Had a great value one night Sunday stay here. Deal included dinner bed and breakfast plus £30 spa voucher. Room was lovely if a little tired and looked out onto the courtyard. The spa was small but clean although the sauna wasn't working that day. We had a great sandwich in the wheatsheaf pub just round the corner and their beer was great too. The staff were very friendly and could not be faulted. My only disappointment was the dinner. Mine was good but my husbands steak was not edible and he had to send it back to the kitchen. It really was like old boots and he isn't a fussy eater! All in all though a lovely break away and I would give it another go. Just wouldn't order steak next time!

Lovely hotel set in a quiet little town. Staff were good and attentive with a couple of the waitresses one warm evening doing a fantastic job under the watchful eye of the new hotel manager! Bedrooms look as if they are being refurbished at the moment so the garden room we were in was very nice.

Food was very nice and a good choice of beers on at the bar.

We would be happy to return again.

I returned to the Spread Eagle after a few years' absence and was delighted and surprised! This classic gem has been spruced up so that it still retains its significant ole worlde charme (the wonderful maze-like quality is very much part of that) while providing more modern facilities. My cycling buddy and I booked in for a 'cycling' weekend; the room was very clean and spacious. Often twin rooms are 'bijoux' but our room was far from that; plenty of space for two friends sharing. Will in the spa took considerable time to create a cycling route for us that took us through stunning Sussex countryside. Over and above!

The food really was delicious; an amazing cheese soufflé was preceded by an old school prawn cocktail with a cheeky kick. The breakfast was really outstanding; the bircher muesli was subtly enhanced with cinnamon and the 'pina colada' fruit salad was a glorious taste of the Caribbean.

I will be back!

We stayed at the Spread Eagle as we were attending a wedding in the South Downs. The hotel is very old, a bit of a maze to be honest. The weather was very hot and as the hotel is so old they did not have any aircon. The windows were painted shut and to get a breath of air was almost impossible. The bathroom room had baths not showers. The spa, a new section of the hotel was a blessing. Here you could lay out in the small garden area and dip in and out of the pool. They had showers and a hairdryer. The treatments were very good as long as you had booked in advance. The staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much of a problem for them. The breakfasts were excellent and we also had an evening meal in the hotel. It was very expensive for the standard of the hotel. But some folk seem to like the quaint set up.

Room Tip: WE upgraded to a more expensive room, but it was still hot ad stuffy.

My husband booked us in for a night's stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and we were not disappointed. We booked through LastMinute, and got a really good deal with B&B, chocolates in the room, a spa treatment each (and full use of the spa for both days, even after check-out) plus money towards an evening meal.

Upon arrival our dinner reservation was made and we were shown around the hotel and then to our room. The room was clean, and although not big, it was fine for the time we were staying and as expected, based on the age of the property.

For dinner and breakfast, the restaurant staff were extremely accommodating and helpful, and food was excellent (good portion size).

The spa was fantastic; clean, modern and plenty of space to relax following a treatment or swim. The staff were also very attentive.s

The reception staff were very helpful and made our stay very enjoyable. Would recommend and definitely visit again!

The Spread Eagle Hotel does no warrant any Star Rating.

In May I took a party of 10 elderly people to this Hotel for coffee and a Bar Lunch. Out of courtesy I had previously booked, admittedly for 13 people, but as with elderly people three had dropped out due to health problems.

On arrival we were greeted by I assume the Manager who showed us to the Bar area where we had reserved seating. The seating was split between two tables with a walkway from the street to the Bar in between. Three waiters came to take our order for coffee which was duly served with a lovely plate of biscuits. From then on the service was appalling.
The sandwiches were brought into Bar at the same time as the coffee although it was only 11.30a.m. We were not asked if we wanted the sandwiches with the coffee, it was just assumed. There was one large tray of sandwiches which had no Clingfilm covering to prevent them from dry out. We had ask for the sandwiches to be covered over. We had to request dirty cups to be cleared from the table.

For Bar Service we had to find a member of staff to come and serve us. Again when we wanted to have our sandwiches there was no member of staff to hand out the plates and pass the sandwiches round. We were given small tea plates for our sandwiches. There was salad served with the sandwiches but we had no means of eating the sandwiches.

There was insufficient sandwiches for the number of people present.

Finally as we were departing we were asked to pay a further £19.00 for the three who hadn't turned up.

I have had contact with the hotel and the owner regarding our visit and there has been no
apology.

This hotel was expensive andI would not recommend this hotel.

Dear Janet S,

I realise that it was over two years ago that you came to us for coffee, biscuits and sandwiches, but if you are ever in the area or have a reason to visit then would seriously recommend you coming back to try us! I do not recognise any of your negative points you mention at today's Spread Eagle and I think you would thoroughly enjoy the standard and quality of the hotel and service if you were to come back now. We have been working hard over the past two years since I have arrived at the hotel and as you will see from our other reviews, we are a very different establishment to the one you visited back in May 2014.

I appreciate you did speak to the hotel's owner at the time, but if you did not receive an apology I would like to personally apologise on behalf of The Spread Eagle, so please accept my most sincere apologies.

I look forward to hopefully having the opportunity to welcome you back in the near future and if you would like to return, please speak to me directly as I would me more than happy to personally handle any future reservations or bookings.

Kindest regards,

J-J Pollak
