We came to the Prince of Wales hotel in Southport on a Paul Bailey Dance weekend, very pleased with this hotel our bedroom was large and the bed was comfortable, ballroom was great and a nice wood floor to dance on.Our meals were buffet style and we enjoyed both breakfast and evening meals,we got free Coffee and Buck's Fizz when we went into the ballroom and jugs of cold water, the staff were very pleasant. Great location all in all we thought it was a very nice hotel and enjoyed our stay .

Room Tip: We were in 320 very quiet

This could be such a beautiful hotel but it is in urgent need of refurbishment. We had to run the gamut of cigarette smoke to enter or leave the hotel; surely a smoking shelter could be put up away from the main door. The lift was broken and we had to use the filthy service lift. Room was ok though the bed was very hard. The bathroom was very grubby and the cold water came out with lumps of black in it. Breakfast was supposed to be from 7am and as we had to leave early for an appointment we were down at 2 minutes past. It was made very clear we were considered to be too early. We were not offered tea or coffee and had to go and ask for it.The hot food was beyond disgusting. Bearing in mind it was still only just after 7 am the eggs seemed to have been under warming lights for hours and were hard as rubber. Black pudding needed a hammer and chisel. Mushrooms straight out of a tin- watery and tasteless. I have stayed in many hotels over the years and can honestly say I have never had such an awful breakfast. To end on a positive- parking was cheap.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

Just been to Southport and stayed here for three nights. What a wonderful hotel this must have been in it's hay day. Sadly the bedrooms desperately need updating, they're tired and out of date, having said that they were clean and tidy, although I didn't sleep well as the beds are like slabs of concrete. Come on Britannia spend some money, The staff were pleasant and helpful and the food okay. It was my first trip to Southport and I must say I was impressed, There're are loads of shops and the pubs were good,It's easy for walking as it's flat so okay if you have problems. Tuesday night in the Flagstaff was great with live music and jamming sessions.I think I would definitely go back .

Room Tip: ask for one of the suites as these are a bit bigger

Water leaked through ceiling onto me from the room above. I complained all they did was to say it has happened before and would report it. No customer service, NO rebate of any sort.

Visiting Southport for the flower show for the day we decided to stay the night and booked into the Prince of Wales hotel. After leaving the show we went to the hotel a bit earlier than planned at about 2.15pm to get out of the rain. When we tried to book in we were told by the receptionist that check in was not till 3pm. She really needs to improve her people skills as she was rather inflexible - the room was most probably ready had she bothered to check. We were unable to get a hot drink while waiting in the lounge till we booked in as there was only one waitress trying to serve 20+ guests on her own... Not good. Satellite TV in the lounge was not working properly, picture freeze every minute or so spoiling guests viewing of The live football. The guest lift was not working so everyone had to use the service elevator. No sign on the lift though to say it was out of action and entrance to the service lift was through a grubby side door off the corridor. Hotel decor a bit shabby in places, holes in the walls patched up but not re painted properly. Lights flickering on and off.
A really nice old building, but the hotel looks very tired. It could do with some TLC and money spent on it, and the experience made better with more customer-focused management. You get what you pay for I guess as was pretty cheap for this time of year.
One last comment, check out the wheelchair access.... Where's the ramp?

This is a very tired looking Hotel past its best, but could be magnificent if restored to it's former glory. Having said that it was clean and met our needs agree with previous reviewer "you only get what you pay for" most of the staff friendly but were very busy. Lift still out of order begs the question are Britannia going to spend any money on it!!

We stayed here with a coach party so "you only get what you pay for " springs to mind. From the minute you walk into reception , it feels like you have been transported back in time to 1980.
Shabby hotel , badly needs TLC .I feel sorry for the staff , who were very pleasant , but have to work in this depressing place.
Our room was tired and very old looking , but at least it was clean , if you ignore the filthfy windows. Breakfast was fine , I have had worse .
I wouldnt recommend this hotel unless its the only one available, but it serves us right for booking a cheap coach trip over bank holiday , never again !
