“Hotel & Spa – An experience to remember”
Reviewed 1 June 2014

We had originally booked the Hotel as a Couple, but due to domestic arrangements at home had to accommodate our youngest son (15) and our dog. We had an upgrade on our room arranged to suit without fuss. In an old building such as the Spread Eagle, you have to put up with the undulations and quirks. Ok, there were stairs and uneven floors, a pain at times but we loved it. We were offered assistance with our luggage which we accepted gratefully. A large bowl of food was put in the room for the dog. Fortunately we spotted it before the dog so prevented her from gobbling it all up. The room furniture had been adjusted with bits added to the feet etc to make it level(ish) against the wonky floors – wonderful – you have to have a smile on your face. However, the wardrobe and bathroom were so well fitted in with the old architecture and to an excellent standard.

On the food front, probably more expensive than we are used to, but once served up, the quality and combinations of flavours produced was a gastronomic experience to savour. Breakfast was probably not a lot difference from other places we’ve visited but the selection of food with cereals fruit and meats to suit wide range of nationalities was very good.

Moving to the Spa facility, probably the best overall that we have experienced. Although we did not have any treatments there were a lot on offer with various creams/oils etc. The gym looked in good shape but again we did not use it. The swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room were first class and was contained in a very relaxing atmosphere. Regular checks were made in the short amount of time we were using the facility.

I suppose I must mention the management and staff. Absolutely no problem – very friendly and helpful and professional in their jobs. I was very impressed with the efficient manner they readied the dining room for the following meal session or following day. The appearance was kept up to a very high standard – no sloppiness here.

All in all, an experience to remember. We will look forward to popping along for another short break in the future.

Dear Bigglesy,

Thank-you for you review of The Spread Eagle Hotel & Spa, I have recently taken over as the new General Manager here and I am extremely pleased that you thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of your stay including the old charm of the property and all the quirks that go with it such as the uneven and wonky floors which I, too, LOVE!

It is interesting that you mentioned about the breakfast selection as we have recently tweaked this to make it even more exciting and give it a slightly rustic look and feel with additions including a homemade Bircher Muesli, Pina Colada Fruit Salad (with the addition of white rum is you are up to it!) and Virgin Mary (or if you are feeling adventurous... Bloody Mary!).

I am glad your 15 year old son and dog enjoyed the hotel too and I hope to have the pleasure in personally welcoming you all back to the House in the near future. I would certainly recommend trying our Family Fun Package and discovering the '10 things to do before you're grown up!' and/or our 'Muddy Paws' package if doggy need some serious 'pooch pampering'! Alternatively if you just need some pampering for the two of you book one of our Spa Breaks for some serious indulgence and relaxation.

Kindest Regards

J-J Pollak

Visited the Spread Eagle Hotel last week for 3 nights. From the friendliness of the welcome, standard of cleanliness and the exemplary professionalism of all the staff this is definitely somewhere to come back to. Breakfast in the morning was a treat served by Shirley who is friendly and cheerful. Ate in the restaurant on 2 evenings and it was of a high standard of cuisine. Did not use the spa facilities so cannot comment on this.

We have just returned from a weekend stay at the spread eagle and I can honestly say it was one of the best places we have stayed. It ticked all boxes...amazing food, lovely rooms, relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, clean and modem spa. The most impressive aspect of our stay had to be the customer service. All staff were friendly and accommodating! I feel the need to mention more specifically Faith who provided us with excellent service in a friendly manner on more than one occasion and the gentlemen who served us in a suit throughout our stay also on more than one occasion. I would love to return to the spread eagle again!! Thank you spread eagle!!

Where to begin? The restaurant, rooms and service are all absolutely amazing. If you are taking dogs on holiday then this hotel is a major plus. Very dog centric (I think the dogs were looked after better than we were). Lovely bar and restaurant. The room was very well appointed, clean and well looked after.

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for a room away from the main reception area, just so that you are not interr...

My Wife and I had a very disappointing stay at the Spread Eagle.
The food in the restaurant made my wife very ill but the hotel staff and manager we very dismissive of us and offered no support or concern for our welfare whatsoever.
We will not be returning to the Spread Eagle.

Whatever the cause of your wife's illness it resulted in a very disappointing stay, which I am terribly sorry about. And I am sorry if you felt our responses were dismissive and uncaring, but please let me reassure you that this was utterly not the case. Your wife's illness was taken very seriously and a vigorous investigation was carried out by several parties, but, as you know, there was nothing that pointed to the food your wife consumed in the hotel. There are requirements and procedures that need to be followed in these circumstances and I am sorry if the way it was handled caused further distress. I do hope that when some time has passed you and your wife might consider returning to one of our hotels as our guests and enjoy happier memories - more like those of our guests who have recently posted their reviews. If you do decide to visit one of our hotels one day please contact me directly and I will make the arrangements for you.

In an effort to escape our teenage children, we booked a night away at this lovely, quiet hotel. From the moment we arrived, to when we left, we were impressed by the warmth of the welcome and levels of service. This is a lovely place to escape to for a weekend. The spa is clean and relaxing. Although we didn't have any treatments, we spent time in the pool, sauna and steam rooms. We ate in the hotel in the evening - the food was very good. The steaks were tender and perfectly cooked and the deserts were also very good. Breakfast was a positive feast - with delicious locally sourced produce.
Our room was overlooking the road and I was a little concerned that it may have been noisy - but it wasn't an issue. The bed was a four poster and a little bit short but comfortable non the less. The best bit (in my opinion) was the huge bathroom with a freestanding bath. It seemed very luxurious. I agree with one of the other reviews - the floors are a bit creaky and un-even, but this is a 400 year old building and for me, it was part of the charm.
I definitely recommend escaping to this hotel for a relaxing break.
