“lovely weekend”
Reviewed 8 July 2014

Ibooked us into this hotel on a special deal which was dinner, bed and breakfast for 2 at the cost of £84. The meal was very good for the money, and plenty of it. We had a downstairs room that was spotlessly clean and had a spa bath. There was entertainment in the evening, it consisted of a quiz and then music and dancing. It was a lovely weekend with very friendly staff and great value for money. No complaints at all. We plan to go back.

Although this grand hotel is a bit tired it has character and I liked it.
The staff were all pleasant and we were served drinks into the early hours with no hassle.
It has a great location on Lord Street and I would stay there again for the price.

I spent four nights, as one of a group, at this hotel in May. As a single, I am used to being allocated one of the least attractive rooms and, on learning that my room was on the lower floor, at the back of the hotel, and having read unfavourable reviews that mentioned damp, smells and windows looking out on to a wall, I did not have high expectations. However, the large, fully-equipped, twin room had obviously been refurbished recently with freshly-painted white walls and ceiling; warm gold-coloured fitted carpet; all-white bedding; unobjectionable curtains and NO fussy, un-necessary extras such as cushions and bed toppers. Both large windows opened on to a weeded area (roughly about 3 - 4 feet above the floor level of the room) which, veiled by the voile curtains, appeared pleasantly green - when the Buddleia, immediately outside, is in flower, it will look quite colourful. It was not particularly dark and it was certainly quiet. The bulky television set worked - but there were few channels available, about 5 were showing the same football match. The large bathroom was shining and the grouting around the spa bath appeared fresh, with no signs of mould. The usual toiletries were supplied. Everything was kept clean throughout my stay. The dining-room was something else entirely - evidently under-staffed as tables were not cleared promptly and service ranged from a warm smile (once) to indifference. No real unpleasantness but, although I was twice asked if I wanted tea or coffee for breakfast and water was brought on request, meals were, essentially, self-service. The breakfast bacon, egg and (rather heavy) warm croissants and Danish pastries were acceptable but, mostly, the food was truly awful: over-processed, over-cooked and kept warm for far too long on the buffet - fine if one enjoys heavily processed food, or one's taste buds are atrophied, and one just requires a heaped plateful of whatever is on offer (details chalked on the board) as there was a good variety of both hot and cold dishes every evening. After-dinner coffee (instant) - or tea - were D.I.Y. in the lounge. There is only one lift - and it only holds four people at a time - so there were long waits at mealtimes and when a group was arriving or leaving. I cannot comment on the bar, lounge or quality of the entertainment provided.

we visited this once lovely hotel last week We have been staying at the Prince of Wales twice a year for many years & every time we visit are hoping that the Britannia company have pulled there socks up & made some improvements but sadly yet again we have been disappointed so we think that it will be probably be our last stay there The company only seems intrested in the coach trade & no thought at all for the individual vistors The staff are all glum & unhelpful ( apart from one young girl on reception who had only started there last week ) I really dont think that we will be returning here How very sad as it was always one of the highlights of our year

You guessed it by the title. I would not stay at this hotel again.
The hotel is big, old and in serious need of some renovation. There is paint peeling almost everywhere. The windows were filthy , there was black mould around the bath and the shower head was broken.
However the bedding was clean and the bed was ok.
Breakfast was passable, although they do advertise fresh fruit that was actually tinned. You are left to your own devices, and have yo chase the staff for tea or coffee.
There is internet - but only in reception.
The staff at the reception were ok, some were undergoing some training, and were new to customer demands.
The hotel was pretty much full - mainly a coach party stop. And mainly pensioner age. This would be a good stop for this type of clientele.
There is a car park - but you have to pay to use it.

This is an old hotel in need of refurbishment.

Possibly due to the size of the hotel it's clearly understaffed and the ones they do have are poorly trained.

The breakfast was average at best if you accept the fact you are basically ignored.

I wouldn't return given the option but I'm sure they will be kept busy by the non stop flood of 70+ year old that were there. Avoid this place if you're not a pensioner!

Room 133 ...avoid!,, smelly corridor, hot room with only a partial window that has a coating so you cannot see out. Sticky carpet, dirty cup was left in the room where the milk carton was stuck to the saucer! Very worn out mattress. There must have been a leak at some point and marks still on ceiling and carpets. Only 81 car parking apces 140ish rooms and they allow non residents to park there too!! Definately wouldnt stay again very disappointing
