Excellent position on Lord Street.
A lovely Victorian building with lots of character (a lovely coal fire roaring in the foyer during the winter months). There are plenty of comfortable chairs and a calm ambience, suited to reading or quiet conversation. The ballroom is a wonderful room with domed glass ceiling.
The bedrooms are a reasonable size, but a little tired. They really do need to be brought into the 21st century.
The dining room is hot, the tables quite small for 4 and the staff are rushed off their feet. The buffet is a little chaotic as the food is not in a logical order. The food is average.
The reception staff were polite and helpful.

We Stayed here for one night on 2/08/2014. Check -in was easy and girl on reception was friendly, she let us check-in even though we were early. The room was big and clean with nice big clean bathroom. The tv was a small old style portable, the bed was a double, but seemed small compared to other hotels but was comfortable. We included the breakfast buffet in the cost of the room for an extra £10 for two, this was good value as there is a good selection of items with good bacon and cereals. The hotel has some really nice old features but could do with an upgrade. Overall it is a good value hotel for a few days stay and very well located for the shops, bars and seafront. We found a nice Chinese Restaurant just round the corner on the road towards the seafront, food was good and reasonable prices. There is also a nice little Irish bar down one of the side streets of the same road. We would stay here again on our next visit to Southport.

Ran out of single rooms so was put in a double 'standard' room. Room reasonably clean but looked a bit neglected, the only seating was a very uncomfortable sofa bed. No bath mat in en suite, had to use hand towel.
Food was average and staff rushed off their feet as they were short staffed.
Customer lift broke down on first day and still wasn't repaired when we left four days later. Service lift was overworked. Wifi was advertised but that too broke down and wasn't available until the last night when we had to sit in the corridor to get access. Overall not impressive!

This hotel's great name and historic reputation are unfortunately no longer justifiable. The "Executive" room which we were allocated was sad and dowdy. I am aware that Britannia are investing massively in their room upgrading programme but this needs to be accelerated if guest's basic needs and expectations are to be met.
The staff work tirelessly and the room was clean but the paintwork. furnishings and fittings were dated and tired. We had a sneaky look at the magnificent ballroom and dining room which still retain their charm and elegance but this needs to be rapidly replicated in the guest rooms if you are to generate repeat business from a increasingly critical clientele. Breakfast excellent, staff helpful and friendly, thanks to our friends from the EU!

Room Tip: Ask to inspect the room before you accept it!

Stayed here for 3 nights in august, quick check in on arrival, not the most friendly reception staff to start visit . went up to our room which was balmoral suite on second floor, was a suite with front room with old lovely fire and two three seater sofas, we also had a Hugh bedroom with two double beds. Room old and dated but was clean, few stains on celings and flank paint on windows but was OK. We was there half board, breakfast was buffet when OK b t very little choice for the kids, poor service from staff as short staffed as we over heard them moanng all the time, evening meal time was care home food. Soft and mushy food, eatable but some food tasteless. You better being bed and breakfast only. Hotel is dated but OK, good hotel to explore its history and past. Overall OK but full of old people like a varehome, even care home furniture and entertainment all for old people.

Room Tip: Large suties better

It is a bit run down and dated but it was clean, staff were friendly, good size room and food was edible. I would return as I personally think for the price you couldn't ask for much more. Stayed in worse for a lot more money.
