“Disappointing”
Reviewed 14 September 2013

We stayed here in August for my birthday and my husband booked a package through offpeak luxury(who are very good). Part of te package was a free upgrade and a bottle of sparkling wine. When we arrived we were told we could not upgrade as there were no rooms free. We were given the Blue room. This room was tiny and the bed is not big enough for 2! Also you cannot see the tv from the bed which is ridiculous. The room was shoddy and needed decorating. I complained and there was suddenly a better room available. The room was again in need of a freshen up. When we requested the wine with dinner they knew nothing about the package and had to go away and ask. The bar lady was lovely and very helpful. The dinner was nice. When we came to leave they had not deducted the wine so again we had to dispute. We were made to feel like we were moaners and both felt very uncomfortable with reception staff pulling faces at each other without realising that I could see. This hotel is not cheap and is overpriced. The sister hotel Ockenden Manor is far superior

I am sorry we did not respond in a correct manner to your requests and needs. We would always upgrade if we had availability, sadly this is not always the case. Warm wishes

Had the opportunity to spend a week at the Spread Eagle on business in 2011. While the service could have been a bit better, in all it was a wonderful experience. It's not often one can spend a week in an Inn that could just as easily be a museum. The breakfast spread was excellent, and dinner was wonderful on the nights we dined there. Overall, Midhurst was a lovely place to visit, and our stay at the Spread Eagle was great fun.

Room Tip: The rooms in the old post house are small, but nice, and well located.

The hotel is full of character. It has some very attractive features. The restaurant food is excellent with huge portions. The service needs to improve. There was nobody around to take our order in the afternoon when we wanted to bave drinks and relax in the conservatory. we had to go and find somebody. The food took a very long time and actually we only ordered a cheese sandwich! The bar was very slow with one lady managing it with lots of people waiting. The hotel is incredibly tired and shabby. It is in serious need of some a revamp. The carpets are old and stained, paint is peeling off and the rooms are tatty. My bedside table was so old and wonky I couldn't put anything in it as it all slid off!! The tea tray had crumbs over it and 2bisuits wrapped in some kitchen roll for us to eat?!
The bathroom was not very clean.
The hotel spa is quite good and the pool clean.
Overall The hotel had great food but needs a lot of money spent on it to update it. I couldn't believe the general condition of it when you consider price.

Thank you for the pointers we are approaching the renewal of some of the items you have commented on. This is a continual programme and takes time. In addition the bathrooms are being re-modelled and baths being replaced. I am sorry about the length of time the sandwich took, it is not normal. I have amended the presentation of the biscuits.

What a venue, if you want something special try this as a really excellent environment, loved the food . The bedrooms look rather more traditional however. Will give this a for a weekend soon. Our meal was in the bar area, a very specialnoldcworld room.

We booked a Sunday night via the offpeakluxury site to take advantage of the meal and spa offer. We had a fabulous stay - each and every member of staff we encountered was friendly, courteous and helpful. Our room was gorgeous - with a boutique feel; view of the court yard and a roll top bath which was a real bonus - I must say that the photos of the rooms on the website, do not reflect the reality of the room we had. The photos make the rooms look very dated and this wasn't our experience at all. The hotel itself is full of character, very old but well maintained and the gardens are very pretty. The Spa was also a pleasant surprise - really well equipped and modern. I am 26 weeks pregnant and had an amazing mum-to-be massage with a caring and experienced therapist who made the whole experience really enjoyable.

The food was of high quality and the breakfast was plentiful (continental featuring proper home cooked ham as well as croissants, granola etc) and the cooked breakfast was delicious. We had a meal the night before as part of the deal we had booked. The food was lovely, if expensive and my only criticism was the lack of atmosphere in the bar and restaurant which despite containing quite a few people was very quiet! Perhaps some tasteful low-level music might help

We would definitely return and have recommended to friends.

Room Tip: We had room 20 which although small was very comfortable and quiet and looked over the courtyard. Ad...

My Husband and I stayed for a couple of nights, lovely Hotel and the Spa was really nice. Staff very helpful and just the right distance for Goodwood Racetrack.
We had a lovely meal in the restaurant.
Breakfast was good

Room Tip: Our room was facing on to the road and was a little noisy in the morning

We visited for dinner as a group of five mid week. All of us had been before (and had had excellent experiences) but not for some while.
The restaurant itself is charming in an "old world" way.
Overall while we all enjoyed our food we all felt that the portions were far from generous for the price and there were a few quality issues (eg fishcakes with too much 'filling' of sweetcorn and some tough calves liver).
The price of wine and spirits was very much at the high end of the spectrum.
None of us object to high prices IF there is value for money - none of us felt this was the case here.
Service was friendly and efficient if a little slow at times.
There was hardly anyone else in the restaurant (three of the other four tables were couples who were resident). This was in contrast to some of the other restaurants in Midhurst that evening which we passed which were fairly busy.
Overall a reasonably pleasant evening out however there is better food and value for money elsewhere in other Midhurst restaurants.
