We have just stayed for 5 nights at the White Swan in a hideaway room in their annex. The room was very large with an enormous comfy bed, and was great for a stay with a dog. The staff were all very helpful and friendly and the breakfasts excellent. We ate two meals there and preferred the ambiance of the front room by the bar to the normal dinning room. In terms of cons, we thought the the hotel and food were expensive, although probably not much more than similar places around. The food was nice but, £22- £25 for a steak, when I had similar at a friends golf club on the way there for £7.95 is a bit much for me. Although the staff were great the service could be a bit slow at busy times. Also a small hick- up with the bill, where they charged for the dog per night, rather than for the stay, was also cheerfully and quickly put right. A trip on the North York railway and to Robin Hood bay is a must if you come this area. Also Castle Howard and Dalby Forest are good days out.

Room Tip: Hideaway rooms are great for pets and you can take them into the bar and front room to eat & dri...

Hi we arrived here on the Saturday and the room was ready at 3. The room was fine, overlooking next doors wine bar. The room was clean and standard. We didn't eat here for either breakfast or an evening meal so I cannot comment, there are plenty of places around to go. We booked the hotel minibus to take us to the concert. That evening upon our return, the window was open due to the heat the noise was very loud from the next door wine bar and was disturbing. I'm not sure I would go back especially for the cost. The manager was very helpful though as I left my telephone charger she did post it on to me.

Room Tip: We had room 4 which overlooked the wine bar, friends we met had an outbuilding which looked much bet...

Our second visit to Pickering but the first to the White Swan Inn, courtesy of a gift from our children ! Arriving early enabled us to get a parkng space in the Inn's car park (although it is quite large) before embarking on a trip on the North Yorks railway to Grosmont pulled by Sir Nigel Gresley under steam .We were a day early for the 70's weekend special, although we saw plenty of customers in appropriate outfits the following morning.
The welcome at the White Swan was warm and coupled with tea and coffee in the small lounge overlooking the High Street. The Inn is very old with narrow corridors, lots of steps and no lift but there are some more accessible rooms in converted outbuildings. The rooms are comfortable with modern en-suite facilities and free wi-fi. Rooms overlooking theHigh Street are noisier but more activity to enjoy.
The package included dinner and breakfast, the former was excellent : well presented dishes, served by friendly, attentive staff, and very tasty food from local producers and suppliers. The only minor flaw at breakfast was the absence of marmite from the buffet selection; I am sure that this will have been corrected by now !
The Inn was decorated temporarily with a yellow bicycle in anticipation of Le Tour de France and Le Grand Depart in Yorkshire. Our departure was not grand but regretted as we had thoroughly enjoyed our brief return to "God's own country"......we will be back.

We did stay here a couple of years previous but this year we got the best room in the house! Fantastic split level room outside the hotel but no trouble to us. We booked the mini bus to and from the concert which was superbly organised by the hotel and even managed steak & salad before we left! Our barman/host for the night was George. Fantastic local guy who looked after us 100% all night! Sad to hear he was off travelling but he deserves everything, charming well mannered and funny guy a credit to the white swan and his family!
Looking forward to our revisit

Having never spent time in North Yorkshire we thought we would have a couple of nights to ride the North Yorkshire steam railway to Whitby and explore the local area. The White Swan is ideally located for this, being a five minute walk from the Pickering station.
The hotel itself does the basics well - the room in the hotel was fine, the restaurant food and choice good, although the restaurant itself lacks character.
The bar is quite nice although a little small.
Overall we had a good experience, although it is pricey compared to other places we have stayed.
The only downside was that we were woken by the emptying of bottles from the wine bar next door, and the staff seemed to be stretched so service was not the best when people were wanting drinks.

We have just spent 3 nights at the White Swan and had a lovely time. It was our 2nd visit and it was just as good 2nd time around. We have a little dog which is why we chose the hotel originally and we returned because we enjoyed it so much. We had a hideaway room which was very comfortable and very clean- comfy bed and modern bathroom with lovely fluffy towels. The staff at this hotel were charming with no exceptions which is rare and they were so kind to our dog , we felt very welcome. We had two evening meals in the lounge area - sat in the window table so we could watch the world go by and both evenings thoroughly enjoyed our food - we sat in the lounge so our dog could be with us . Pickering is quaint and my husband likes the location of the hotel as it is only a 5 min walk to the station where all the steam trains run.

Room Tip: The hideaway rooms are lovely

A warm and friendly Yorkshire welcome awaits you at this proper family run Inn. Next year will be our 30th at The White Swan and we have just about got things organised. From the moment you walk through the doors you'll feel at home. We aim to keep things simple and just let you relax ...Tom Parker Bowles reckons 'Every market town should have a White Swan' and the Daily Telegraph described us as 'God's own Country Pub' on a recent visit. If you read the reviews here you will get a flavour of what we are trying to do. We are an Inn with a lovely restaurant and 2 rosette food but not the plastic fine dining you find in many four star properties. Real food, real people, lovely rooms and great value for money. And by the way if you are not delighted I will give you your money back so long as you tell us at the time.Victor Buchanan - Owner ... more   less
