“Well situated but expensive”
Reviewed 8 April 2009

We stayed at the Royal Clifton from 3rd April to 5th April to attend the Grand National meeting and for my wife and her twin sisters birthday.
The hotel is very well situated on the promenade and close to all the central attractions and shops and has an imposing presence. Inside the hotel has an air of an age past and appears very grand in the entrace area. check in was quick and easy. However parking was impossible at the front of the hotel and we had to park in the pay and display on the road. There was also a strong small of fish in the lounge.
We were on the second floor and our room (245) was a good size and clean although tired. Everything worked and there was tea and coffee and biscuits in the room. The view was of the wall of another hotel, the mattress and pillows had seen better days and the shower only worked if you held it in your hand.
The walk to the main shopping area was easy and flat and we had dnner in town (because of the fish smell) and returned for drinks later. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the main bar lounge (although it was fully occupied on Saturday night with a function) and drinks are reasonably priced. Our room was quiet but our friends were on the ground floor and had little sleep either night with the noise from the bar and streets.
There is a lot of choice for breakfast although some items were cold on our first day. Second day was fine.
Staff are friendly and efficient in the restaurant and bar and our room was well cleaned although we did not get our early morning call we booked on our first morning but did get one second morning that we didnt book (both couples).
All in all it is a reasonable hotel but I expcted more for £122.50 a night

Found the hotel to be spot on located to the Southern end of the promenade, but very handy for the town centre, the Esplagnade Park, the pier and nightlife. The hotels own leisure facilities were very good.
Only two small gripe was with the set-up of the Breakfast Room, it was abit manic as the entrance/exit door is right next to the area were the food is served (buffet style self service), which meant peolpe with hot food and plates were having to pick their way through guest coming in and leaving the restraunt area. Also the fact that the utensils used for serving the food are left under the hot lights so they were very hot and that could be a bit dangerous if a child was to use them.

The impression that I come away with from this hotel is that the staff are doing their best but there simply aren't enough of them to cope with the size of the hotel. Car park is on the front of the hotel and is a bit tight. Additional spaces are on the street outside and are free until 8am (cannot recall when charging starts). Our room was on the first floor overlooking the front and was very spacious. It had everything that you would want, although the TV could do with upgrading. The door had new lock on it but was very easy to open, possibly too easy. The bed was very hard. We did not use the restaurant except for breakfast. Despite being the first in for breakfast and the food only just being brought out, I was surprised to find that a lot of the items were cool or cold. Sausage and bacon of poor quality. There was a lot of choice though and the hash browns were very good. The attentiveness of the dining staff leaves a lot to be desired. The table I was shown to had crumbs all over the seat. I ordered coffee but was brought tea. I asked for butter and was promised some, but none arrived. The head waitress seemed more interested in chatting to other guests that she clearly knew rather than attending to her duties. It felt as though we were a nuisance rather than guests.

The hotel is nicely located, close to shops, promising a lot but only delivered faded grandour.

Within walking distance is a cinema which has a good variety of eateries, Frankie & Benny's, Bella Italia, and others.

The only good bit about this place is the pleaseant staff doing their best in difficult circumstances. The decor and furnishing are so tired as to be comatose ! Arrived at 4pm and all the hotel car parks were full so had to park in a public car park. Took 20 mins in a queue to check in. Was absolutely amazed when I arrived at our room that anyone could even think of putting gets in such a room. I would not have accepted the room in a £20 B&B never mind a hotel that was charging me £85. This room cannot have seen a decorator for at least £25 years. The wall paper was peeling off, the paint badly chippeds, furniture broken and badly marked , the tv smashed, feet sticking to the carpet, mould in the bathroom, bed linen was torn and the list goes on. If you do not want to catch something then give this place a really wide berth. The worst hotel I have ever stayed anywhere !

Some superb architecture and a very nice entrance area/bar. The staff are attentive and helpful. That's the total of the good bits. The bad would take a book. In our room, the wallpaper was peeling off, the bed cover was torn, the bath panel was broken, a wall light was loose, the door knob fell off, nearby doors banged every time someone went through them and an extractor fan in the hall was filthy. What looked like an emergency exit with a push bar to open looked painted shut. Oh, and the car park is minute. One of the people who attended this weekend's conference with us, parked up on the road because there were no spaces, dropped his cases off and went back to find a parking ticket on his car. welcome to Southport. I will never return and never organise a conference there.
I nearly forgot, the bill, was horrendous. I can stay in clean luxury with an evening meal for what they charged for bed and breakfast.

Good Place to stay. Nice food and two good bars. The car park was a bit small for the size of the hotel but the room was excellent/. We had one of the newer ones on the third floor and it was very good. We would stay again.
