Have been there several times. First was for an event that was in a lovely room. The hotel is old but has modernised carpets and decor but still kept the charm. Buffet was excellent and entertainment was fantastic. The stairs are old style and very grand. The general atmosphere is grand but homely.

The second time was to visit my parents when they stayed in September 2012. After 11pm the barmen went home to leave a rather greasy looking night porter to serve the bar. We had been there for a couple of hours chatting in the corner and nothing had been said to us about the bar being changed to a residents only bar, not giving us the chance to order our last drink. We asked him kindly could we have a last drink (at around 11.45) because we were not told and would have to wait for a taxi anyway. He obliged but when he started pouring a pint (which we had not actually wanted but were not given the opportunity to change our order to something less) he changed pumps midway and I asked what he was pouring, as it looked like he had went to a different beer. Through gritted teeth he stated in a negative tone what our order had been and glared at us in a way that made us wonder if he was actually going to throw the pint over us.

Such a beautiful hotel and everything was perfect up until that point. Generally the staff are very helpful and friendly but unfortunately this one night porter let the place down on this occasion. I think it would not have been quite so bad had his friend not been propping the bar up all night and was still being served when we left!

Had a family meal for four this Christmas, the service and ambience was lovely but the chef needs some food lessons as the food was undercooked and vegetables were showing signs of being passed thier best by date, what a dissapointment. Avoid.

We stayed at the Golden Lion for three days over Christmas. At reception we found the staff very helpful, efficient and with a pleasant manner. On arrival at our room we were pleased to find it spacious, clean and comfortable. There was plenty of choice at the buffet breakfast. Evening meals were excellent and were served by pleasant staff who were quick and efficient. Our Christmas dinner was exquisite. There was a good choice of menu. The food was of excellent quality. The tables and room were beautifully decorated and the presents and Xmas Crackers were of excellent quality.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas break at this lovely Hotel.

Great hotel
Great staff
Great value
Great food
Superb experience

Spent the Christmas period at the golden lion hotel and loved every minute of it, not a single grumble or gripe or reason not to be cheerful.

P.s staff need training on clearing tables to not drop cutlery and housekeeping need to be worked harder

NB: car park is accessible even though it says no entry and pedestrian zone !!

…to cut a long story short...

**Had to pay for room during check-in rather than checkout - DON'T make this mistake I made – Please read on and judge for yourself….

**Arrived & checked-in OK, Room was tiny and was not executive.

**Spoke to reception and an executive room is one that has been refurbished (painted and looking like a normal room in any other hotel). Changed to another room - just the same.

**WARNING: the nice rooms on the Internet and Hotel web-page are from their Suite (which there is only one at £175).

**If you wanted a drink in the evening at the Hotel Bar, you needed to retrieve the Barman as he was outside smoking and using his mobile phone.

**Only cold water in the bathroom in the morning. The hotel knew about this and the boiler not working for a number of days and did not inform us during check-in.

**Breakfast – just as bad as the above.

**I complained the next morning again where the Hotel refunded £20 for my problems. I was unhappy and asked for the manager, who would phone me the next day.

**Promised from Manager were not upheld. No calls from manager, i called him and promised an additional £30 refund that never happened. Even after phoning him a number of times.
