Just had a very enjoyable weekend at this hotel: good size car park, well appointed rooms, old world charm within the hotel itself. Excellent breakfast with many choices, they make a very good cup of tea. There is evening dining if you wish, restaurant has a very good menu with varied choices. Bar meals available, well stocked bar. The staff are friendly & helpful, standard of housekeeping is excellent. I would recommend room 14,with its step in shower in a very good sized bathroom. Lots of wildlife to see and photograph. Local areas good for sightseeing such as Pickering, Whitby, Rosedale Abbey. We visited Eden camp nr Malton and spent a very informative and full afternoon there. I highly recommend The Blacksmiths
.

Room Tip: select room 14 for comfort and step in shower. even though its on the front very little traffic nois...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. The manager gave us a really warm welcome and the staff were quick to attend to our needs and very friendly . The food was excellent. Consequently we ate in every night. Our room was clean, spacious and tasteful. It was lovely to sit on the patio overlooking the orchard and watch the birds and rabbits from our armchairs. This place is definitely somewhere to unwind and get away from it all. The building has plenty of character which adds to the charm of the place, as do the wonderful views of the moors.

We spent a lovely weekend in the North Yorks Moors staying at the hotel. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the staff were tremendous. What needs looking at is the management of the hotel which to our eyes, was lacking in a few areas. We would like to point out a few of them which if taken up could make this good hotel an even better one.
1 The hotel lacks 'kerb appeal' with its weed infested borders and paths. A quick half hour with a trowel could sort that one out
2 The bar area lacks atmosphere - its spartan and unwelcoming. The bar itself could do with a complete overhaul. The area is one of the hubs of the hotel but we didnt feel llke lingering around in it
3 Why is it the lights are kept on on all day even when the sun shines in? We left our room with the lights off, but we arrived back (4.50 in the afternoon) to find something akin to the 'Blackpool illuminations' with all the lights on. Even corridors where the sun shone through, all the lights were on. Think of the hundreds even thousands of pounds which could be saved if they were turned off
4 Breakfast was understaffed. On the first morning we had one member of staff on duty for a full hotel. We had a 50 minute wait for our cooked breakfast.to arrive Food ran out at the help yourself section - and the mantra of 'never leave the restaurant empty handed' could be instilled into staff. We mentioned it to the receptionist who told us the other member of staff had called in sick. Surely its a management duty to sort that hiccup out. As we're patient types it didnt worry us but i bet you some would get very uppity very quickly if this situation is left to fester.
Dont get me wrong, we enjoyed our stay very much and we really want the hotel to achieve its potential which at the moment its not due to a lacklustre management style, An OFSTED report would say, 'NOTICE TO IMPROVE.'

Room Tip: Take your own cups/mugs as the the ones in the room are very small.

Just got back from a lazy weekend at the Blacksmiths Arms. From the moment we arrived, staff were very friendly and helpful, and the ground floor room we stayed in was roomy with all of the facilities you would normally expect and very clean. French doors open to look out at the well kept gardens, lots of rabbits running around and birds singing happily away. These rooms are slightly more expensive but well worth it for anyone wanting to have the option of your own garden!

We ate in the restaurant for two evenings, the quality of service and the food was excellent. Our first night in the restaurant was a new menu. Great choices for meat, fish and veggie with a good selection of wines too. All presented very well, locally sourced ingredients and cooked to perfection. I'm more of a cheese fan but the sticky toffee pudding was the signature pudding and did not disappoint, it was superb! The waitresses had an uncanny knack of knowing exactly when you needed them and did not crowd you when you didnt.

Breakfast was included in our room rate and was the normal choice of English Breakfast with a few extra choices of local Kippers, Porridge etc. All locally sourced and you could tell. The restaurant itself is fairly small which made it more cosy than crowded and there was plenty of space between tables to make it very comfortable. Bar area was a good size, plenty of window seating to look out to see the stunning views of Yorkshire.

The Blacksmiths is situated about 5/10 mins out of Pickering. Its in a lovely location, far enough to offer peace and quiet but near enough to be able to explore North Yorkshire and everything it has to offer.

Mobile phones might as well be turned off as there was no signal which was more of a blessing to us than a hassle but a short drive will sort that out if you need to.

Will be coming back, hopefully in autumn.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms offer gardens and i would recommend them to anyone.

Just got back from a lovely weekend staying at the blacksmiths. We stayed for 2nights and ate at the hotel restaurant both nights. Food and atmosphere were excellent! Well positioned, surrounded by exceptional views but with many visitor spots an easy drive away; Pickering and Helmsley nearby and the east coast and York all a short drive away, ideal for day trips. The staff at blacksmiths were all very friendly and helpful. We stayed in a room on the first floor which was very clean but the decor was in need of a little updating. We would stay here again although next time we will pay a little extra for the rooms on the ground floor which look to be more modern and with French doors out to the gardens. Bunny rabbits can be seen grazing in the grounds, very cute!

We stayed recently as part of a group and were made to feel very welcome. The staff were helpful. The room was pleasant and the bed comfortable (shower temperamental- but can live with that!). Everywhere was spotlessly clean. Great breakfasts. This is a very good base for exploring the moors and coast. We would stay here again if we were in the area.
