My partner and I ordered a buffet here last week, and the restaurant kindly allowed me to substitute my main for a prawn option for a supplementary fee. I love the food here, it's really fresh and tastes authentic, not like the nasty msg grub in most Chinese restaurants in Southport. Service as always was really attentive. Not cheap but you get what you pay for here.

To TaylorClanX,

Thank you for spending time to place a review on our TripAdvisor page. I am so happy you had an enjoyable time and I have passed on the comments to all the staff. I am glad you changed the meals to suit yourself, as we offer the banquets as a type of guide.

The fresh ingredients including the vegetables, the meats, the fish, the seafood items like scallops, lobsters and crab are tough in sourcing. Christine resorts to leaving home sometimes at 3 or 4am to drive to the market to purchase the highest graded goods and fresh seafood which is caught earlier that morning.

We believe that the only factor which stops us achieving the most authentic tastes is the quality of the ingredients that can be purchased. Christine tries incredibly hard to achieve the highest standards possible that once served Princess Diana and Prince Charles. The high standards of the goods and the chef skills, we believe that we don't need adding bad ingredients like MSG (monosodium glutamate) to be palatable.

We have been finding it very difficult to source high quality ingredients at low costs and with increasing costs of ground rents, service charge and better wages for our staff, we believe the costs are reasonable in comparison to our competitors.

Once again, thank you for your time in leaving a comment. Hope to see you again soon

if your looking for a good quality chinese takeaway in southport then steer well clear of this place , firstly i ordered almost £50 of food off the menu , and when i jokingly asked whether free prawn crackers were included the girl on the phone said that she would have to speak to the manager , that leads me to believe the management are very strict with the staff and are very very money orientated , so when i finally picked the meals up i should of checked at the restaurant , for example chicken satay skewers , on the menu at almost £8 , have just 2 scrawny skewrs inside , one of the fried rices was missing , basically this restaurant serves low quality foods at high prices , maybe eating in is a different story , but please PLEASE , do not give them the time of day for takeaway , you will be sorely dissapointed , they are just ripping people off , shame on you cathay garden

To joseph b,

I am so sorry to hear about your experience at Cathay Garden. I just want to ensure you that we use the freshest ingredients and highest graded meats and fish available. We also use the same ingredients and portion sizes for our eat-in and take-away food.

I am puzzled how other customers praise the standard of the food, but your experience wasn't as so. With the amount of outgoings including the cost of ingredients, ground rent and service charges, we do not believe we are 'ripping people off'.

If you have any other queries in the future, please don't hesitate to contact Christine and we can sort out missing items if there are any.

Thank you

To patmersyside,

Thank you for your time in writing a lovely review. The Cathay Garden Taster menu is £10.90 and lets you try various dishes you wouldn't usually go for to discover a new favourite chinese dish!

Thanks again for your review

After reading rave reviews on here and family members recommending, we thought we would try it out. Service was excellent but it went downhill from there... Chips are soggy oven chips, prawn crackers not fresh, fried rice doesn't taste fresh... Worst of all, our main meal choice ( crispy shredded beef is low on flavour and chewy as hell... At a total cost of £24 I wish we hadn't bothered!

To Southportrev,

Im sorry to hear about your bad experience at Cathay Garden. The crispy dishes are freshly deep fried. The chips and beef strips should be crunchy and this should have been highlighted to a member of staff.

Even for our takeaway, we stop crispy foods from becoming soft by letting parts of dishes air using a loose paper bag around the take-away container.

If there are any problems, please highlight the issues to Christine and she will resolve the matters in the future.

Thanks

We decided to go out for a meal on a Monday night and plumped for Cathay Garden as we have been meaning to try it again since it reopened - and we were thrilled with our choice. We were made welcome and shown to our seats straight away - we were the only people in, but we didn't feel uncomfortable. We ordered the Taster Menu for £10.90 which included soup, ribs, chicken, spring roll and a choice of three mains from a long list, and fried rice. It was all served quickly and piping hot. The small portions of mains were lovely and really have made us want to go back ASAP for a banquet. We had a lovely evening with excellent food, it is situated at one end of Lord Street and doesn't get much passing trade, but this restaurant really is too good to pass up - definitely the best Chinese restaurant in Southport and deserves more custom - we will most certainly become regulars from now on.

To Billyinda,

Thank you for your time in writing such a nice review for Cathay Garden.

The taster menu at £10.90 per head are designed to be small so that you can taste a few dishes rather than having the same favourite dish.

Thank you for such kind words and the recommendations to your friends.

Hope to see you again soon
