We stayed here twice about thirty years ago and then moved away. Now we are back in God's own county we thought we would return for a weekend break. It is just as good! The staff may have changed but are still delightfully friendly, the food is excellent, both breakfasts and dinner in the restaurant, and the beer from WoldTop brewery splendid. We stayed in room 1 for £90.00 a night, lovely big room with very comfortable large bed, at the back of the hotel overlooking the gardens so very quiet. Excellent centre for walking in beautiful countryside. The Rural Museum in Hutton le Hole is well worth a visit, we were lucky to catch it on a rural craft day and spent several hours there. We will certainly be staying at the Blacksmiths again.

We stayed here for two nights as part of a short break. Our room was very nice although a bit hot. The staff were wonderful and went the extra mile to be helpful. We will definitely be back! The food in the restaurant was excellent for both breakfast and dinner. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Our stay at the Blacksmiths lasted 3 nights so we tested out all aspects of the Inn and the verdict is 'highly recommended'.
As a location to visit the Moors national park it is an excellent base. Views from the patio are spectacular. Lots of walks are not far away up in the Moors and forests and nearby Pickering is a good jumping off point as well.
We found the owner very helpful, and knowledgeable of the area. The staff were unfailing friendly and helpful. Food was interesting and very well prepared. Quantities were generous for hungry walkers.
The Inn is historic, true to local architecture and very comfortable.

Room Tip: The showers may be a bit tricky so get the temperature right before you step in. Ask for a room wit...

Arriving mid evening we dropped our bags and went straight down to the restaurant. We stood there for five minutes without any sign of staff. Having waited far too long I had to go to the kitchen to see, through the porthole in the door, the waitress, back to the door, chatting to whoever. Having finally gained her attention she came into the restaurant. Her attitude sucked. They had stopped serving in the restaurant and could we go through to the public bar to eat. Well unless they had two kitchens and staff, and bearing in mind as she said this, main meals were only just coming out of the kitchen, we said no. Why should we go through to the bar to be served food cooked in the same kitchen. How long does it take to lay two basic place settings. We paid £80 for B&B and I wont eat in a pub when I’m paying restaurant prices. She insisted that they had stopped serving in there, so we insisted she got the manager. To say we were made to feel like an inconvenience rather than welcome, paying guests is an understatement. Then just to make her point she proceeded to tell us that the menu was now limited to pies, or fish and chips. It was all I could do not to get up, walk out, pack my backs and leave. After eating a typical microwaved, bone-dry crusted pie and mushy veg, no gravy, no asking if we wanted any condiments etc, we went through to the bar for a drink. After a while I had to get up and ask the guy behind the bar to change the same single whiney track that had played on the cd repeatedly since we arrived. He was clearly not there. Talk about a lack of atmosphere. On leaving the following morning and paying our bill there was none of the usual 'Hope you enjoyed your stay with us, hope to see you again soon' chat. Which is probably as well because I would have told her exactly how bad they were. I think someone should explain to them the meaning of the word HOSPITALITY and what that industry is all about, and give them a customer service-training course, then again!!!

Lousy place, lousy staff. Best avoided

3 years ago we had one night at the Blacksmiths as a stop over on the way back home from the Outer Hebrides. We promised then that we would return and we finally did. We booked and then had to rearrange our stay for different nights. This was handled very efficiently in one short phone call. We were greeted enthusiastically and all the usual formalities were soon completed.

Dinner was fabulous: the food was delicious and served very well by a young, friendly and courteous staff. The night was comfortable and breakfast again was delicious served by a new staff of equally young and enthusiastic staff.

We fell into a routine which was both efficient and relaxed. The hotel is set in a beautiful area with lovely views. The only slight disappointment was that we couldn't find any short rural walks other than along the roads.

We spent our days in the North York Moors in beautiful scenery perfectly complemented by the Blacksmiths. A lovely holiday.

Room Tip: Apparently lower number rooms have showers as well as baths.

We visited early evening yesterday and had the roast of the day and sirloin steak, washed down by an excellent bottle of Malbec. The roast was good value and quality, the steak was excellent and competitively priced as was the wine. The ambiance was pleasant and restaurant spotless. Service was prompt and courteous and serving staff all had a smile. We are here for a week and will certainly return.
