“Pound Stirling”
Reviewed 1 July 2014

We arrived just before the Bannockburn Live and Armed Forces Day celebrations, and enjoyed our stay of 4 nights. Reception was welcoming and efficient, and our en-suite room was spacious and clean, apart from a small bag of rubbish overlooked (presumably) after cleaning the room following the previous occupancy! Also, one of the wardrobe's 2 sliding doors was immoveable and had to be taken out! The bed was comfortable and we slept well (except when pigeons on the roof were audible in the early hours)!

Meals were very good quality and sufficient, always served in good time with excellent presentation by cheerful staff, who were also assiduous in removing crockery and cutlery from each course in turn. One exception was our final breakfast, when tables remained uncleared as guests arrived, due it seemed to insufficient staff.

Wifi was provided free in reception, and worked well. Decor was reasonable and the reception area interesting and comfortable.

Two niggles. One was the lift, which usually took a seemingly interminable time to arrive, and although supposedly having room for 7 people, 4 would have been a crush, especially with luggage. This did however encourage us to take more exercise by climbing and descending the stairs! Secondly, both entry to and exit from the car park - controlled by a single barrier with one-way traffic only possible - usually involved a significant time delay. Pushing the 'call' button rarely produced a quick response, and a situation frequently developed where drivers were waiting/queuing to both enter directly from the road, and to leave, simultaneously. You can imagine the difficulty and frustration that sometimes ensued.

Stayed here for one night June 2014. We were unaware it was the armed forces celebration day so there were people everywhere. Room was small but quiet. Loved the old period character of the place. Restaurant staff excellent. There was some function on in the evening and there were about 10 kids running full pelt around reception/ stairs area which was annoying. Also wifi only available in public areas not rooms. Comfy bed and hot showers. Fantastic location. Parking difficult to locate from the instructions given

Don't know where to start ... Just all round bad .... Don't go !

Terrible service, noisy location and shabby room. Had to run around in the shower to try to get wet ... Shower leaks all over the floor .. No air con and the window was broken so could not be opened ... Shocking !

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

The reception staff was surly. When checking in, we asked for a quiet room and they snapped that we had the very last room in the hotel and nothing could be done. When we saw the room, we understood why they were so defensive. The room was small, depressing, facing the back alley, and the mattresses were crunchy and horrible. There was a used towel still hanging from the knob in the bathroom. Every time you ran the sink or flushed the toilet, the water gurgled up into the bathtub. We had drinks in the bar after having dinner at the lovely Stirling Highland Hotel (I would stay there next time) and two silverfish ran up shoulder of my companion. Need I say more?

Room Tip: Go elsewhere. At age 58, we were the youngest people in the place. I can only imagine that sentiment...

Visited for lunch with my daughter. After a very tasty starter from the main menu, we ordered battered cod and steak pie from the lunch menu. The very surly waitress brought breaded haddock - when my daughter queried that this was not what she ordered, it was greeted with a shrug and a "that was what you asked for". Her virtually untouched plate was cleared away without comment. Twice the waitress actually walked away whilst we were speaking, and on one occasion actually shouted to us across the restaurant! We then ordered the cheese plate - there must have been at least 8oz of cheese in each portion!! The cheddar was clearly just removed from the packaging and cut in half. Value for money perhaps, but most off putting, to the extent we barely ate any of it. A polite gentleman, who we assume was the manager, kindly wrapped the cheese up in foil for us to take away. £55 for a lunch we hardly touched! Our first, and last visit!

I have stayed here quite a few times, I did not want a full breakfast and I asked if I could have some fruit, YES BUT YOU MUST EAT IT IN THE RESTAURANT !

I politely asked again , could I please have 2 x apples , YES BUT YOU CANNOT TAKE THEM, YOU HAVE TO SIT DOWN AND EAT THEM !

I was shocked! I reported to the reception, the girl shrugged her shoulders ! NEVER AGAIN !

3 X GUEST WERE ALSO SHOCKED AT THIS ""VERY POOR ATTITUDE" !

Held our wedding here Good Friday, 18th April 2014. It was a perfect day, all the hotel staff were wonderful and worked so hard all day. The wedding organiser, June and the manager, Harald were immense and worked extemely hard in the planning and organisation of our day. It is an amazing venue, all the function rooms are lovely, the marriage room in particular is very graceful and well suited for this purpose. Every tiny detail was carefully attended to by all staff. The food was wonderful, drinks reasonably priced. Tom, the duty manager, was professional, polite and attentive at all times. We glided through the whole day without having to worry or think about a single thing, it was all done for us, all we had to do was relax and enjoy the day. All our requests were agreed to, including early access to our rooms on the day and extra changing rooms for the entertainment. Some of our guests stayed overnight and every one was pleased with the accommodation and the breakfast. A first class wedding service in a beautiful hotel, full of character and warmth. The overall cost was very reasonably priced and affordable.
