We have been staying at the Gainsborough on and off for 8 years sometimes twice a year and have watched it go downhill especially over the last 3-4 years.
Last year was the final straw, the room was dirty and smelt of damp but what made us so mad was the fact that we booked a continental breakfast as we had an early morning flight, well the coffee was cold and the water for the tea luke warm then there was No milk so cereal was out, ok we thought we'll have toast, made that (yes there was bread (but NO BUTTER!!!) I searched all the cupboards no joy. THE FRIDGE WAS FULL OF WORKMENS LUNCH BOXES so no room for anything in there not even a yoghurt!!!! I phoned the duty whoever who wasn't interested and I assume just turned over and went back to sleep.

We are now looking for another B&B in Horley as we will never go back to the gainsborough. If anyone knows of a decent one please let me know.

Room Tip: Do not go to the Gainsborough

Stayed at this place for 5 nights and it was my worst nightmare. The staff were very rude and the owner very obnoxious. I was in the customer living room watching TV and his small child came in and swtiched the TV over and made alot of noise.

Room was smelly and toilet smelt of urine, the toilet was the smallest I had ever seen it was barely shoulder width.

The cleaner did not clean the room peroperly and left one of the beds unmade.

The kitchen shoould have afood inspection as there were dished lying everwhere dirty amonst the garbage and the dirty cooker.

Only good point was the location and it was cheap.

Would never stay here again and the place should be withdrawn from all booking websites.

Try it at your peril.

We booked this place as it was near the airport but that is it.It advertises licenced bar but after a long journey i was told there was no bar.The stairs are small and hard to get your cases to your room. The room is very basic and smelly.Alarm clock did not work, luckily my wife woke in time for the trip to the airport. On our return and walking to the supposed pick up point to phone for transfer. There was no information,so we had to lug our cases back to the termiknal and get a taxi. When we got back we had to wait as the courtesy bus was dropping off.
The last straw was getting home to find my credit card had been charged an extra £50.00 as a penalty for smoking in the room.I do not smoke indoors at home and certainly would not smoke in any indoor area.So with taxis, one nights stay and parking.Just under £150.
Stay away from this place.

Room Tip: Forgot to add noisy from raod at front of building.

First impressions was good especially after reading the reviews. Rooms were clean staff were polite and breakfast was good although they could do with serving beans.

On arrival for a one night stay, waited in reception as a sign read that owners were ' collecting guests from airport and would be back in 15 mins', waited a good half an hour, after which someone walked out of back room to check me in, having been there all along. No cars had entered the car park, and their cars had nit moved.
Room was disgusting, was glad I had my own pillow and duvet in the car as did not feel comfortable using the b and b linen. Room felt dirty, walls filthy, bathroom disgusting. Had booked for two nights but could not face the 2nd and rather than staying endured a 300mile round trip home on the 2nd night!! Seriously.....stay else where!

Booked online to stay here because of its close proximity to Gatwick airport and the price was relatively cheap, however that is where the positives end.
For some unknown reason they refuse to except payment in cash, you can only pay with a credit card. I can understand taking credit card details as a security bond, however I think a customer should still be able to pay on site with cash if that is their preference, if all you have is an international credit card then there are extra expenses involved. Since when did paying 40 pounds in cash become such a problem?

Breakfast is said to be served from 7 - 9 however nothing was available until 7:20, which is a bugger when you have to leave at 7:30 to the airport.
Rubish bins are all over flowing and along with the condition of the rest of the place imply that cleaning is not high on their list of priorities.

Staff are not overly welcoming, the drive from the airport is conducted with the driver talking on his mobile phone the whole way while seemingly attempting to brake speed records and run as many pedestrian crossings as possible.
The rooms are ok, passible for the price, but as an overall package, there is much better value for your money available.
I will not be back, and looking at the other reviews on here, that seems to be the general opinion.

When we arrive at Gatwick after a sleepless overnight flight from the US, we like to check into a room early so that we can sleep until 5 or 6 pm and catch up on our sleep.
I called the Gainesborough Lodge in advance to see if we could check in early, and a Mr Patel said they couldn't guarantee a 10 am check-in but they would do their best to make a room available as soon as possible. However, when we arrived around 10 am the young man who met us said we should go look around Horley or London as he probably wouldn't have anything ready until about 1:00 pm. I said we are extremely tired and would rather nap in their guest lounge, and could he just let us have the first double room he had available. After repeated rude exhortations that we shouldn't expect an early room, especially if we won't check out early the next day, I gave up talking to this agressive man and we went in to the guest lounge.
We settled into the comfortable chairs and tried to doze off, but kept being disturbed by his two rowdy young children who came stomping through, and then by him and his vacuum cleaner.
At about 1 pm he said a room was ready, and as we wrestled our luggage through the narrow stairway and halls we could see that every room had been serviced and was ready for occupancy. He could obviously have given us a room much earlier.
The place is clean and we slept well, breakfast badly cooked, but this surly and rude man ensures we will never, ever, use this guest house again.

Room Tip: Don't arrive before 1 pm. Be prepared to be rudely treated, and don't ask for any favors.
