Visited for lunch with my daughter. After a very tasty starter from the main menu, we ordered battered cod and steak pie from the lunch menu. The very surly waitress brought breaded haddock - when my daughter queried that this was not what she ordered, it was greeted with a shrug and a "that was what you asked for". Her virtually untouched plate was cleared away without comment. Twice the waitress actually walked away whilst we were speaking, and on one occasion actually shouted to us across the restaurant! We then ordered the cheese plate - there must have been at least 8oz of cheese in each portion!! The cheddar was clearly just removed from the packaging and cut in half. Value for money perhaps, but most off putting, to the extent we barely ate any of it. A polite gentleman, who we assume was the manager, kindly wrapped the cheese up in foil for us to take away. £55 for a lunch we hardly touched! Our first, and last visit!

I have stayed here quite a few times, I did not want a full breakfast and I asked if I could have some fruit, YES BUT YOU MUST EAT IT IN THE RESTAURANT !

I politely asked again , could I please have 2 x apples , YES BUT YOU CANNOT TAKE THEM, YOU HAVE TO SIT DOWN AND EAT THEM !

I was shocked! I reported to the reception, the girl shrugged her shoulders ! NEVER AGAIN !

3 X GUEST WERE ALSO SHOCKED AT THIS ""VERY POOR ATTITUDE" !

Held our wedding here Good Friday, 18th April 2014. It was a perfect day, all the hotel staff were wonderful and worked so hard all day. The wedding organiser, June and the manager, Harald were immense and worked extemely hard in the planning and organisation of our day. It is an amazing venue, all the function rooms are lovely, the marriage room in particular is very graceful and well suited for this purpose. Every tiny detail was carefully attended to by all staff. The food was wonderful, drinks reasonably priced. Tom, the duty manager, was professional, polite and attentive at all times. We glided through the whole day without having to worry or think about a single thing, it was all done for us, all we had to do was relax and enjoy the day. All our requests were agreed to, including early access to our rooms on the day and extra changing rooms for the entertainment. Some of our guests stayed overnight and every one was pleased with the accommodation and the breakfast. A first class wedding service in a beautiful hotel, full of character and warmth. The overall cost was very reasonably priced and affordable.

My husband and I enjoyed a three night stay 25-28 May, 2014. Car park ok to find if you follow hotel's instructions, otherwise bit hard to find. Greeted by friendly reception staff and given keys to our third floor room. The room was fine, albeit a bit small, but the shower over the bath was unsuitable for a disability, even more so with no rubber shower mat. However, a quick call to reception meant we were provided with a shower mat, and the promise of a change of room next morning, as the hotel was full that night. We were moved down to second floor in the morning to a nice room with shower cubicle, so all were happy!
Decor of hotel is very, very nice - real Scottish feel,Rabbie Burns prevails, and lots of history attached.
Very nice seating area in reception, cosy little bar too, with friendly staff.
Evening meals very nicely cooked and presented, served by efficient friendly staff. Buffet style breakfast with nice selection of items. However, we were very disappointed to find the hot food items were certainly not hot (plates not very warm either which doesn't help) and food seemed to have been lying for long time. There was a couple of large foreign groups in before us, and it seemed as if the food had been made for them and we were left with the leftovers! As a result we ordered poached eggs and smoked fish from the menu the next morning, as this was made to order, which was slightly better, but I do feel something needs to be done about the temperature of food served at breakfast. At no time did I see anyone check the bain maries for either quantity or temperature of the food. I did leave a message to this effect with reception when we checked out.
Pity Wifi only available in public areas, and surely something can be done about the horrendous amount of pigeons hanging around the hotel!!! Rear walls etc of hotel are in dire need of a clean up due to these birds, and water running from rhone pipes.
We did enjoy our stay in the Golden Lion, which is extremely central with the Thistles Shopping Centre, Railway and Bus Stations more or less on the doorstep.
We hope to return.

My husband and I stayed for one night. The hotel has it's own car park behind the hotel which is good. Staff all very pleasant. Hotel all nicely furnished and has a great seating area in the reception.
Room was good - not big but adequate for what we needed.
Hotel has a good bar and we sat outside - people watching, the seating area is nothing special but is fine to enjoy the warm weather and sun that Scotland does get!
Only complaint was our room was directly above the function room so was very noisy and also we were next to the door which took other guests to their rooms, plus a seating area that guests used at night time.
We spoke to the manager the next day and he was very apologetic, and offered us a discount and possibly an upgrade next time we stayed. We were very happy with that and I am sure we will stay again.
The breakfast buffet was very good too!

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room and definitely not 211 unless you will be partying until the early hours.

After a little search we found the car park but then had to walk into the hotel via the back door which was truly less than impressive. However, opening a door on to the reception was a delightful surprise; it was beautiful with a modern feel using tartan and stone.
The check in staff were very friendly and competent and soon we arrived in our suite. Room number 204 - large, airy and at the back which was quiet. We had a lovely sofa and big tv. You do hear noise from the rooms around you and above, seems the walls are thin but the bed was so comfortable and the suite was clean.

We had dinner in the bar area the night we arrived and the staff couldn't have been nicer. Food was excellent, well priced and the chef made me a special version of the dish I wanted without onions (I have an intolerance to onion). Nice little bar with some excellent whiskies to relax into the evening.

Sadly in the morning the shower water failed to warm up at all and was simply too cold to get into. Breakfast was a buffet style in the main restaurant area. A good selection of cooked food and cereal, fruit, pastries etc. It would have been more pleasant had the plates been clean though.

Beautiful building, comfortable room, breakfast and slap bang in the centre of town - good value.

Room Tip: rooms at the back of the hotel are quieter - away from main street.

stayed here on Sunday. good location efficient and friendly staff very nice breakfast and at 55pounds value for money. however the hotel is let down by a number of factors. the lift is so small and slow as to be virtually useless, my room was small and had what looked like grease stains all over the wall. forget the wi fi it really hardly works at all. also the hotel was full with groups of elderly german and italian guests, so i was so pleased that i got to breakfast first as there was one hell of a bun fight after these two groups decended on the dining room completely overwhelming the service staff. also if you are a pigeon fancier this is the place for you. as there seem to be hundreds of them inhabiting the rear of the hotel and there is no need for an alarm call as the birds ensure that you wake up early.
shame these things distract from an otherwise nice hotel.
