“Do they want new business?”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2012

Having stayed at this hotel with a group of friends in Feb 2011,where we filled the whole hotel we thought we would book it again. Having tried on SEVERAL occasions I eventually got to speak to some one . I explained that I would like to book the WHOLE of the hotel for a week-end if Feb 1013 and could they E-mail the details of rooms and prises etc.Two more phone calls from me and STILL I have not been contacted by the hotel All I can say is that business must be very good if they can turn down the opportunity of all those room been booked at once.

Booked an upgraded room and left highly disappointed for the price. The room itself was freezing due to the fact it seemed to actually be the fire escape! There was a door in our room leading directly onto the fire escape ladders but as it wouldn't shut properly the room was cold. Plus from the very early hours of morning the fire escape provided the perfect place for the local birdlife to meet up which made for an excellent unwanted alarm call. On the plus side, the female staff member on reception we met was very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good. The hotel itself on the whole is OK but the whole experience was let down by the poor quality of the room we were allocated which was nowhere near value for money and would have been expensive at half the price

Having read earlier reviews about how 'brilliant' this place was, we decided to book in at this B&B whilst we were staying in Southport for our friends wedding. On arrival, I thought the place was shut in fact I had to double check we were at the correct hotel. There were no obvious staff members around. There was a young lady who worked there and she was absolutely lovely. She offered to carry our bags and showed us directly to our room. We came down to the bar to have a drink and the same young lady served us. We later came out of our room and the same young lady was tidying bed sheets away. Do they not have any more staff to work the afternoon? I can't imagine what would have happened if the hotel was extremely busy. Surely they aren't relying on one staff member to do everything? Never mind the fact we agreed it's not particularly safe for a young girl to be alone! Normally when we stay in B&B's or hotels were given a time frame for breakfast e.g 7-10 however this B&B made us give a time for breakfast meaning we couldn't get up at our leisure and felt like we were pressured into eating at a certain time. There was no senior management present and the following morning, you guessed it, the same young lady attended to our needs along with two other members of staff. Our room was comfortable, but for the amount we paid I expected a hell of a lot more. Put it this way, I have stayed in much nicer hotels for less with a lot more staff on hand. At one point I had to go wandering to find someone to give me a clean towel, this is when I soon realised there was only one member of staff on. In fact i'd give my full praise to the young lady who was the only redeeming feature of this B&B.

We have stayed in many hotels and B&B's and for the money £95 for one night is a complete rip off. We asked for a quiet room and were given the "studio" which was basically a family room in the attic a kitchen (which we didn't need or use). The hotel bolier was in a cupboard in the room which was very noisey but the main problem is that there are no curtains, there is a velux window in the bedroom and from dawn light comes streaming into the room making it impossible to sleep. The carpets were stained and had not been hoovered, the bathroom had a drains smell and the shower barely worked.
The only time we saw any staff was at breakfast and they just did their job, nothing more and i didn't see anybody in charge to raise the issue of the window. Breakfast was ok, we had to ask if we wanted anything, on no occasion did the staff come to us to ask if we needed anything.
I cannot comprehend the other reviews which rave about this place.

Room Tip: I wouldn't recommend staying here too expensive for what it is.

As a lot of people tend to only read the first few lines of a review I'll start with the best thing about this hotel - the yound lady who was on reception. She was so welcoming and pleasant and really made me feel like she cared that I had a good stay. So often you stay in lovely hotels where the staff struggle to be pleasant. Not here; she really was excellent.

I booked this hotel via Bookings.com after checking the reviews on TripAdvisor. The hotel itself is located fairly close to the centre of town; certainly only a short taxi ride away. The en-suite room I was allocated was very clean and the bed very comfortable. The en-suite bathroom had plenty of towels, with soap, shampoo and conditioner. Tea and coffee making facilities were in the room, with a couple of bottles of water; very thoughtful. The flat-screen TV didn't have built in Freeview, but an additional set-top box took care of this.

There is a nice little bar downstairs with comfy sofa and a TV; ideal for a pre-dinner drink whilst waiting for a taxi.

We booked the hotel based on its excellent recent reviews on Trip Adviser and we certainly weren't disappointed. We had a minor issue with the booking as I booked with booking.com but I contacted the hotel directly to try to resolve this and they couldn't have been more helpful in accommodating our party. We stayed in room 12, the family room on the top floor, which came with the added bonus of its own kitchenette. The room itself was tastefully decorated with lovely soft furnishings, plenty of storage space and really comfortable beds. There was a considerable choice of breakfast, which was cooked to order. We’d definitely stay here again.

Having stayed at a very good guest house in Southport for the last few years which has now changed hands we decided to try somewhere new.
We chose Carleton House on the back of some very good reviews on this website and hoped it would match our previous accommodation.
We needn't have worried - Carleton House is a very welcoming and well run guest house. No complaints whatsoever.
Hope to return in the future and have no hesitation in recommending it.
