“Amazing Trip! Relaxing, understated luxury for a brilliant price!”
Reviewed 21 January 2011

My partner and myself booked to stay at Cropton Cabins the first week of January 2011. I had stayed in cabins before but never with Forest Holidays. We paid £180 for a 4 night mid-week break and whilst this seemed like excellent value my expectations were not too high, especially having seen some of the reviews on here.

I could not believe it when we arrived. The site is 1/2 a mile down a small track road and very much in the middle of nowhere. The check in is 4pm (note this down as we automatically thought it would be 3pm but otherwise it was very efficient.

The cabins are very spacious for just 2 people. We stayed in a Silver Birch 4 person cabin. The underfloor heating was amazing! Large open plan lounge and full size bedrooms. The master has a wetroom and the family bathroom has a full size bath. There was a basket full of board games which was a lovely touch.

The hot tub was cleaned daily and you can use it at any time of the day. It was snowy when we were there and sitting in the hot tub in the snow was a delightful experience. (a little tip, you can turn the tv round and put the subtitles on and watch tv from the tub!).

Cannot recommend enough The New Inn at Cropton!

I will definately stay with forest holidays again.

Well we stayed here for a 4 night break I had booked over a year ago in the Forrest holidays annual sale (around october time) so I am partially basing my ratings on teh fact we paid less than £150 for this break teh week before Christmas which i though was amazing value.

Firstly problems:-
Well there was extreme weather when we arrived of -12 temperatures and teh mains water had burst near the entrance to the site. tanker of water had been delivered but connections were (obviously) all frozen. We were sent to very nice New Inn pub for complimentary refreshments and the site manager tunred up to keep us updated as his team were working on unfreezing the connections. they also laid on a free hot meal for everyone which was much appreciated after our long journey. Within and hour and half or so all was apparently well and we drove back to the cabins and checked in and got kids settled. A problem yes, but dealt with very well and in very difficult weather conditions.

The freezing pipe problem reared its head a couple more times that week but we weren't really inconvenienced that much to be honest. just one day we used the supplied bottled water and couldn't shower or overly use the toilet until the late afternoon.

As far as the cabins themselves - well these really do desrve a 5* rating as they are fresh (new in 2009) and contemporarily decorated and lovely and warm with underfloor heating throughout. A well fitted luxury kitchen and lcd TV/DVD combo finished off the lounge.kitchen areas, and the ensuite wet room with lovely shower as well as a full family bathroom really did complete the interior.

Outside there is a good size verandah, one side with table and chairs (probably not much use for our time of year!) and the other side with the lovely large 5 seater hot tub overlooking the forest. Sitting in this with snow falling around you as squirrels, grouse and robins go about their work is just pretty special, especially with a pint of the local Cropton Brewery Ale in your hand!

The site itself is a good size and cabins are set all around the edge of the site with the verandah's facing the forest. There are more cabins I am guessing to be added as time goes on. the camping part of the site is in the middle and lower fields and I would imagine in the summer get quite busy as quite a large site. in winter not such an issue so your views from the front of the cabin )out of the main bedroom) is lovely with snow covered fields and trees

If travelling in mid winter the site is situated a couple of miles north of Cropton viilage and therefore a good 3 mile or so from the main A170. The area is of course known for being hilly and so make sure your car can cope. Winter tyres are ideal and got me round no problems in some seriously low temperatures and quite a lot of ground lying snow on site. If you haven't got proper tyres then get some snow snocks or chains if you are worried about yor car coping

Plenty of forest walks and a good outside play area complete the picture witha small shop on site selling essentials and you can pre ordr fresh cooked pastries/bread the day before. Pickering is about 7 miles away and has a good sized Coop for all your shopping needs aswell as some nice tea shops and of course the start of the NYMR for that special steam train journey

A wonderful place for us and we have already rebooked for next year (not in the sale unfortunately!)

I recently stayed in the Birch cabins with my wife and two friends. The cabins were spotless and had all 'mod cons'.We all enjoyed ourselves, and a very restful few days. There were a few minor niggles though.1 there was no where to dry our towels,2 the top 6ft of the window in our bedroom was not covered by the curtain,so from first light we were awake,3 the hot tub on the decking would have been better if the canopy had covered all the tub not just a third of it,I know we are sat in warm water, but it'snot the same with rain in your face!(we have been in a hot tub outside that was covered when it was snowing, and that was wonderful).saying that it is a great base to visit the Moors and the Coast,(which we did). With a bit of tweaking on the above comments, and with better weather than we had it would be perfect.

Compared to Forest Holidays other sites eg Keldy, we were disappointed. Cabins very close to each other which meant not much privacy whilst in the hot tub, reserved cabin 9 on the advice of the company as we requested a more private veranda, unfortunately we were only feet from neighbouring cabins veranda's, on either side. If you haven't stayed at Forest Holidays other sites you may find this ok, however bear in mind this is actually a camp site and the cabins are dotted along just behind the caravans and tents, not acutally in the forest, more of an open field. We had also paid for early check in but our cabin wasn't ready.

Where should I start? From the moment we arrived, we had our suspicions about this place. We camped here a few months previously and enjoyed our stay. It seems something has changed since then.

We drove up to the entrance of the site and were greeted by hanging baskets that would have been better suited to a Tim Burton film. Petrified flowers and dead plants were a fine start to our stay. Welcome to Forest Holidays!

The staff at reception on arrival were unhelpful and even rude to us, with one person even remarking on how the staff kept leaving and how long the hours were. Hardly the welcome we were expecting!

We were taken to our cabin by a particularly aloof member of staff and briefly shown the tatty delights of the frankly tired cabin. I certainly didn't feel like it was the luxury that we had been promised.

The crowning glory was the human excrement and toilet paper that was spewing merrily from the drain-cover outside. This was reported to the site manager, Nick (?) who promptly ignored it an went back to the obviously more important paperwork.

The sewage remained outside the cabin for the duration of the stay. (4 days!)They certainly created a memorable experience in the forest. For all the wrong reasons.

Never never again will I give these people our money. I advise you to stay well clear!

Just returned from Cropton Cabins. Cabins well appointed, hot tub brilliant! A few problems. Arrived a few minutes before four and cabin not ready, awaiting cleaning. When we did get in they'd obviously rushed this. Basics had been done but floors dirty, surfaces dusty and windows manky. Spent the first hour sweeping, mopping, dusting and wiping worst of muck off windows. Could have stayed at home and done that! We'd ordered groceries online thru the Forest Holiday website, alleged computer problems meant we didn't get these. To be fair the guy who checked us in very kindly said he'd go shopping for us when he'd finished but we just ended up cobbling Friday night's dinner together from what they had available from the Forest retreat shop. We'd ordered towels and robes, these too weren't available, computer gremlins again.

Once these few teething problems over, we did have a lovely stay. Recommend the New Inn Cropton and the Fox and Hounds Sinnington for meals out. Both excellent and good value.
