We booked the hotel as its close to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Station, our room was roomy with good facilities although there was no safe for valuables. However because of the warm weather the room was unbelievably hot although the hotel had provided an electric fan. we would have opened the windows but for the large number of flies that inhabit the hotel and surrounding area. It would have been nice to see some attempt at controlling these by using the devices one sees in restaurants but none were in evidence anywhere in the hotel and that includes the restaurant. We ended up buying a fan to add to the room to try and improve things but the room remained hotter than it was outside.

After a very hot night we went for breakfast in the hotel restaurant and once again there were flies everywhere. At the buffet table items like jam and yogurt were covered up but we could not bring our selves to chance eating food that had been walked over by flies. We ate sealed cereal and ate breakfast elsewhere for the rest of our time in Pickering and the same for dinner.

Not a hotel to recommend, if you go to Pickering be prepared for the flies and stay somewhere else. stay somewhere else

I am really sorry to read your review. We have been inundated by cluster flies over the last two weeks and this is not a reflection on the cleanliness of White Swan but on our stunning 'country' location and the time of year. We have taken the following measures to control them: Flyscreens or muslin nets on windows and doors, atomisers (Lampe Bergers burning a special repellent). Our kitchens and food preparation areas were already equipped with regulation UV lights and fly traps. We believe that there was never a food hygene issue but accept that the presence of flies is off-puting. There is no longer a problem but it has been a challenge and we are sorry that it affected your experience of our hotel. You are visitors from USA and perhaps you expect aircon in rooms but that is not normal in the UK for an Inn - it is something of a bonus to have really nice weather here but when the temperature gets into the high 20s then it is true to say we are not that well prepared if the provision of large electric fans isn't enough to alleviate the problem. Had you raised your discomfort with us at the time we would have done everything we could to have helped recover your experience of the White Swan.

Found the hotel to be very friendly, accommodating and very clean. Very charming. Good food. Stayed 2 nights. Agree with that flies were a problem in the bar area. The staff were attentive and courteous.

Thank you for your kind review. We were temporalily caught-out by the cluster flies and happily they have all gone and thanks for being measured about the issue on here. I do hope you will come back soon.

This has so many great things going for - its location in a charming Yorkshire town, pleasant staff who are so helpful, well equipped and spacious bedrooms (well, ours was) and good food. And yet. There are also negative things and I'll do them first. A previous reviewer mentioned the flies and s/he wasn't kidding. They are everywhere and the staff seem unable to deal with them. Principally, they are in the restaurant which made breakfast a bit of an ordeal. They're in the bar - we beat a hasty retreat outside when constantly bothered by them. They are also in the rooms but we borrowed a fan from the management and this seemed to keep them down. Another problem is the noisy next door wine bar. Both nights I was woken up by their staff having shouty conversations outside and I was told that at weekends there are often complaints about the music from there. I also agree that the dining room with its relentlessly low and patterned ceiling is a bit claustrophobic. The positives are good, though. Our room overlooked the high street and was more like a small suite with a sofa, TV etc. downstairs and a large bedroom up. The bathroom is OK though I always prefer a separate shower to one over the bath. Food was excellent - I had kedgeree for breakfast, always a treat, and was impressed by the way in which staff dealt with large numbers. Dinner was fine, too and I had no issues with the Ginger Pig meats. The inn has a sister deli next door selling great Yorkshire produce and GPig meats.

We have also tried to address the issue of noise from our neighbours. Sorry you don't like the decor in the restaurant but that is down to personal taste. Lots of people feel differently. We do hope that you will come back and give us a chance to build on the otherwise positive things in your kind review.

Dinner bed and breakfast: Charming staff in a building that certainly looks the part of an old coaching inn. The welcome was warm, the decorations were pleasant and on the surface all looked well. However on second glance it was apparent that the whole place seems to be in need of a fundamental deep cleaning as the floors and the carpets are grimy and, in the case of the front bar, noticeably smelly. The presence of flies through out the eating and drinking areas in the evening tended to confirm and at breakfast the cereal and fruit buffet was covered in the things. Dinner was fine if not overwhelming but the famous Ginger Pig meats at breakfast had clearly been cooked much earlier and kept in the oven or under heat lamps; as a result the bacon and black pudding were dry and rinded while the sausage was suspiciously aromatic and the toast was completely dried out. One particular complaint about the bedrooms (otherwise decently outfitted) was that the kitchen extractor fans dump their smells into the main alley which has the bedroom windows for the old part of the inn, and that the fans were left switched on and howling all night.

Room Tip: Book away from the extractor fans

I'm deeply troubled by your review. But first things first. It is true that for a period of about ten days we have been plagued by cluster flies. We have gradually done more and more and more to try to eradicate the problem (without making the place look terrible) and fortunately they have now gone as quickly as they arrived. Cluster flies are common in this part of the world at this time of year and there occurrence is absolutely nothing to do with cleanliness. Your insinuation that a glance at the carpets and floors reveals any grime whatsoever or that you can actually smell it is simply not true. Our hotel is as clean as a whistle. This place is staffed by real people who pride themselves on their jobs and your comments are truly injurious to any motivation they might have to serve people just like you. Would you rather be attended by the unmotivated, inattentive and untrained because that is where the hospitality industry will end up thanks to reviews like this that seek to exaggerate and manipulate? You will find that far from being suspicious, the reason Ginger Pig sausages are aromatic is because they are made with real pork and very little else.

I had booked this hotel as a 2 night getaway for me and my husband after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor. We were certainly not disappointed as the hotel looked exactly like the photos on the website.
From the moment we arrived we were made to feel very welcome and the staff were lovely and extremely helpful. We were shown to our room within a few minutes and were told where everything was in the hotel and in our room.
I had booked the 'Superior Vintage' Room with the 'Louis XV super king-size bed' (this really was a big bed)!!! When you first walk into the room there is a decent size living room with TV, coffe table, sofa and wardrobe, adjacent to this room as the lovely bathroom with bath, overhead shower, toilet, sink and complete with candles (nice touch) and toiletries etc.
You then go up 4 or 5 stairs to the very large bedroom where it did look very regal.
Both the living room and bedroom overlook the main street, however you don't really notice any noise from the street at night.
My only negative with this room (which may have just been that we were unlucky that night), we had very noisy neighbours in the room above!
It sounded like they were just walking up and down the room constantly most of the night and then from 6.00am in the morning the footsteps did not stop at all. I did have a look up to the next floor to see where the footsteps were coming from and it was deffinitely in the room above and not from the corridor.
As we had little or no sleep that night and this resorted to my husband hitting the ceiling of our room, eventually I had had enough and went down to reception.
The lady at reception was lovely and said she would look into this. I was also offered a free bottle of champagne for our trouble, which I declined as I really just wanted some sleep and do not like complaining about anything.
Later that day I spoke to another extremely helpful lady at reception who said they would maybe ask the other guests to be a bit more considerate and that we would get a small discount off our room when we checked out the next day.
Obviously I was just pleased that this had been dealt with so quickly, however at teatime that day we received a call to the room offering a transfer of rooms to the Hideaway Treat room (not part of the main hotel).
We jumped at the chance to go as we just wanted a decent nights sleep. This room is more like an apartment and I wish I had booked this from the beginning, it is gorgeous. If you are looking for a romantic stay - then this is the room for you. His and hers overhead showers in a wet room downstairs. A stand alone bath in the room downstairs. Upstairs is the bedroom with with TV, wine and glasses, dressing table, mini bar and doors that open inwards with a secure metal veranda.
This room was absolutely perfect and so lovely and quiet - I would certainly stay here again.

The staff at this hotel are all very helpful, friendly, approachable and really welcoming.

This is a hotel mainly for couples I would say and in some rooms you can also take your dogs (I may take my labrador next time).

A lovely hotel, great staff, nice little bar, perfect location - Thank you for being so helpful.

Pickering is a small market town at the end of the North Yorks Moors railway line. There's not much to do when you get there, quick visit to the castle and a mooch around the shops so a pit stop here on the High St for a drink is a good idea as it looks like the best show in town. Nicely decorated little front bar, good beer, lovely selection of wine, good tea and coffee.

My new husband and I stayed at The White Swan Inn as part of our honeymoon and we would like to express our delight at our hideaway cottage, which has a lounge (with a huge bath) a bathroom downstairs and the bedroom upstairs. The hideaway was very quiet and there is a nice area outside with a bistro table and chairs which we took advantage of the sunny weather. The staff were all very helpful and friendly. The restaurant was good and a had a varied menu. The breakfast was also very good with my only gripe being the toast was not quite "toasted" enough for us.

Room Tip: The Hideaway Treat was very special with a large bath tub for sharing.
