Best Western Southport Seafront Royal Clifton Hotel & Spa

I'm amazed at some of the negative reviews here. We went on the basis of a special offer which included evening meal (2- course). Admittedly the entire hotel is a bit Victorian in design, because that's precisely what it is, but the plus side is that the rooms are generally very spacious. Our bathroom in particular was large, modern and fully equipped.

The leisure centre is free to guests and I took advantage of the pool, sauna and steam room, even when the bar was open; unheard of!

The meals were all of a superb standard, and the staff very friendly and helpful. The only minus points were:

a) The only bar that was open was a bit noisy, having numerous TV screens and smelling of chips,

b) Rooms at the back of the hotel have a serious problem with noise from nightclubs outside until the early hours of the morning. This is not a problem on the "promenade" side.

We will certainly be going back.

The charm for the Royal Clifton Hotel lies in its history which is clearly visible throughout the building, but is sadly not maintained as it should be. It sits in an ideal location, right near the high street, overlooking the promenade and dominates the landscape in a spectacular way. We stayed here whilst for a spa day at Formby Hall which is only about 11 miles away. If you're staying in Southport its handy, but like most of this town, surrounding the hotel are several run down areas, alleyways, pubs and car parks with some unfavourable characters.
Some of the scathing reviews seem unfair; the rooms are large and clean, however, they are dated, with the bathrooms in need of some serious updating. However, we booked on expedia and got the room for £22.50 a night (without breakfast) which is an absolute bargain! It is perfectly comfortable, has tea and coffee facilties in room and free parking out front. For the money its ideal, but I'd love to see this hotel renovated with care to maintain the historical features at some point in the near future.

After booking this holiday and reading some of the negative views I was going to cancel this hotel but so glad I did'nt as had a lovely stay at the Clifton.
Arrived at this hotel for the May bank holiday 22nd-25th May.with my Husband, Sister and elderly disabled mum. requested room for disabled person which was situated on 1st floor near lift which was well equiped with facilities only gripe bit of a tight squeeze with
wheelchair in lift. Our room was on 2nd floor which was fantastic just been re furnbished
had four poster bed flat screen tele and jacucci bath, Paid a little extra for promenade room but found out on night we were leaving it was the bridal suite very nice.
No complaints about the food as the breakfasts were always very hot. the service from
the restaurant staff at evening meal was excellent and meals well worth the money.
The restaurant is small for such a big hotel but found the staff worked hard to clear tables fast to accomodate guests. Overall had a very pleasant stay and will return again. All I can say is don't be put off by some of the reviews try it and see.

We had booked the room online. The room was priced at £115.00 for bed and breakfast.
The room was small and smelt musty despite both windows open. The paint on the windowsills was chipped and dirty. The bathroom suite was pink and stained, probably at least 30 years old. The towels were grey-white and scratchy. The folder with hotel information looked damaged and old. We returned to reception and were immediately offered a discounted price. We refused and left the hotel.

Unless you get one of the few refurbished rooms this hotel is from "faulty towers".
We were here for a wedding. The room was at best a bed sit. and I have stayed in hostels in Asia that were in better condition. The bathroom had rust and leaked. The main room was full of cowbewbs. The drawers of the units were all falling off and there was a green emergency light that would never go out. To top it all off the phone was stuck to the bed side table by chewing gum!!
I would strongly recommend that you avoid this Hotel and do to the Hoiday Inn or the Mercury hotel just across the road. This hotel is a total rip off

Having read a few negative comments once I had booked this via expedia I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Limited parking on the front concourse wasnt a problem in April but could be in high season. The hotel is large and like the town itself has probably seen better days, but the staff were pleasant and the room clean and spacious enough. I liked the high ceilings and long corridors stuffed with sofas and chairs. The pool was a nice bonus even if it was a little on the cold side, but there was also a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. The bars seemed to priced reasonably, but with a a wide choice nearby we chose to eat out. Breakfast was substantial and tasty so no complaints there either. I would definately consider returning here if I was in Southport again.

We stayed at the Royal Clifton from 3rd April to 5th April to attend the Grand National meeting and for my wife and her twin sisters birthday.
The hotel is very well situated on the promenade and close to all the central attractions and shops and has an imposing presence. Inside the hotel has an air of an age past and appears very grand in the entrace area. check in was quick and easy. However parking was impossible at the front of the hotel and we had to park in the pay and display on the road. There was also a strong small of fish in the lounge.
We were on the second floor and our room (245) was a good size and clean although tired. Everything worked and there was tea and coffee and biscuits in the room. The view was of the wall of another hotel, the mattress and pillows had seen better days and the shower only worked if you held it in your hand.
The walk to the main shopping area was easy and flat and we had dnner in town (because of the fish smell) and returned for drinks later. There is plenty of comfortable seating in the main bar lounge (although it was fully occupied on Saturday night with a function) and drinks are reasonably priced. Our room was quiet but our friends were on the ground floor and had little sleep either night with the noise from the bar and streets.
There is a lot of choice for breakfast although some items were cold on our first day. Second day was fine.
Staff are friendly and efficient in the restaurant and bar and our room was well cleaned although we did not get our early morning call we booked on our first morning but did get one second morning that we didnt book (both couples).
All in all it is a reasonable hotel but I expcted more for £122.50 a night
