I wiuld recommend this hotel to couples & families.

Room Tip: If you want an old fashioned hotel with old fashioned values then this is the hotel for you
