“This Excellent Hotel in Hartlepool”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 February 2012

As a company we have been in the Douglas for 3 months taking around 3 to 4 rooms each week. The food is second to none and the portions very generous, The owner Lee is a wonderful chap and nothing is too much trouble. Even if you aren't staying in the hotel his restaurant is worth a visit on its own. Our guys will be sorry to leave they are getting looked after so well. We have certainly logged it as one of the places to stay if in the area.

Room Tip: This hotel has just been refurbished so nothing to complain about

We stayed four nights at the Douglas, and whilst the owners are extremely friendly and helpful, they're selling - so it will have new owners in the next couple of weeks. At present it caters mainly for contractors, but the rooms are big, airy and fresh, and reasonably well maintained. That said, the doubles are at the front so suffer from the traffic noise (which makes having the windows open impossible if you want to sleep. Breakfast wasn't bad, but if you like a lie-in you will probably miss it.
Hartlepool doesn't think it has anything going for it, but the people are warm and friendly, the road network is good, and it makes a good base. However, decent affordable eating places are not so numerous (unless you count the chain McDs/Pizza Hut/KFCs) but there are a couple of nice pubs (we liked The Jacksons Arms especially) and the ubiquitous Wetherspoons (we found 3). It also has a pretty good shopping centre, and links with Newcastle via rail are good and cheap. Not far away there's the RSPB reserve of Salthome and some good walking to be had.

Stayed one night as I was watching the Hartlepool v Southampton game. I had a Single Ensuite Room for £35.00 inc Breakfast. Room 18 is slighly small but has a comfortable single bed and a very clean and tidy Shower / W.C. Breakfast was excellent - I had the full english plus plenty of toast, coffee and juice. Staff very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. One small point - if you want to check in nearer 15:00 ring the hotel in advance to arrange - I had difficulty getting in at that time as no one was about.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 June 2009

I found the staff at this hotel friendly, welcoming and obliging. They didn't hesitate to get me a meal not long before their restaurant was due to close in the evening and a staff member offered to help me with my bag. The food was excellent.
The room was clean and comfortable but quite small, hence perhaps not so great for longer stays. The downside is that the hotel is situated on a fairly busy intersection so there is quite a bit of traffic noise until very late in the evening.
I would certainly stay there again if on a short visit.
