“Great value for our golfing trip”
Reviewed 14 September 2011

Great location, great golf courses within 10 minutes including Hillside, Birkdale, S&A - comfortable, clean, great reception team, breakfast service the Achilles heel of the whole operation but food excellent. Plenty of great pubs and restaurants just a short stroll away. Swimming pool and gym on site. We will be back. Thank you

From the outside, this is a beautiful hotel. Inside it is very dated. Stayed here for 4 night in August 2011 during a golfing holiday. Large hotel with wedding that dominated the lounge bar. Telephones did not work in rooms. Public computers/interest in lobby was "down" and management in no hurry to get working. The positives were than the rooms were decent.
Breakfast is another story. This is a large hotel with a buffet breakfast. The dining room/breakfast area is a decent size, but too small for the number of rooms. Regarding the buffest breakfast. The plates were HOT, so hot that they provided napkins to use while holding your plate to serve. It gets worse. It was very difficult to navigate the hot breakfast bar. The heat lamps were hot, but whats worse is that many of the serving utensils (large spoons, spatulas, etc) had no handles. Metal utensils in hot food equals very hot handles. I actually saw a guest burn his hand. This hotel could go to a local kitchen store and buy some new serving utensils with rubber handles or handles that did not conduct heat and would make a lot of difference. They use also buy a new serving station as their current is too small, too difficult to navigage, and in general just WAY TOO Hot. I am sure the guy I saw burn his hand was not the first. They should address this issue IMMEDIATELY. Overall this hotel was decent, but breakfast was not fun navigating the hot everything.

BONUS: This hotel is walking distance from Maloney's Pub, which is one of England's top pubs for flair. Worth checking out!

Average hotel but in a lovely spot overlooking the sea and the staff were brilliant....1st stop on a two week trip around the north of England so we're hoping things get just a tad better.... I would revisit if I was coming back to Southport

Third time we've visited this hotel albeit only for three to four day stays.

The rooms are clean and made up very quickly in the morning (a pet bug of mine.) by very friendly staff. Reception staff this year weren't very good. We left without even a "did you enjoy your stay?" whicfh we thought was very poor indeed.
We had a room on,ly stay and the value was good (£71.00 a night.) The breakfast is WAY overpriced and we found it cheaper and nicer to eat in Morrisons 100 yards away.

Evening meals however were excellent even though we chose to eat in Ask one night.

Speaking of which the hotel is ideally placed for the centre of town and for a view of the sea (Even though the sea is about 50 miles away <g>)

Good parking and a good sized lounge with two bars.

We're in our 60's but even we found the clientele a bit old. There seem to be a lot of coach parties aimed at the over 70s.

But all in all we'd go again.

Oh - free WiFi.

I stayed at the Royal Clifton, Southport as I was travelling in the area on business. When I arrived I found a parking place at the front, but would imagine that parking maybe cramped during the peak season. The Entrance to the hotel is very grand and there is a large residents area. The check in was fine, and I found my room at the back of the hotel. The veiw from the bedroom window was dreary to say the least, and the room quite bland, but clean. As there was a large party of elderly people staying during my visit I decided against using the hotel restaurant, instead opting for a bar menu which provided a basic selection of main meals. The hotel does have free Wi-Fi but I found this was limited in the content it would allow access to which I found quite frustrating. I enjoyed a good nights sleep and check out was straightfoward. I would stay again but would try to obtain a better room with a view.

Room Tip: Try to get a seaview!
