Owner description: The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is one of the world’s greatest heritage railway experiences with thrills and education at its heart. Climb on-board a steam or heritage diesel train on one of the earliest and most historic lines. Experience 24 miles of Yorkshire’s amazing scenery at this must-see visitor attraction. We will take you on a journey you can’t even imagine! Explore the Railway • Pickering Station is a must-see 1930’s themed station that will transport you back in time to the locomotive steam era. • A must-see is the celebrity station, Goathland, which became Hogsmeade Station in the first Harry Potter film. • Explore Grosmont Station which is home to the operating and engineering world of the NYMR. If you are lucky you might be able to catch a sneaky peak at the work taking place on our engines! • Visit Whitby with its narrow streets and bustling harbour overlooked by the striking ruins of Whitby Abbey. • Explore Levisham Station which is surrounded by the North York Moors.

Today we went from Pickering to Whitby and back with one stopover at Grosmont.
All the Stations along the route were done up beautifully with great attention to detail.
The trains came straight out of old movie sets.
Some parts of the scenery were almost too pretty to be real.
The relatively leisurely pace made this a very relaxing 90 minute journey.
Strongly recommend.

We were booked to visit the Whitby area on a long weekend cottage break, and we were going to be joined by my parents - when i looked for things to do when they were with us i came across a Steam Engine driving experience, my dad was an engine fireman back in the day, so i booked it. What a day he had, he loved every minute and was looked after by all concerned. to get as much picture as possible we ended up chasing the train from station to station but everywhere we saw enthusiasts watching and enjoying their trips, the organisation that we saw and the dedication from the staff whether volunteers or paid was abundantly clear, well done to all, and well worth it if you get the chance!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your Dad's footplate experience with us.

Our footplate courses, which are available throughout the year, offer the chance to experience the thrill of the footplate whilst travelling through the North York Moors. More details can be found on our website.

We are pleased your Dad enjoyed his experience and we will pass his comments onto the crew and staff concerned.

Thank you again for your review and we hope you visit us again soon.

I took my 2 boys on a one-way trip Whitby from Pickering during the Easter weekend. It was wonderful to step aboard the old carriages, watching the beautiful scenery pass by, powered by an old steam train. It was like stepping back in time and little touches like the old-style conductor with his ticket puncher really added to the experience,

It was disappointing however, to find that the steam engine was changed out for a diesel locomotive at our penultimate station, which spoiled the trip for 2 reasons - the amount of time taken to make the change and the fumes which filled the carriage for the final leg of our journey,

I must admit to have immediately felt a touch disappointed when my partner announced a surprise trip to Whitby on the NYMR for my 30th. I have no interest in trains and am adverse to public transport so was wondering where she had got the idea from. My pessimism could not have been more misplaced. The entire journey there and back was fantastic and I could not refrain from spending a large amount of time with my head out the window! We went first class and the seats were comfortable, the staff were excellent and the trip was simply brilliant in every way. Apart from the weather but I can't knock any marks off for that! I couldn't recommend this highly enough

A wonderful railway! Magnificent steam locomotives take you across the moors in the comfort of the beautifully restored coaches. Listening to the locomotives climbing up to Goathland is really something. A fireman's job is tough enough without the 1 in 49 gradient. It's a magnificent reminder of our history and heritage and it's still a great way to get about the moors. A must see if you are in the area!
