Great treat to have the production in the bar. It was done in the round and worked extremely well. I have seen one other bar production but it was not done in the round and felt a bit cramped by comparison

This 400+ seat theatre is a real hidden gem with a large and varied choice of shows from the resident Southport Dramatic Club (SDC) and other local societies who sublet the venue.
The auditorium seats are comfortable, toilets clean and the bar excellent value.
You've never guess Southport Little Theatre was run mainly by volunteers, it's smarter than many professional theatres.
Tucked away down a tunnel off Hoghton street its hidden from all but those prepared to seek it out but this is well worth doing.
The SDC focuses on plays and sublets usually on musicals and occasional dance shows like the one by Loretta Bamber Dance Academy.
The 'Little' is the only theatre in the town that has a fly tower which means scenery can be flown out allowing quick scene changes, invaluable for pantomime which is always one of the SDC's most popular shows.
The club has a long list of members who've cut their teeth at the SDC and gone on to turn professional. Actors have gone into films, tv and professional theatre. These include Oscar winner actress Miranda Richardson, actor (Cardiac Arrest/ The Bill/ Coronation St /Epstein) Andrew Lancel & Sally Bankes (Chicken Tikka Masala/ Housewife 49/Nuzzle & Scratch/ World Without End .
Members have also gone on to forge careers in backstage crafts e.g. lighting the London and Sochi Olympics, staging shows for The Royal Exchange, Buxton Opera House & P&O cruise ships.
Many of these pro's return 'home' with invaluable help and advice which could be a clue to the generally good standard of acting, though as with all companies amateur and professional alike the standard varies - sometimes from night to night.
Plays run for 8 nights from Friday to the Saturday of the following week which means if there's a really good show it's often sold out early in the run.
Tickets are very reasonably priced and there are some excellent discounts, the best being for subscribers for the whole season of 8 plays starting in September.
The last show I saw there was the out of season production (in the bar) of Agnes of God. A very powerful drama beautifully acted and directed. It had simple but very effective staging and some clever lighting. A real gem in a gem of a building.
If you haven't discovered it yet - what are you waiting for?

This is a gorgeous little theatre with a very reasonably priced bar. I visited the Pantomime in 2013 with my family and it was grand for us all - my three kids ranging from 4-13 were enthralled and even my husband and I found lots of laughs.

The theatre is the right size for a decent audience to participate but intimate enough that there are no bad seats.
