We made a return visit to this lovely traditional tearoom which has a wonderful cosy atmosphere run by a genuinely nice family. The homely decor consists of small round tables with pretty tablecloths Service is at the table with china teapots, cups and knitted poppies in vases is quirky and fun. The tearoom has lots of hand knitted flowers and garments and wool around. The owner serves delicious cakes and scones or light lunches all reasonable priced, if you want to just sit, chat and relax without being hurried this is the place. Relaxing and very friendly with a knitting club if you want to bring your needles along. Our return visit after four years and it was just a quaint and lovely / Lincolnshire couple

Poppies is a bit like the North Yorkshire Moors Railway- it preserves something of the past whilst offering excellent service.
Inside there is a cosy traditional feel, with small round tables decked with lovely old tablecloths, service is at the table, and welcoming but not over friendly.
The best thing about the cafe is the way they have left the double shop front in its original style. It still has the name of the jewellers on the door, and the window furniture has been left just as it had been when it was a shop premises.
Outside, should you need it, there is a charming and unique toilet entirely made of wood, but to describe it as a shed (as I heard someone so doing) would do it a disservice.
I can't comment too much on the food as we were keen to have a speedy lunch and see the castle before getting back on the train, so the tuna jacket potato was just right and served promptly.
I would recommend this cafe as it seemed to fit in with the nostalgic theme of the day and presents good English food with excellent service.

We popped in here for a cup of tea and what a joy. A little old fashioned teashop with homemade cakes (and a knitting club on the side!!) We had never heard of Yorkshire Brack, but you must go there to try it as it is very tasty. The staff were very homely and chatty (one family) and we had a nice little break and a laugh. We recommend this cafe to everyone.

A little off the beaten track which in a tourist town like Pickering is no bad thing. The reason we went looking for Poppies was the promise of gluten free food and the tearoom did not disappoint.

Like most tourists on the day, we had arrived on the N Yorkshire Moors Railway, and this of course meant a huge influx of people to the town all at once. Poppies provided an escape, perhaps its rather unassuming façade puts off the more boisterous element of the travelling public, but inside you will find good honest food, excellently prepared and served and a delightful selection of locals also visiting to provide that unattainable feeling of being part of something.

Worth a visit................oh and I agree with the review of GandA2013..........it has the most unique toilet, but nothing to be scared of !
