“Eaten but not stayed”

We were introduced to this gem of a pub very recently by friends, our first meal was the midweek early bird special and we weren't disappointed. The food was delicious and would recommend the sausage and mash starter (yes a starter), venison and the apple toffee betty. The board changes all the time so there is always something a little bit different. Then we come to Sunday lunch, which is by far one of the best in the area, Peter is very proud of his mashed potato and mushy peas and rightly so as they are delicious. There is a choice of 4 meats, all cooked to perfection and I would highly recommend the lamb, all the meat is home cooked and the portions are more than generous with lovelt thick slices, lots of veg and lashings of gravy. Peter is very welcoming and takes pride in his range of real ales. Highly recommneded !!!

Room Tip: Did not stay but the courtyard rooms look lovely

We arrived at just after 9pm and we were greeted warmly by the owner and he offered to make us some food from the bar menu even though they had stopped serving which was much appreciated. The bar and food prices were very reasonable.
The owner showed us to our room and went through how everything worked which was a nice touch. The room was large and great for what we wanted. There was an umbrella in the room which was a nice touch and needed!
We were asked to pre order breakfast which was fine and was lovely the next morning. One down side was the owners continuously talking to us the entire time we were trying to eat, this was really off putting and made us rush everything to get away. I am sure some people would like this but it wasn't something we were comfortable with.
The first morning the shower ran out of hot water while I was still getting shampoo out of my hair and meant that the other half had to have a cold shower, this was probably as quite of a few of the rooms were leaving at the same time, later and the following morning there didn't seem to be a problem.
We would consider staying here again in the future, it was nice to go somewhere different to the usual chain hotel. The view from the rooms is fabulous.

Rooms are top notch and of a high standard both in decor and cleanliness. Owners and staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Warm friendly atmosphere in the pub. Bit disappointed that we ordered fish, chips and mushy peas but were told no mushy peas available when meal arrived. Lovely breakfast though. Would return

we went tonight for the first time after hearing several good reviews but also cries of "oooh a bit pricey" a look on this website showed a mixture of good and bad reviews so we were unsure what to expect. We got what we expected and more.... traditional English village pub and traditional décor ,,,, we were worried about how much this was going to cost and again we were surprised, it was average for any restaurant serving the same quality food. we both had the black pudding and haggis starter (beautiful but a meal in its self!!!!) and then my husband had the duck, well cooked and just the right amount of pink, whilst I had the lamb fillet...again beautiful ,,a huge portion ( began to wish I had not had the starter!!) we had a bottle of house wine and the bill was just over £50 very reasonable for the quality and size of the meal. The patron sheela came out to speak to us and was very friendly and we had a lovely hat to end a lovely evening and the waitress who served us was a delight. we were even advised of "cheaper nights" and special offers. As we do not consider a two course A LA CARTE meal for two and a bottle of wine for £50 to be excessive we will be back again x

After spending over 100 pound on a meal you at least exspect it to be cooked. I have never had duck before were the blood is running out of it PINK yes blood dripping from it no but once I informed sheiler the owner all so the so called wonderful chef she got very agressive and stud and argued "it had to be cooked because she has cooked 3 duck tonight and the other to were fine so mine had to be to " after saying this she stormded back in to the kitchen were her and her husbond carried on shouting about the holl event. As if this was not bad another when the bill arrived they had charged us for the meal that I did not eat. To sum the evening up we were embarrass , hungry and payed over 100 pound for the pleasure. We shall never be eating there again.

Decided last minute to have a weekend away with my husband as we were both off work. It was a bank holiday and this proved to be difficult as everywhere seemed to be booked up. We eventually came across the Ship Inn, we decided to book the larger room namely Crows Nest Cottage and glad we did. It is a beautiful and well designed property which has been tastefully furnished. The pub itself is warm and friendly with a huge choice of drinks but the star of the show for me was the restaurant. The food from start to finish was delightful, freshly prepared, tasteful and served up beautifully. The hosts are Peter and Sheila who are lovely people and very helpful and knowledgeable. As it was a bank holiday our stay involved a Sunday night, as we were out for the whole day we were disappointed that food was only served Sunday afternoon and that the bar closed at 8pm, we would have loved to have eaten there again and as its a little isolated we ended up back in Durham for our last evening meal. Had we asked I'm sure Sheila would have got us something to eat but we wanted the full dining experience and wasn't disappointed with our choice Overall this was a lovely weekend even though the weather was against us and the couple we spoke to at breakfast gave us the fantastic idea to visit Beamish living museum.. Had a great time.

Room Tip: our first night was windy and the guttering must be loose at some point, rattled most of the night a...
